What has been going on with roleplaying?
Forum-Index → General Discussion → What has been going on with roleplaying? So the more experienced RPers, like myself, get sick of even attempting to hold a RP more literate than one-liners and even give up on finding a RP on here all together.
I have had a few decent RPers show up, but they are far and few in between and it's really not worth my effort to go and find them.
Edit: There is never a reason for a 1-line post. You can ALWAYS expand on your post.
Instead of "______ walked around." the post could be "_________ walked around to see what s/he could find. Upon finding nothing, s/he returned back to __________ to see what they were up to."
Notice that the post is now two "lines" or sentences instead of one. You can give what the character is feeling, or looking at, or if there is speech, you can have them interact while speaking. (I have never met someone who just stands still while they talk. There's hand movements, swaying the body a little from foot to foot, walking around, sitting and slouching, possible tapping a surface, etc. There's also facial expressions such as a scowl when irritated or a smug smirk when trying to brag, things like that.)
If you expand on your post, you will find that it's not hard to write a paragraph, or at least two sentences. And if the other person writes more than one sentence, then that gives you more information to work with. I mean, RPs are building a WORLD, not just fixated on the character that you control.
And not trying to be rude, but Gijinkas and Highschool RPs are the ones with most one-liners. Mostly because they're the most common and people seem to want to be animu characters.
1. While RPs with little to no actual plots and one-liners are anything but my cup of tea, it's no crime for others to enjoy them. I know it can be frustrating when you can't find RPs that suit your tastes and "skill level" (which can be highly subjective), but it's no reason to deny others their fun. RPs that break the site rules obviously should be executed but I don't see why we shouldn't let the kids have fun with their one-liners even if you personally wouldn't touch the RPs in question with a 10 foot pole.
2. This is a site about pokemon, not roleplaying. Pokemon obviously attracts younger people who don't know how to RP "properly" (again, very subjective, people could argue about this quite a bit). If the RPs here don't suit your tastes, there are websites out there that are purely made for roleplaying. They're just a quick google search away. This is what I did and I found what I was looking for.
3. Don't be an elitist jerk. I'm guilty of having looked down on the RP section here but it's not my place to judge kids that are newbies to the hobby and just want to have fun. Shaming these one-liner/whatever RPers is not okay (not saying this is the purpose of the thread). It's perfectly acceptable to "teach" willing subjects the ways of the RP but don't spite the ones who like their own way of RPing better. Except when one-liner no-plot kids think they're the best the RPing world has to offer, these kids need a reality check. (That may or may not have sounded hypocritical.)
And that's my two cents on this. I probably forgot to mention something and I may have worded things poorly. You're free to ask things if you didn't get what I meant.
You're free to disagree with what I said and I'm open to changing my opinion.
First off we are not complaining about ANYTHING about Pokeheroes! The first thing you have said is completely what is true, but it all relies on the Rp creator's rule everybody gotta respect that! And Why do you call people SUBJECTS THAT RUDE! And you forum sounds like it's judge this Dicussion.
And, if someone doesn´t like what they are reading there, those people simply should stay away from reading one-line RPs.
Have we stated that they shouldn't rp like that? I don't think so.
The key thing is that, due to the flood of one-liner only RPs, and the not-thought-out RPs, those of us who are more literate find it hard to find a fair RP. It's hard to find a good partner.
Just because there is no excuse for a one-liner, well, almost none, doesn't mean that it's wrong. Just VERY disheartening.
As my post said, more experienced RPers and more literate RPers have kind of given up on the RP forums because the "good" rps are drowned out by the one-line spam nonsense. And, yes, some of these RPs break the rules (Mainly the POST IN THE RIGHT FORUM rule, since RPs themselves should not be in the sign-ups forum, as it makes it that much harder to find an actual RP setup...)
And the "Just find another site to RP on" approach is absolute BS. I'm sorry, but it is something I have tried, time and time again. But most RP sites that I find either want you to type the exact same way as everyone else, or isn't active. And my typing style isn't going to be strictly within a "4-5 sentences per paragraphs and two paragraphs per post. No shorter, no longer, and any character that isn't flawed more than non- shouldn't apply. And too flawed or with actual baggage is too dramatic and shouldn't apply." kind of site.
Toyhou.se implies it's supposed to be good for finding RPs, but most of the people on there are looking for more "adult" rps or are so strict in what they are searching for that anyone else is just SOL.
"Don't let someone else make you feel guilty or ashamed about something you don't have control over, whether it is your skin color, your sexual preference or otherwise."

When I was new to roleplaying, I'm not exactly literate nor am I good to english, in general, and that was literally 3 years ago. But now, thanks to dedication I'm a- well, a bit good, there's always room for improvements.
So from a simple post like this (copy-pasted in its purest form, no edits. it was from 2 years ago)
I cringed at Burger King
I improved now, I guess, but hey, that's the thing; learn and improve, don't stick to something or to one style, experiment a little bit and you might like it. Don't judge but not let others learns, judge and give advice om how they can improve, or let them learn from what you post, try to set up a good example and help them.
Back to topic.
The thing is that one liners breaks the rp- or atleast semi-literate or literate rps. If someone were to type this;
I'm so sorry
You don't actually have anything to write about. Of course, some rpers are creative and will try to expand their post, putting in as much details as possible.

Jack set down his bag on the stone
bench, taking off his denim jacket as he prepares to jog. Jack is
in the soccer team, so he had to work on his poor excuse of a
stamina or he might aswell sit on the bench for the whole game and
be a decoration. He likes to take a walk(run? stroll?) around the
park anyway.
Jack had only jogged around the park for thirty seconds, but you can hear his heavy breathing between each steps. While he is a good athlete at almost everything, his stamina never matches his skills. He can sprint, but that's it. He can throw some hard punches, but it won't take long til he worn out of it. Speed, skill and stamina all matters, but Jack clearly lacked stamina, being spoiled ever since he was a child and only got to sports activity this year.
Taking deep breaths as he endured the pain in his leg, he caught the sight of a familar face, a face belonging to a childhood friend of his. He jogged over to Mary with what little energy he had left. "Hey. Wasn't expecting to see you here." The brunette male says in a cheerful voice, glad to see a familiar face at the park in the morning. Jack doesn't have any sort of friendly acquaintance, so those that he can call friends are very close to him and means a lot to him.

If you can think of 4 sentences to reply to that one line (not counting looking around and writing about something else), you are amazing.
When a literate/semi-literate rp is joined by a one liner or vice versa, it can be rather tiring, really, or make someone uncomfortable. So literate rpers usually try to make at least 2 sentences so the inexperienced rper could try to reply to that, but still learn.
The rps here are also getting bland- something you can't really have fun with when you're literate. Unless of course you like the concept and can think of ideas for your post. Bland rps with simple plot aren't interesting for me, but I don't just those who does like it- I just won't join the simple ones or give a glance, since it isn't exactly my business (unless it's breaking the rules).
But really, rping is about having fun, learn as you do it and it's all fine. Always improve, always learn and never just stick to one thing, even if you are comfortable by it. (expect murdering people, don't murder people because it's new and seems fun.)
Complain
: to say or write that you are unhappy, sick, uncomfortable, etc., or that you do not like something
: to say (something that expresses annoyance or unhappiness)
Copy-paste definition of the word from a dictionary. If you ask me, sounds like complaining is exactly what's going on on this thread. I'm not saying that's a bad thing though. Complaining as a word just has bad connotations.
I'm not saying we can't even talk about this subject at all but threads like this can spread some mentality about "superior" RPers and whatnot and that can be harmful, especially with kids involved. Though I do realize hurt feelings are no reason to censor a whole discussion but people should just tread carefully. (Again, not saying people here have said anything totally bad that I'm judging but that's where I can see this thread potentially going.)
Calling people "subjects" was my way of trying to be slightly humorous and make my writing a bit more... variable. (Not quite sure if that's the word I should use.) I guess it's a part of my "writing style". I didn't mean it in an offending way in the least and I'm sorry if it came out that way.
I was just giving my opinion but if you want to call it judging instead, feel free to do so. I don't mind. (And I shall be a douchebag here and point out that it seems like you're judging my post as well so, eh. *Shrugs* :,D)
If I was an one-liner RPer and stumbled upon this discussion, I'd assume that's exactly what is being said. Perhaps that's just me though. (I'm not saying that's what's being said. I'm trying to point out people's perceptions matter. Or something. I'm not sure if I'm making sense. :,D) I can admit that my post probably came out like I had made hasty conclusions though, sorry about that.
No objections here. Finding an partner on your level is hard here, I admit that, but I'm mostly blaming that on the fact that this is a pokemon site. Of course someone could suggest that there should be another sub-forum for more "advanced" RPs but then we'd encounter yet another problem. I've seen some very different definitions for some "advanced" RPs and that sub-forum would be doomed to fail pretty quickly if you ask me.
As much as I love calling things BS, I have to disagree with you this time. Like said, PH is a pokemon site and the RP forum is just there in one small corner as an added fun. Of course it's not going to come even close to what sites made for RPing are. It would be foolish to expect or demand it. (Not saying you are.)
I don't know what RP sites you've checked out nor shall I try to defend them. My own experience with Iwaku has been rather pleasant and I haven't stumbled on those issues/unrealistic expectations you mentioned on that site. I don't know if that's one of the ones you've tried or not. (Yeah, it's invite only now. If someone wants to join, I can hand some invites out.)
And the following is more of an off-topic "by the way" -remark:

Literate: able to read and write.
That's the definition. So all RPers are literate. And this is why I find it kind of strange to label RPs as "literate" or "semi-literate". I get what people mean by them in the context of RPs but they still sound kind of off to me. Not to mention they have a more or less snobbish tone to them. Or maybe that's just me again. :d
I'm not saying people shouldn't use those words since they seem to be doing their job, it's just a teeny tiny thingy that I disagree with and I felt like pointing it out.
My apologies if this post came out hostile, that's not my intention.
"Literate: able to read and write."
The term literate when referring to RPs is not far different from the dictionary version.
If you don't write full sentences, use chat speak, and the end result is incoherent, then the term illiterate is very fitting. (Unable to write/type properly)
Semi-literate is able to write, but there are flaws to be expected, and it's not like reading a book every reply.
And literate is able to read and write a lot.
At least in the frame of context for a RP.
One-liners aren't marked as illiterate in my books. Just not appealing at all. However, chat style RPs are illiterate. Most of them don't use proper grammar, sentence structure, or even sentences at all.
Cat: *Crashes* Whoops.
Dog: CAT! *Chases excitedly*
Those are considered illiterate because there aren't any clear sentences or coherence to them. (Again, not wrong, just not my cup of tea, and would be considered illiterate)
I will be looking at the website that was linked, but I'm not going to hold high hopes for it. (Unfortunately I don't know what sites I was on before, since I was on like 50 of them to find a good RP, and they either kicked me out for my typing style, or they died off.)
Sometimes I feel sad for both sides, the ones that post one-liners, and the ones that post semi-lit. I think maybe to stop these two kinds of people from clashing in a roleplay, and even maybe stop the one-liners from getting into trouble with the admin of the roleplay for not writing enough, I think there should be three filters/sections of roleplays, a semi-lit section, moderate section, and newbie section.
Seeing as some people on this site don't have English as their mother language, it would be hard for them to write up a whole paragraph, if they are still in the process of learning English, hence maybe they should either go with the newbie section, or the moderate section, if they are still learning and need to get hang of the English language.
I'm pretty sure most of you get annoyed when you write up a paragraph like:
And then someone pops up after your post and posts something like this:
Not even joking, this happened to me before and believe me, I wasn't that pleased. In my mind, I was thinking to myself:
1. Where did they come from?
2. Why can't they put 'hi' in speech marks?
And so on.
It would be better if people who post like this could be roleplaying in a certain section, so then they can all be happy to roleplay in this way, and possibly grow too. This helps keep the peace between the semi-lit, and the newbies from roleplaying together to annoy one getting annoyed with the other. I guess they might not grow and evolve to become better, but at least this separates two different types of roleplayers to keep the peace.
Being a poster on the one of the most active RPs of the past three months, I feel that RPs can be successful, but not always. It should not be assumed that all rPers post one liners.
