"I can't remember the last time I saw a night sky not clouded with smoke and fire".
That was the last thing I heard my friend, Setanta, say before he died in his sleep. Like most, he didn't have control of how he died. But unlike most, he died peacefully. Not in excruciating pain. Not pleading for his life. He just went to sleep that night and never woke up. To this day, I dont know what to think of his death. Should I curse the world for taking the person who had been like a father to me for many years, or do I get on my knees and thank it for letting him go in a way many dream they could go. One thing is for sure though, thats not how I will leave this world. I will leave it like hundreds of thousands do every day, on the battlefield-

*A sound of a horn filled the air and Maya jumped in fear and looked back towards her door. She then let out a sigh of relief as she soom realized it was just the horn for the soldiers to wake up. She turned backwards towards her diary and dabbed the quill into the ink with her left hand continued writing what would be her last entry.*

Fighting to live just a little bit longer then you would otherwise

*Maya put the quill down and blew at the page to dry the ink before closing it and putting it in a small metal box and locking the book in. She got out of her chair with the box and slowly lifed a floorboard up to hide the book. Once it was in, she lowered the floorboard and stood up. Her shift to patrol was going to start any minute*

Kendo was slumped over the counter, a empty glass of liquor in one hand, his sword in the other. He's out cold. A burnt-out cigarette lay on the table next to him. He doesn't seem to be much bothered by the fact that he's supposed to be patrolling. A note on the counter next to him read: "Out for booze. Don't send me out to patrol we're dead anyways."

His eyes flutter open. He glances around, stumbling around. He put a figer to his temple, trying to ease the headache. Clearly this guy is hungover. He glances outside. The sun is rising.

"Patrol time. Great."

Sage stands at the northeast tower, looking on to the plains below. They pluck at the string of their longbow, yawning in the early morning light. Times of peace such as this are why they keep fighting. Bits of bliss in the eye of the storm. They were tired of the death, the pain, the suffering. They were willing to do anything to make things better, and so here they were, crack of dawn, patrolling the perimeter. She looks up as she hears footsteps approaching. Another guard on patrol, Reyna, made her way Sages direction, weapon ready at a moments notice. "Took you long enough," Sage laughs. "Couldn't have gotten up a little earlier? I've been by myself here for the last hour."

Kaori looked up from polishing her sword when she heard the horn. The obnoxiously loud horn that could wake the dead. The horn was supposed to be loud, supposed to wake sleepy and tired soldiers to patrol. But maybe they could tone it down just a notch? After all, those who were already awake had probably lost about a third of their hearing from the horn. But oh well.

Sighing as she stood up, she lifted her sword to the rising sun's light. The sword was dark purple, shiny, showed signs that it was just recently polished. As she turned it in the light, she looked back over at the incoming troops, reporting for patrol. She might as well join them, as she was actually supposed to report for patrol too.

She jumped down from the balcony she was standing on and landed on a soft cushion she kept there at all times. It was a rather convenient that she always jumped down from the same balcony, from doing the same thing, during the same time. Always the balcony on Second Street, from polishing her sword, and always at sunrise. Rather convenient, eh?

As she ran over to the group that was reporting for patrol, she kept an eye on her surroundings. Ever since the war started, she was always cautious, even if everything was deemed safe, she would double and triple-check to make sure that it was completely safe. Even in high-security places. Even at home. She used to be very open-minded and trustful. Before the war. Now that the war started, she was more fixed-minded and distrustful. In fact, so distrustful that she actually hasn't trusted anybody since the war began.

Ayran yawned, he just woke up and was late. Thus he quickly got dressed in his traditional robe and grabbed his scrimitars. As he was planning on going at a leisure pace today, but the plan was cut off as soon as he heard the loud horn.

Immediately alert, he finished polishing his scrimtars and head out, with a frown on his face. His scrimitars shined gold light with black linings with ivory and some other mysterious material imbedded inside. He swishes the scrimitar around his wrist a few times, before setting out to see the comotion.

*As Maya lowered the floorboard, she looked around her bungalo and noticed Ayran, Kaori, and Kendo had seemingly left without her. She slowly stood up and went towards her bed, where she saw the tail of her arrows poking and prodding out of the top. She lightly grazed one arrow with her pointer finger before grabbing the strap of the holster and putting it over her shoulder. As she finished getting ready, she began walking toward the door before placing her hand on its handle but not turning it. She subtly looked over her shoulder to see her bow still by her bed. Maya turned and slowly walked towards it, lifting it up as she finally reached it. She plucked the string with her left pointer finger before pinching it with her hand and raising it. She slowly drew the string back as she tested its strength before closing her right eye as if she was about to fire. But after a few seconds, she slowly lowered the bow and string before walking outside to go to her post*

What was once cold harsh winds that blew across the restless night and cut through even the thickest of cloths slowly turned into a gentler dawn breeze that gently caressed frozen fingers. Elliot let out a huff, white clouds of his own breath floating around the warming skies. Even bundled in dark fabrics, it was hard to feel his limbs after spending the night on shift. He couldn't wait to go back into his bunk and just conk out without a care in the world, wrapped in sheets that though weren't the thickest did still provide comfort and warmth. It always felt lonely to go to sleep in a twin bed with no one beside him in either event, too used to sharing a bed with his husband and army of adopted cats, but recently he had been taking more and more night shifts.

As morning heralded the end of Elliot's shift, a blessed time that was very rudely interrupted by a blaring horn that only made every guard who was set to be to sleep groan in relief. The others were waking up so soon enough, the rotation time nigh upon them.

Cosima blinked awake, annoyed by the horn. It was definitely one way to wake everyone up, but it also kinda gave away the camp's location. Was she the only one who saw a problem with that? Her hand reached for her daggers almost immediately, only to pause and change course to wipe the sleep from her eyes. She wasn't sure how long she had been here so far, but she still didn't bother to converse with anyone more than needed. Why bother? Not that she had any good social skills anyways...

Feet silent against the floor, she hastily changed before checking the sharpness of her daggers and arrows. Satisfied, she slung the arrow sheath over her shoulder and tucked her daggers into her belt before grabbing her bow. She paused before opening the door, then shook her head and stepped out, scanning for others nearby.

*Maya walked to the balcony and looked down towards the street. Hundreds of soldiers and civilians lined it, walking each and every direction. However, she saw Ayran and Kaori walking below and ehistled towards them, causing them to stop and look back. Maya thrust her leg onto the balcony and jumped off, landing with a thud onto the ground and rolling as to not injure herself aside from the shock in her legs. She ran tiwards them and wrapped her arms around them and started ribbing them* You jerks! How dare you not let me know you were leaving yet!

Kendo glared at the sun, like it had committed some grave crime. He sighed and went back to his seat at the counter. The bar was deserted. He was the only one there, drinking his pain away. The bartender had long since closed shop, but he let Kendo stay. He groaned.

"God damn it... I was hoping I'd drop dead from alcohol poisoning..."

Kaori immediately stepped back away from Maya. She was a definite 'no-no' with physical contact and despised them greatly. She walked about two steps away from Maya, with a blank look on her face. Crossing her arms over her chest, she looked at Maya with the same blank look. "Last time I remembered, we were all trained to leave when we heard the horn, no matter what." she said flatly as she gave a quick security check on their surroundings, making sure that they weren't being followed.

When she was satisfied with the security levels of their location, she turned back to Maya, and said, "Besides, we probably would've waited if we knew where you were" flatly, again. Kaori was that one person who rarely had emotion in her voice, that one person whom everybody presumed as teenagers would say, 'emo' based on her blank face, flat voice, and dark clothes. But she had her reasons.

If she had a voice with so much emotion in it, it would always give away a hiding spot, especially if her life depended on it. Having a smiling face just looked painful, and dark clothes were good for sabotages. But Kaori really didn't care, as she only had a small list of priorities.

Reyna nodded at Sage but said nothing, the patrol shift was as broing as ever and other people had started to wake. She glanced around and made sure it was absolutely clear of any sus activity. The sun was rising rapidly it the horizon and Reyn was already tired of standing and waiting as if she had a purpose. Reyna sat down and examined her quiver, she didnt have anything better to do anyways, then she turned to Sage. "It's interesting isn't it, how so many people's lives can be ruined just by the actions of one person." She said with some sort of anger in her voice, how many children and elderly had been killed, people who could've lived a great and happy life, people who could have risen to power or changed the world, had died just because one person dislike the actions of the country.

Sage chuckles awkwardly. "Woke up on the wrong side of the bed today, eh?" Sage leans against the wall, looking down. Of course, Reyna was right. It was true, of course, that all of this was crazy. "It wasn't just one person. Those that followed behind them filled the powder keg." Sage snap their fingers. "They just lit the fuse, and were left to put out the fire." The sun reaches higher, basking their skin in a warmth they hadn't felt in a while. Maybe it will all be okay. Maybe the fighting would stop and peace would reign at last. Of course, Sage knew that wouldnt happen, that realistically, most of them wouldnt make it out alive. "If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? Assuming no conflict would arise."

Reyna shrugged, “Don’t know, Turkey maybe, it’s just because they have kind of cats everywhere.” Reyna looked at the sun and then to Sage “What about you?” Reyna wasn’t actually sure if she would like to go to Turkey, but It was one country with a lotta cats, and she like cats and dog. Reyna leaned again the wall and sighed, she tried to imagine her life without any war.

"I used to have a cat," Sage says with a half smile. "Her name was Cleopatra." The thought of their old pet scratching at walls, knocking over cups. It was irritating at the time, but now, they would do anything to have that sense of normalcy back. However, times have changed, and Sage has learned to stop reminiscing. Things happen, people die, and Sage would have to change with it all. "I'd say Sweden. I'd go to the middle of nowhere, set up living, and just soak in the rural environments. I hear it's beautiful this type of year."

He buried his head in his hands, slumped over on the counter. He looked at the empty glass next to him.

"Why... why are we here, like this..."

He wanted to go back to sleep. To ignore everything, but the sun was shining into his eyes. How annoying.

Ayran was just walking with Kaori, before a huge weight sank on his shoulders. He turned his head, and just as he had thought, it was Maya.

He smiled helplessly, "Miss Maya... it's your fault that you were late y'know.."

Ayran has a well-made, neat schedule, so he was never late to anything and was always on time, almost like a model student, he was well liked within the guards as well, since he could be a sharp close-combat fighter, with sharp instinct, and a hawk-eyed archer with perfect accuracy.

Ayran shrug off Maya's shoulders, "Now let's get going shall we?"

"After all, the horn calls."

The horn did call everyone, not only did it wake everyone up, but it also made a sense of emergence among ordinary people. But Ayran wasn't ordinary, so he wasn't worried, and had a smile on his face like always, looking as if everything was alright and there was nothing going on. But, because of that, it also created a sense of safety for people, when it was his turn to guard, because they knew, with Ayran's skills, they will be safe..

Unless something unexpected happened.

This grown man was wallowing in in his own misery. He was not always like this. He was usually an upbeat, cheerful man around other people. Alone, however? He's miserable. He's terrified for his life, but he lets no one know. He groaned, at the thought of patrol.

"Oh god, they're coming, aren't they..."

He groaned.

"Last time they woke me up with a freezing glass of water, please... goddess spare me I don't want to deal with them..."

He laughed quietly to himself, the sound ringing out in the empty, desolate bar.

"Eheh..."

"Thats a pretty nice name... and Sweden, ive never gone there before, thought is 'Swedish Fish' good?" Reyna asked with a smile. Then she heard some talking coming louder and louder, probably the others heading... somewhere, the horn had been blown, so that's probably the case.

Cosima could see the patrol group huddling together, and she slowly made her way towards them. She wasn't sure if they had seen her yet, and didn't want to sneak up on anyone, so she waited a little off to the side.
