I'm posting this in help, because honestly... What am I supposed to do? We all swear sometime in our life but it seems like it's a particularly big issue right now.

I'm not saying that we should start pulling out swears in every sentence but I'm a bit troubled by this. .-.

*Notice: all examples I'm coming up with are "hypothetical" even if it did happen, this is pure coincidence
For example saying : Crap! I accidentally released a shiny purrloin into the wild! I feel ridiculously stupid. :(

For me, I don't really see "crap"(or stupid if it counts) as a bad word and in this context does this word violate the PH rules?

Taken from rules:
it is forbidden to use offensive swear words or to make any statement that is inappropriate for any age.

As you see, I don't see how this is inappropriate for "any" age, because I'm assuming everyone on here can read or else what's the point? By that age where you can read fluently I guess words like "stupid" don't isn't really swearing just negative. Also crap in this context doesn't mean any harm, you're basically having a "facepalm" moment.

So what I want to know is are negative words and "acceptable" swear words okay for pokeheroes? Or are they all banned?

(Obviously all those words you would never say to your parents or things that are banned)

This is a really interesting topic, and also very controversial.

We received several complainments in the past about users swearing in their personal feeds or forum posts. I was very suprised about those reports, because words like "Crap", "Sh't" or "Damn" weren't really offensive, in my opinion. The users didn't use those words to insult another member, obviously, but they used it in contexts just like your example.

It's apparently really based on where you come from: In most european countries, swearwords are used multiple times a day and no one complains. It's just normal for them.
But it seems very inappropriate to people who come from the USA, for example. Maybe not even whole America - but at least most states of it.

I don't feel offended in any way when someone uses the F-word when talking to me - but some people do, mostly children. And that's why we have to delete/remove those swear words and maybe even "warn" users if they swear constantly.
Don't worry, we won't lock any user account because of such swear words in facepalm-context. Nonetheless, you shouldn't overdo it and shouldn't use them to insult other members, obviously.

I don't ever use curse words. It's just wrong for me to curse. Words like "crap" don't bother me though.

I feel like only sexual words shouldn't be used, or at least censored, since those aren't appropriate to younger people. However, words that are practically equivalent to poop, stupid and hell aren't all that offensive unless used in the wrong context. I'm sure younger people use curse words more than older people, anyway. :P

I don't find crap to be a swear either, since it's the name if the guy who invented the toilet, Thomas Crapper ;3 Amd damn literally means curse, but I don't find that offensive either. I personally don't swear in real life, except for the two that I mentioned just now, and they technically don't count as swears, especially the former :p

Well, speaking from someone who does live in the USA, now, maybe it is just the area I have lived in, but pretty much, since 6th grade, children around me were swearing. They especially swore in highschool, and the younger generations after me are even swearing in elementary now and other extremely inappropriate things. However, a lot of USA movies have children swear in them. I personally do not enjoy nor think it's funny to see in a movie, but at the same time, I'm not going to make a big deal about it for in USA, we do have a right to free speech. ( Or are supposed to but technically don't. )

Either way, in my experiences, pretty much anyone and everyone swears. There's only a few random people that don't swear. They should probably be congratulated. But what I'm saying is I too don't mind swearing. I do not find it offensive unless it is directed at me or something I enjoy. Even so, the chances of me complaining is little to none. I personally think some people are just too sensitive. Though honestly? They probably just want something to complain about.

Though because this is a public website I understand if some rules need to be set to appease sensitive children or aggressive parents and or other types. ( No offense intended. )

Well I am not really offended by swear words as long as people don't overdo it. I know that on some other sites people tend to use F* word all the time than you get sentence like this:

F* I just F* did F* ....

It can be really annoying to read whole paragraph in which every second word is swear word. If it's not overused or if it's used in facepalm content I don't think that it should be removed ~ but when people overuse them/offend someone with those words than yes - it should be removed and reported.

I personally rarely use them because I was pretty much raised in a family where respect meant a lot and those words were never used around me.

I don't really find Crap, Sh't or Damn to be a swear word to me...
So I'm wondering, are we allowed to use those words? Not to insult someone, just to use them in text. And also words like badass...

Well, we Finns seem to swear a lot so I hear all kinds of swearing everyday and do that myself a lot too. Honestly, I don't really find any swear words offensive or insulting, they're just a part of my daily life. However, this doesn't mean I don't understand why swearing is forbidden, especially in a site like this.

I think using swear words is okay as long as you're not insulting or offending anyone.

...And what's wrong with badass? .o. I can see why Toothless mentioned it but for me it's like any other normal word. :p

This is a subject that has actually caused some trouble for me in my RL and I will admit that there was once a time where it had been a more questionable habit of mine than it is today.
Interestingly I picked it up from a girl I met in the six grade who had befriended me for like a week or two then suddenly for a completely idiotic reason started an argument with me and bullied me the rest of the year(she apologized the next school year but I was done with her anyway, she was a weird chick). There was a cuss word in practically every sentence she spoke.

Never in my life have I used cuss words as weapons at least not aloud. When I am upset with a stranger or acquaintance I may call them a few choice names mentally. But aloud they are only a form of emotional expression. Example: "That is so f****** awesome!" Or "Oh that's sh***y". Personally I don't see this type of use as offensive as long as it's not directed towards anyone or their beliefs/lifestyles as it never is by me.

Even so after several years I learned to use discretion around those who dislike it, mostly the lesson came from a lecture I received from the admin of a fandom forum I had been active with some years ago(I have recently become active there again but sadly the activity has severely dropped from what it was those years ago). It's not always an easy task restraining it when in a situation where the kinder word wouldn't be as fitting for what I am feeling and in these cases it can make me feel a little like Ariel in The Little Mermaid when Ursula stole her voice. Like a part of myself is being taken away from me. But most of the time I can deal.

When you get as much scolding from someone as I had from mostly my best friend you kind of have to learn something right?
I've constantly been surrounded by friends and family that see it in slightly different ways. My best friend and I once a few years ago got into a argument when she snapped at me for using the word 'damn' which I personally don't see as a cuss since it is also a beaver's home. My aunt whom had freaked one night last week over a slip I had in the store "The line is long, we could be standing in it for half a f****** hour" however I am pretty sure would not have reacted had I used the word 'damn' instead(though she did used to scold her own daughter, my younger cousin for the word 'stupid'). Honestly I had no idea where that had come from, not only was it a casual statement with no frustration in it but normally she is not one I would pull out an F bomb around. But I'm human, it happens. Sue me.
That same statement unaltered would not have been a problem for my mother at least not now, whereas it may have been while I was in middle or high school. She used to scold me for the word 'hell' and once in my junior year of high school sent me to my room for 'goddammit' specifically for the 'God' part. If it had just been 'damn it' or 'dammit' or whatever it would have been fine. Since recently getting together with her boyfriend she uses slightly more verbal F bombs than even I do. Ironic to the 'crap' controversy in this discussion, she was actually raised by a father, my grandfather who was one of those parents who had scolded for that word, or so she has told me.
Interestingly I have also had one or two F slips around my best friend in more recent years but surprisingly she's been ignoring them. Her scolding went far beyond cuss words and all of it seemed to have mellowed over the years.

So you see where I had to learn the difficult way exactly HOW to use discretion specific to multiple individuals who have even changed their reactions over the years. Yet even today I sometimes on internet forums have to be told not to swear in their environment. My second or third day here I had already used an expressional swear and though no one responded to it I am learning now scanning this thread that it's not well liked around here so I apologize. I am not sure I could say the same for my younger self but these days the key is to politely explain to me when I have done something displeasing and I will understand and correct it. Whereas scolding only makes me bite back. Something some people such as my aunt are still unable to grasp somehow. That night I described I had to stop her beginning a lecture about 'what if I had a job there' when I absolutely know better than THAT. I have such practiced control now that I would NEVER cuss aloud in a work environment. *eyeroll*

"Went b**** on me..."

You do realize that is using a vulgar word to attack someone, right? Not to mention that it needs to at least be censored here.

Actually it's not:

"When I am upset with a stranger or acquaintance I may call them a few choice names mentally."
Though I specify 'mentally' this just the same is NOT to the target's face. That is the point of the above statement. This person treated me like dirt for absolutely no reason, I hadn't done a thing to her. I had only begun the assignment the teacher had given in the class we were in together when according to her I needed HER permission to start. She took being the materials manager of our table as a queen's crown!

To one who has never done me any wrong or whom I love I'd never direct it in insult. This however was not an insult I intended the statement as an adjective not a noun.

I will reword it and apologize for the uncensored word. I had to leave the computer for a short time during the composition of that post so that error had escaped my attention and I see how it was misinterpreted, an awful habit of mine. Forgive me for causing an upset.
