Emera beach = Luck
Therefore Rare Candies = Luck
Soothe Bell = PD
PD = Interacting & Selling
Therefore Soothe Bell = Not Luck
The thing with being popular is not a big deal in my opinion. Usually, if you interact a lot you get lots of interaction backs. I haven't seen anything contrary, I've interacted a ton and in the next day I wake up and I get like two hundred interactions.
The thing with more active people have a better advantage is perfectly fine, thats how its supposed to be.
People often think the PH sprites are bland. Do they shade? Well, yes they do. You'll be surprised how much care is taken for these sprites.
Edit: whoops, I forgot that Liirah also mention the other options to get rare candies >.< I was in a hurry to get some so I was mostly looking in the GTS to buy them.
Therefore Rare Candies = Not Luck
With both the scavenger hunt and the bug hatching contest going, there was a good chance to snatch a few candies from Emera Square as well.
And even if there is an element of luck in what the golden slot spits out at you and whatever fish chomps down your bait, just keep interacting and fishing for another try. Time and effort yields rewards.
As for the candies being overpriced, that's just supply and demand. People were most likely offering prices way over the usual asking price during the event even without the sellers overpricing them.
Rich users can deal with the heavy price, and thats the point. There should be no line to seperate the poor users and the rich users. If a poor users hardwork can easily be destroyed by a user who happens to have millions of PD because of shiny hunting or selling art - thats an unfair event. We need more events like the easter egg hunt, and halloween, events where they're unique without giving all the rich users the good stuff. Scavenger egg hunt is a nice event and all, but there should be no reason why people felt discouraged enough to just not even try at all. It's "to get a better time," but many users just tried once and that was it. Only 620 users participated.
Also, here are the sprites:
Normal:
Shiny:

When it comes to rich people buying their way through an event, so what? They put time and effort into acquiring their wealth (whether it's from pouring time and PD/gems/whatever into shiny hunting, years of work at practicing drawing, or by other means) and they should be able to use that wealth however they please. They didn't just get rich by snapping their fingers, they earned it.
Not to mention, I don't even think this event was highly geared towards rich users. The only argument towards that is that they could buy a lot of rare candies from other users. But, like said, there was plenty of ways for everyone to gather candies and plenty of time to do it as well.
Yes, it's a shame less people participated than how many event eggs there were. But I think some people probably just had their sights too fixed on the top prizes alone and gave up without even trying because of perceived "unfairness." They failed to see they could get the event egg basically without the competition aspect and defeated themselves.
