Dear children, you are familiar with stories, are you not?

A story begins in a land, far off from our own. Vast fields rippling with yellows and greens and stacked with intricate castles and kingdoms of what would be a human child's fancy. A land where, unlike ours, good and evil are drawn in clear, precise lines. The side that wins is the one who is good, and the side that loses is the one at who human children must scowl. Winners and losers are the only thing that matters in a story.

Very good! But today is not about a tale intended to whisper morals into a child's ear, good children. Today, we are to discuss those who create those stories.

Do not misinterpret my words, my good students. I do not mean mortal men like Hans Andersen, or the Grimm Brothers, nor do I mean any great disrespect to their marvels. No, I mean their true writers. Beyond the fae and beyond the line of human memory. Our very creators, whom you, dear children will be the only mortals to know.

Whisked away as children, plucked from your mother's breast, and dropped into our arms; you have become the lens into the gods who have structured our world's perspective of good and evil. You are to perfect today's stories. Make good and evil exactly as our creators intended. Your purpose is nobler than any one you may have enjoyed as a human. You have become the essence of truth and righteousness.

You have all reached sixteen years of age. From here out, you will begin your mentorship. You are expected to fix the stories told today from the inside out, ensuring that they maintain the proper standards of the gods. Upon the end of our lunar year, the strongest apprentice will graduate and absorb the role of truthkeeper, mentoring the new children twenty years from now.

A question.

What, you ask, my student, will happen to the weakest of the lot?

You are not to notice humans. Only the stories you cradle in your arms, shielding from the twisted moralities of today. What you are doing is far more important than the fate of a lot of failures. If you must know, then you may question your teacher. But I doubt she will tell you more than me.

Please step into the portal. The realm awaits you on the other side.

I expect great things from you.

Please do our Gods proud.

Adrik Volkov

Truthkeeper Adrik.

Nothing fit together. He wasn't smart or talented or special. There was no title with the name Adrik. Just little shy Adrik and his little obsession with colours.

And even in the literal sense, ignoring the context that'd been ground into him his whole life. He wasn't a "truth keeper".

How could that title be given to a liar?

How could they tell him that he was one of them, when he'd been the bottom of his class his whole life?

Felt sorry for me, more likely than not, he thought miserably. He'd shown no sign of attunement to literature or the gods above. He couldn't understand symbolism or signs or meaning or anything. There was no reason for them to select him for anything but pity.

The portal was wide open. No one had stepped through yet. The caretaker stood primly, her inhuman yellow eyes tracking your every movement.

Waiting.

Watching.

Wanting to see who wanted to take the first move.

They'd fought so hard, waited so long- and here was the trigger point. Would taking the step forward show arrogance or diligence? Pride or pragmatism? Right or wrong?

No one wanted to move.

No one wanted to make the wrong call.

Adrik would stay in the middle of the crowd. Someone else could take that first step. If it was credit they wanted, it was credit they could get.

The losers couldn't take chances.

"Go," the woman whispered.

Ayran held the rubix cube in his hand tightly, as if it was going to disappear the next moment. He looked at the portal infront of them, and then at the Caretakers uncaring eyes that doesn't seem human, then back at himself, and the people beside him .

No one was taking a single step forward yet, nor does Ayran want to either. He doesn't want to nor does he think he is ready t take on this burden.

Once they enter this portal, everything they've been working towards, what would they become, would they be for naught. He doesn't know, because he is unsure, he is unwilling to take a step forward first.

Ayran usually is a smart, quick-witted kid, who is mischievous and will always smile, but he just couldn't right now. His muscles are tense, observing every move he could see from the people beside him. 'Are they ready for this, no, am I ready for this?' Ayran asked to himself.

Kendo glanced around. None of these people were doing anything, with an impatient huff, he stepped forward. He turned to look at the others, smirking.

"What are you fools waiting for, eh? If there's a portal, the obvious decision is to go through it, innit?"

Kendo took another step forward, or backwards, I guess.

"Honestly, y'all. We've been training for this moment. Just go through the [gosh-darned] portal."

Kaori rubbed her bracelet. Why wasn't anybody coming forward? Why wasn't she coming forward? What would happen if anybody went in the portal? These questions raced through her mind. But no, she was not going to be the first one in the portal, even if it would cost her life. If she went inside, what would happen?

Kaori was a smart girl, sure. But she was not brave. And she would not go through the portal first.

Ayran looked at Kendo who walked out of the group first, and laughed inside his head, while keeping a straight face outwards. 'This is so him, but hey.. hes not wrong.'

Ayran stepped forward next, and looked at the others, "Y'know he's not wrong. We've been waiting for this! C'mon!" Ayran smiled mischievously like he always does with others, twirling his prized rubix cube in his fingertips smoothly, and was right beside of Kendo waiting for the others to brace themselves and come forward.

Aki clutched his jacket tightly.

Part of him wanted to forget about any dangers or risks and enter the portal. He was a curious person, after all, but the logical solution would be to wait for someone to enter it first and then determine whether it was safe or not.

He bit his lip and stared at Kendo expectantly, distancing himself from the group.

Kaori looked at both boys who stood up. If they were already close, why don't they go first? But of course, she's too much of a mouse (figuratively- she's kind of a cat) to speak up. DUH

kendo eyed the others. Clearly, they were waiting for him to go through. he took a few more steps forward.

"Welp. Here goes nothing!"

He stepped through the portal, not seeming worried at all.

Ayran sighed seeing Kendo stepping into the portal, and shrugged "Might as well, Cya at the other side!" Ayran waved at the others, and stepped through the portal, with one of his hand still playing with the rubix cube before solving it, one moment before the portal swallowed the cube as well.

Since she wouldn't technically be the first person to go through the portal, she hesitantly stepped forward. 'Welp. This is it. Good luck me.' she thought as she stepped through the portal hesitantly, still rubbing her silver bracelet. She braced herself for something bad, maybe something worse, not knowing what was ahead of her........................

Aki rolled his eyes and attempted to reason with himself.

I...guess they wouldn't try to kill us. But there's always the chance that they would...

...Whatever. I'm going anyway.

Aki carefully stepped through the portal, making sure to keep himself in a defendable position when he emerged on the other side.

Theo looked at the portal, half expecting something bad to come out of it. I've been waiting for this moment...still, why do I feel so uneasy? He fidgeted with his necklace as he sighed, watching the others go through.

He looked back at everyone who hasn't gone through, and then at the portal again. He waited for a few seconds before hesitantly following behind Aki. This could completely change our lives as we know it...It's weird to think about it.

On the other side of the portal, Kendo fell flat on his face.

"[REDACTED]! ow!"

He got up, dusting the dirt off of his jacket. he looked around.

"... What the [REDACTED] is this place?"

Ayran fell right after Kendo, atleast on his face, he protected his rubix cube on his chest as he landed on his butt.

"[QUACK]! IT HURTS!"

Ayran: TwT

Ayran stumbled as he stood up, rubbing his poor butt that just had been tortured with one hand and examined his rubix cube with the other.

"Don't ask me, I don't [QUACK] know." Ayran grumbled and sighs in relief when he saw his rubix cube was unscathed.

Kaori fell a bit after Ayran, landing a couple inches away from him. She rubbed her side of her head, which was where she had landed. Her head hurt. Totally. Standing up, she asked, "Where exactly is this place? Looks kind of like my bedroom" she added, muttering. She looked at her bracelet. Good. No form of thievery had happened when she was in the portal. She rubbed her bracelet even more. Sure, this placed looked like her bedroom, but was it as friendly as her bedroom?

Theo fell on his back. He struggled to get up to a sitting position, but then just opted to stay laying down. He groaned. "I think I broke something-" He said. Ow. No warning or anything, just 'go through this portal'. Wow.

"...yeah, where are we?"

"I mean, it looks kind of like my old bedroom" Kaori suggested. "But not as cuddly-looking".

She bent down and looked at the grass. "And the grass isn't pink enough" she added with a frown.

"Very fun." Theo mumbled, shielding his eyes from the sun. im just gonna assume its bright and sunny "It looks like unicorn puke-" That was his creative insight on this. Everything hurts. He made an attempt to atleast sit up again, which was successful. Push the pain away. Just push it away. It's nonexistent.

Mercy took a hesitant step towards the portal. She knew she was strong, that if this was some sort of cutthroat test to weed out failures, she would be ready. That knowledge brought her to no comfort. In part, she knew there was a certain level of worrying that should be done in such a unique situation. Mostly, though, it was her brain being stubborn. It knew that she would be fine, but it didn't care.

Another few hesitant steps, and she was through the portal. Her brain swirled with both nausea and anxiety. She lifted her bowed head, taking in the scene. Trying to gauge the urgency or lack thereof.
