The students were escorted into the Great hall in alphabetical order.

Professor Flitwick stood on top of a small dais, and welcomed the students.

The Sorting Hat sang a song, if you could call it a song. It seemed that someone Peeves had taught the hat how to beatbox over the summer. Its improv was sub-par at best, but the students gave the hat a standing ovation nonetheless. The strained smiles struggled to remain on the faces of the staff at the High Table.

And then the sorting began. Professor Flitwick read names from his scroll. The ones we care about are as follows:
"Cloud, Viper! Slytherin!
Elysandre, Catherine! Ravenclaw! wrong story. get it together idiot!
Fletcher, Dylan! Slytherin!
Gushiken, Natsuki! Gryffindor!
Kim, Areum! Ravenclaw!
Knight, Hollow! Ravenclaw!
Kuroyanagi, Yuri! Ravenclaw!
Lediana, Athena! Gryffindor!
Nightshade, Camila! Slytherin!
Partridge, Emerson! Ravenclaw!
Qimit, Rubert! Slytherin!
Quixly, Elliana! Hufflepuff!
Sanchez, Neo-Flynn! Gryffindor!
Taylor Wright, Jaylee! Ravenclaw!
Wiggums, Charlie! Slytherin!
Wimgly, Noah! Hufflepuff!"

The Great Hall cheered as food magically appeared before them.

Athena smiled with relief as the sorting hat was lifted off her head. It had seriously considered putting her in Ravenclaw, but by her preference she got in Griffyndor instead. She didn’t really know why, she wasn’t really brave, or at least so she thought. She went to sit at the Griffyndor table.

Elliana was over-joyed that she was a Hufflepuff; she always loved badgers. She walked over to the Hufflepuff table.

Noah hoped making new friends in Hufflepuff as he sat down to eat.

Yuri sat at the Ravenclaw table, with this weird.... thing. "H-hello... I'm Yuri!" She introduced herself, and the thing, which was apparently called Hollow Knight, just nodded.

Natsuki sat down at the Gryffindor table, and said, "I'm Natsuki, and I like cats!" She got some unapproving stares, but it made sense for an 11-year-old girl to like them.

Areum also sat down at the Ravenclaw table and sat quietly in the corner. But after a split decision, she walked over to Yuri and said a nice and simple "Hello!" and went back to sit in her corner.

Kendo took a seat next to Athena, feeling pretty good.

“Hi Kendo, you’re in Griffyndor too?” Athena felt a lot better about the year ahead now that she had at least one friend in her house.

This was going to prove an interesting year.

Dylan walked over to the slytherin table plopping down next to whoever was closest, she took out her book and started scribbling furiously, Dylan had piled some food onto her plate and looked up every now and then to take a bite in between her pencil scratching the paper.

kendo was chatting with other griffindors as he ate.

Areum pulled out a book and started reading, completely ignoring the meal going on around her. She was completely immersed, not noticing what was happening around her. Then when the food had magically appeared, she then only put away her book and groped around until she felt a small sandwich and nibbled on it, bringing her book back up to her face.

Camila sat with the other Slytherins, not really talking with them. Just eating, listening in to conversations, ect.

There was a clinking of a spoon on a goblet. The headmistress had risen to give her typical beginning of term speech. Before she started talking, a portrait of Albus Dumbledore appeared on the podium, with a flash.

Ahem," said portrait Dumbledore from the podium, stroking his long silver beard. "Just a few more words now that we are all fed and watered. I have a few start-of-term notices to give you."

Professor McGonagall looked somewhere between amused and annoyed. Defense Professor Magnolia stared at the new development with interest. Professor Flitwick sighed, and put his head in his hands. Dumbledore kept speaking.

"First years should note that the forest on the grounds is forbidden to all pupils. That is why it is called the Forbidden Forest. If it were permitted it would be called the Permitted Forest."

Straightforward. Note to self: Forbidden Forest is forbidden.

"I have also been asked by Mr. Filch, the caretaker, to remind you all that no magic should be used between classes in the corridors. Alas, we all know that what should be, and what is, are two different things. Thank you for keeping this in mind."

"Albus, what is the meaning of this?" The clipped Scottish accent of the Headmistress carried across the hall. The students began to laugh. Some could hear a spectral giggle...

The portrait ignored the Headmistress, and continued to speak. "Quidditch trials will be held in the second week of the term. Anyone second year or higher interested in playing for their house teams should contact Madam Hooch- Whoa, whoa!"

With a flick of her wand, Professor McGonagall enchanted the portrait to fly out the Oaken doors of the Great Hall. The doors slammed behind it. The Hall was silent.

A second flick of her wand sent Peeves, who had been hiding behind a tapestry, flung out the window.

"He's becoming more intelligent," Professor Davies muttered to Professor Magnolia.

"Yes, I noticed that as well. It's only a matter of time before he begins to bargain with the students. I look forward to what they will create together..."

"Well I for one, do not." Professor Abernathy rolled his eyes at his companions. The Herbology teacher believed in order, and Peeves particularly liked to destroy his order.

"A special announcement to all students this year," The Headmistress began again. She had the attention of everyone in the hall. "There will be a new challenge this year to all students; competition by grade level. It is an inter-house team event. More will be discussed of this as the weeks go on, but do not be surprised to see some... changes throughout the castle. You are dismissed. Follow your prefects back to your dormitories."

The students rose with a clatter of plates. Prefects called their first years towards them, and they filed chaotically out of the Great Hall.

When the Hall was finally empty, the Headmistress turned to her colleagues. "This is not the first omen... things are changing this year, and I don't meet the competition. Keep an eye on the students, especially the first years. It's almost as if the castle itself is preparing for something bigger."

Areum noticed that everybody was getting up, so she got up, too. "First years! First years! Over here!" these two kids called. She went over, curiously, and put her book down. '이것은 내가 생각했던 것과 많이 다르다 (This is much different than I thought' she thought as she walked slowly over to them. Her brain processed through what A. Dumbledore said 'Quidditch? What's that?' she wondered. 'And the competition. Maybe that'll be fun?' she wondered (again!)

Athena stood up and walked towards the prefects. Sleep was going to be hard today, she couldn't wait for classes to start! She was going to learn so much, and study hard, and... Taking a deep breath, she pushed those thoughts away. She mustn't get ahead of herself. But the best part of this year was going to be having a friend. It was going to be amazing! Or so she hoped. There was always a chance... No, those thoughts weren't welcome either. She was going to make this year work.
