Agathe followed along behind Titian who made noises taking over
Shaye's job while he wasn't there. Soon enough the temple came
within view. Shaye flew over to them and landed on Agathe's
shoulder.
A bolt of lightening crashed to the earth followed only second
later by a crash of thunder. Sasha jumped, ushering everyone in as
rain poured down. "Shaye, do your friends know the temple is open
to them?" She asked, looking to the ceiling for any sign of the
birds they had dined with.
Agathe repeated the question and Shaye cawed, which was echoed from
the upstairs area where the other birds had congregated. "He says
they're in their usual space and are happy there." Shaye flew up
onto one of the nearby columns, and Titian was looking around
sniffing here and there, the fur still held gently in his mouth.
Sasha took the rabbit to the listen and set it up so they could
keep cooking it. Then she reached for the fur. "I can set that up,
Titian, if you want to settle in. The storm feels like it is going
to be here a long while."
Titian let go of the fur and found a spot to sit that was near the
fire but also out of the way. "You know, I have a feeling that
you're right..." Agathe moved over near the fire to warm up and dry
off a little as she had gotten damp from the rain.
"One small thing about being related to That Guy is that I can
sense storms. Mostly. Once they are here, I can mostly judge the
length too. You guys warm up here. I am going to go grab some
spare, dry clothes and some blankets for Titian to make a nest out
of. It'll be kinder on your body thenthe hard floor, buddy," Sasha
said, untying her bag and setting it down on the counter.
Agathe repeated what Sasha had said about getting him a nest, and
he yapped a reply, his bushy tail sweeping the floor making a soft
sound. "He said thank you very much for your kindness." Shaye flew
over and landed on Agathe's shoulder to talk to her softly. Titian
had gotten up and was following Sasha around to see if he could
help carry anything.
Sasha watched Titian follow her and giggled. "You are absolutely
adorable," she said, leading the way towards her den. She ducked
in, turning so he wouldn't see her as she changed her shirt. Once
she was ready, she snagged some clothes for Agathe and a few
blankets.
Meanwhile, in the kitchen, the god of war was sneaking in. He had
to be quick. Before his uncle found him. Spotting Agathe, he
paused. "There you are. Not my cousin, but you are a major part of
her life," he said softly so as not to startle her.
Titian's tail kept wagging slowly as he followed her, but he
stopped when she did. Obviously she didn't want to be seen, so he
looked the other way when she hid her upper half. He didn't know
why, but that was how she wanted it.
Agathe was terribly confused as she heard the very faint footsteps,
and she was also a bit scared, but she made it look like she hadn't
heard him, in case this was someone that was going to attack them.
When he spoke she got even more confused. What killer would let
their presence be known? "Cousin? Sasha? What are you talking
about?" She started to get up wondering exactly who this person
was.
Sasha turned around to see him turned and let out a small laugh. "I
don't know if you can understand me right now, but thank you. Force
of habit to not have others see me change. I think it is a human
modesty thing."
"I don't think she would be happy to see me here...I wish her no
ill will. I am on her side in this. My father and his brothers run
around forcing their will on others more often then they should.
Something that frequently has me at odds with them. Victors write
the history. But war isn't always about greed. Sometimes it's about
doing the right thing...Sasha upset Poseidon with her
dismissal...he is furious and Athena plans to punish her. They plan
war with Sasha. I wanted to warn you both and give you something to
help. Athena will ensure another gorgon is born before having Sasha
killed. The poor, sweet girl has resigned herself to this fate. But
it doesn't have to be that way." Ares made his way closer, kneeling
before Agathe so that he wasn't a threat, should Sasha return.
Titian tilted his head, not understanding her words, but
understanding her tone of voice. He stood up seeing that she was
now ready with the items to make a nest. Yes, those would be very
comfortable and warm.
Agathe had gotten to her feet and was listening intently. This
didn't sound like Poseidon, but how did she know for sure? "You
said Sasha was your cousin... So who are you exactly? I don't want
to offend a god, but I need to know without doubt."
Sasha set off, offering Titian one of the blankets to carry if he
wanted to.
"I'm not offended. I am glad you asked. I'm Ares. But I am not the
villain I am made out to be. There are better things to go to war
for. Like love, family, and the well being of others. In this case,
I want justice. This has gone on too long without someone saying it
is wrong," Ares told her. He folded his hands in his lap. He was
dressed in all sorts of sheathes and weapon holders but none held
his weapons. He did so on purpose. To show he meant no harm.
Titian carefully took the blanket in his mouth, mindful to not bite
her hand on accident, and strode off after her, his little claws
making scritch-scratch sounds on the marble.
Agathe was silent for a moment before reaching a hand out, not
touching him yet, but hovering in the air a few inches from his
face. "May I see you?" It was a simple request, but perhaps an odd
one if context wasn't given. She had stumbled upon many other
temples in her life, and the priests wouldn't turn away a poor
blind woman. They bring her in and help her to "see" their gods.
They would then throw her out when she would talk to the animals
that find their way in. She had "seen" the statue of Ares only
once, but that's almost another power wielded by Agathe. She never
forgets how a face feels.
Sasha giggled, opening the kitchen door before freezing. Who was
before Agathe and why was he hear? He looked like a warrior...she
should run! She should run and hide! But Agathe was there! What if
he hurt her? Tried to torture her? Frozen in fear, she watched her
friend.
"Please do." Tilting his head up, Ares made sure she had full
access to his facial features and could map out her face.
Titian stopped when Sasha stopped and he saw Agathe with another
person. What was she doing? Why did Sasha seem afraid?
Agathe slowly closed the distance, her fingertips soft and warm.
She trailed them over his forehead, down his eyebrows, very lightly
over his eyelids, she noted the rise of his cheekbones and the
straight line of his jaw that ended in a strong flat edge. His lips
were slim and taut, but they were surprisingly smooth. His skin
showed signs of what felt like old scars hidden beneath the perfect
skin above. When she had finished, she bowed her head and slid down
on her knees. She truly was in the presence of a god. A god that
wanted to help. "Forgive me..." She whispered, just barely making a
sound.
"Agathe," Sasha cried out brokenly, darting forward to protect her.
"Please! Please, don't hurt her! Do whatever you want to me but
please, leave her alone!" She begged, eyes shut tight as she
wrapped herself around her friend. She had to protect Agathe!
Gently, a hand found her shoulder. She jerked, startled by the
gentleness in the callused hand.
"Sasha, I did not plan to hurt her. I know it's hard to believe.
But I am not here to hurt you or your friends. I want to help.
That's why Poseidon went nuts and is currently attempting to scare
me off. I know you've been hurt and I am so, so sorry. Agathe, you
need not kneel before me. I am impressed by the two of you. I don't
see myself as better. I just want to talk and to give help and
guidance, if you'll let me," Ares said softly, pulling back and
making himself appear a non threatening as possible.
Agathe was startled by Sasha's sudden cry, and she let out a tiny
sound as she was surrounded by her friend's coils. "I'm alright!
I'm alright! It's okay Sasha, he's not going to hurt us..." She
said, still trying to calm her thumping heart as it pounded away in
her chest.
Titian had run forwards with Sasha and had sat beside her, the
blanket still held in his mouth. Why were these human things so
easily startled?
"...Are you sure?" She whispered, still frightened. Sash relaxed a
fraction, pulling herself off of Agathe but staying between the
two, her eyes still squeezed shut. "Who are you? Why are you
talking about the gods?" She asked, fear and anger making her voice
sharp.
"Cousin, I am Ares-" he began but was cut off when Sasha jerked to
the side, hands overing her eyes and she shook her head.
"No! Why are you here? Why is the god of war here?" She groaned,
her hair hissing and thrashing at the air. They warned Ares away
but he pressed forward, hugging Sasha gently.
"Cousin, I know the others hurt you. My sister and uncle primary
among them. But they are wrong. Sasha, I want to protect you. I
should have stepped in earlier...I should have stepped in for
Medusa and her daughter. For your mother as well. But I didn't. I
regret that deeply. I am not here to declare war on you. I swear I
am not. Turn me to stone, if you so choose. But I will not be any
part of the mess on Olympus. Is there any way I can prove it to
you?" Ares asked, ignoring the snake bites.
"...you...you are being hurt but won't stop hugging me...I can't
get them to stop..." Sasha whispered, tears trailing down her
cheeks. "You really want to help?"
Titian was just as confused as Shaye, who had returned from
checking on his friends and was watching from a nearby pillar.
Agathe, was startled by Sasha's outburst, but she could understand
that it came from years, from a lifetime of hatred of the gods.
"Sasha, he means what he says... I listened to his heart... It beat
strong and constant. If he was lying it would speed up, but it
didn't. He actually looks like the statue of Ares... Sasha, he's
telling the truth..."
"You can stop them, Sasha. I believe in you. Take a breathe, then
tell them down," Ares told her with all the patience and kindness
of an older brother.
Sasha, still shaking, did as he said. Her snakes calmed. She gasped,
eyes flying open before she squeezed them shut. "I'm sorry...I
didn't...you are on my side?" She asked, awed. "I don't want to
look...I am afraid that I will turn you to stone...I trust you,
Agathe. So...wow..." She murmured, giving him a hug.
