It was slightly battered and obviously well used from its appearance as Alaparos slipped his wallet back into his bag. Unlocking the tool, he carefully extracted the knife before laying it on his lap. It could at least be used to score marks on the trees so that they could find their way back at a later time if Eyre ever got tired. "That's a wonderful idea. Would you like to take this as well if you ever get tired of stripping off the bark?" He offered, gently making sure that the blade was still sharp enough by pressing a thumb against the flat of the blade. A small bead of blood welled up and the cut seemed clean enough so he nodded satisfied. Despite appearances, he didn't actually use the knife all that much and it was the bottle opener and the inlaid compass that saw the most use. It was more of a safety measure more than anything, a means of deterring anyone who decided that a visibly disabled person would be an easy target.
Eyre faigned a neutral expression when the serpent expressed his opinion. "You know, sometimes it's better to leave things alive." There was a bite to Eyre's words, her true feelings bleeding out from her mouth. "And I trust that everyone is at least a little perceptive to notice a distinct lack of bark off of a few of the trees, especially since it would be at eye level for a lot of us."
"Anyhow, I highly doubt that we're missing anyone. This is already quite the adventuring party and if there were to be more, then it would be cause for worry. I already had my concerns with your presence, Hokori. Why would an elf of all races be called? Is it not common knowledge that the elves are proud creatures of immense power? Why then would one such as yourself be summoned if not to fix a dire problem? And the rest of us. A dire-wolf, sepant-folk, sea-goat, sentient puppet, and myself all called to a forest. It could well be a set up to a horrendous joke yet the punchline very well could be our lives. Any more and I would begin to wonder if we were called to save the world or something of that magnitude." The last sentence was almost sarcastic, and true enough if an avid reader was to take one look at their odd party, a fantastical story of magic and adventures on the world saving scale would begin to write itself.
"That may very well be the case...I suggest we carefully investigate our surroundings and after we've ensured that it's safe, we could attempt to fall asleep again." Though he wasn't really fond of the idea, simply because of how absurd yet logical it sounded, they didn't have many other options to begin with. "...or one of us could volunteer to sleep while others stood watch."
Another enraged roar tore from Derek's throat, his massive blade slashing at the receding form of a fairy that had dared to challenge him before leading him to the forest. There, the fae boy had attempted to rob him of several personal belongings. That had made him enraged, causing him to grow extremely aggressive and violent. As he tore through the underbrush, two fox heads poked out of his backpack, the only things that head been in the knapsack when he picked it up. Tabbethuh and Gerrin, his loyal friends. As they leapt down, the black and white foxes sniffed the air before zipping through the bushes and trees, passing under Vale without him noticing. Derek watched them go, his own progress slow due to the small amount of space his armor allowed for movement. However, he was soon met with a reptilian set of eyes staring into his. They both froze, attempting to force the other into cowering away. The most movement they made was a slight movement of the head, hardly a millimeter in any direction.
Rolling forward, Alaparos closed his eyes as he let his ears see what his eyes couldn't, using whatever sound that reverberated around the dense forest guide him. It seemed eerily quiet now, as if whatever had caused the noise had mysteriously disappeared. It was chilling to say the least as he was unable to even hear Vale's slithering. The forest had simply froze the second after the loud roar had faded, leaving everything stagnant. Cold sweat broke out on his brow and he was confronted with the fact that his mind was wavering between directly confronting whatever lay ahead or turning tail and running in order to formulate a better strategy. Whatever was happening it was far out of his human hands at this moment and Alaparos valued his mundane life as a supposed human too much to shed his restricting corpse to properly fight or flee. As if sensing his faltering will (of course it did. It was a magical item after all, closely connected to their owner) his tag sparked with vibrant magic before Alaparos quickly snatched it with one hand, closed fist hiding the errant magic that was charged and ready to fight at a moment's notice.
Gerrin and Tabbethuh soon found their ways to the assembled group, their wet noses twitching with curiosity as they inhaled the scents of each being.
Tucking away his observation into a corner of his mind to bring up at a later date, Alaparos quickly answered Eyre's question as to throw suspicion off himself as soon as he could. "I've always been more interested in magical theory than in magical application. I do know how to use telepathy but asking me to do it is an entirely different question that would require a separate answer." He admitted, flashing an apologetic smile at the group.
"What's the meaning of this, snakefolk?!? Is this why you wandered off away from the group? To settle a personal score?" he shouted as he took out his wand, just in case. The elves of older generations were right to call them primitive, barbarian and even brutal but Hokori grew up to cast aside such selfishness. Even though he himself was quite intimidated at the creature standing in front of Vale,he had to overwhelm at least his own fears. The least thing he wanted was to already lose a person Oneiros called.
