A bullet whizzed past them, forcing them back to the cruel reality.
Deep breath in, deep breath out.
Blink.
Repeat.
One breath was all it took for the career - the killer to reorient herself. To settle her nerves, calm amongst a flood of chaos and raw emotion. Things had fallen to bedlam, with both sides shooting wildly at one another. The only semblance of order, cruel as it was, came from the Peacekeepers. Where did such a large army come from? Had Snow finally gotten impatient, tired of waiting, and decided to take things into his own hands? It seemed so unlike him, Adelaide mused, as she pulled a loaded gun from her back. The rifle could fire much much faster than a normal handgun. She silently bid Gateguard safety, letting the cold wrath of her mind sweep over her like a cloak. Her eyes lost emotion, each movement fluid as a dancer. Bullets poured from her gun, dropping the soldiers dead like flies. The crack of the gun and the recoil numbed her limbs and shot through her brain like thunder.
She jerked back to Nova, her brow furrowing when the Mockingjay suggested they leave for the Capital. With what means, exactly? They couldn't just convince the Peacekeepers to take them alive since they'd likely arrive at the Capital ridden with bullets and very very dead. Steal a hovercraft? Nova was constantly flight-sick and Adelaide doubted she could fly one without crashing. "Leave for the — oh, yes that seems possible." The career fired off a few shots, mopping her brow and fighting to keep her sarcasm from becoming hurtful. "How, exactly, do we go to Snow? Walk to the Capital? Surrender to the Peacekeepers and hope they don't kill us outright?" Snarling, Adelaide checked both sides to make sure her coast was clear.
This had to work. If not, then both girls risked the loss of everything they loved.
"You mean, that we're doing this on a whim with no plan? I don't know if you know this, but the Capital is a minefield of sadistic death traps." Oh brother. Adelaide reloaded her gun, swinging it over her shoulder as she checked both sides for threats. The dense woodland glowed with fey beauty, one of its only perks. The Capital was a death trap through and through. She kept throwing glances behind her as the echoing screeches and roars of battle gradually faded. She didn't exactly know why she was being this paranoid; maybe it was her nerves getting to her. Color this mission impossible. So why was she still walking? "I'm just going to assume somebody knows about this."
Because this was reckless and heady and devastatingly enticing. Because this was, at heart, who Adelaide was; an arduous brute and a scoundrel. And a true defier of the odds, which had never been in her favor. A shot at Snow himself, who would've thought. She'd never gambled, but this was a Hail Mary if she'd ever seen one. She had been trained to be feral and wild, to never back down from a fight.
"We can't just sneak in." in Adelaide's head, a plan unfolded. Risky, but playing into a role she knew how to consummately act. "But we can walk in. I got an idea; pretend, an illusion. Peacekeeper and prisoner, between me and you respectively. I should just be able to bring us both to Snow before anyone suspects anything."
"The peacekeepers come from my district, primarily. We're trained to be soldiers from the moment we can walk." Adelaide huffed with a mirthless laugh. "I know how to act like one; it's why tributes from Two are so brutish. Gonna need you to play the part, though, and you might hate me." The last part was bitter, and it left a foul taste in her mouth. She had not really explored that one dangerous, dark part of her. As long as she did not meet trouble, it would remain that way. If she did have to become the monster that had been created, the consequences could become horrific.
"There are parts of me I'd rather not explore."
"Play along." Adelaide responded quietly, "And make sure we don't get lost." It was getting a bit difficult to work around the big wad of anxiety, fear and trepidation that was currently enveloping her heart in a cold fist.
Adelaide sneered silently to herself as she laid eyes upon the beatific glamour of the Capital. So much wealth and jewels, pulled from the coffers of each of their districts at a beguiling rate. The sable-granite stone glowed boldly in dawn's early light, and the eccentric citizens of the Capital were already milling about, presumably unaware of the destruction that she and Nova had just escaped. "Alright," Adelaide scanned the scene with narrowed eyes, "Where, can I get a suit of armor?"
Agent Fallows, signing out~
Adelaide kept an eye on the road, marching with a precise military march toward what she presumed to be the main palace. The lavish Capital citizens bustled past her, completely oblivous to the fact that the enemy had just plainly walked into their midst. Adelaide willed her face clean of any emotion, keeping it cold, strict and unforgiving. She lowered her voice to answer Nova's question, and when she spoke, her voice had dropped into an icy, menacing timbre. "Keep it down." Adelaide snarled icily, tightening her grip on Nova's arm instinctively, "Prisoners aren't always cuffed, from what I hear. Speak again, and it's a blow to the face." Formal words, formal titles.
