"Hmm...probably best to leave it open. Then nothing will get on the
fur. When we for sure head back, we can roll it over a log and pin
it so it'll stay. We can hang it and scrap the back when we get
back." Carefully, Sasha cut off the skin, drapping it over a large
rock before pushing a stick through the rabbit and putting it over
a couple of vertical sticks.
Agathe listened to the strange sounds of the knife working through
the flesh, and then the sound of the limp fur on the rock. She
almost winced as she heard the stick being shoved into the body,
but that's how it's supposed to be done. It just sounded worse than
it actually was. Shaye and Titian watched, curious as to the
process.
Sasha noticed the wince and her heart squeezed. "As far as I know,
we feel nothing after death. I really hope that is true. That any
pain caused after doesn't register to the soul. It still sounds
bad. I tend not to use a spit. But in this case, it is the cleanest
and quickest way to cook it. Sorry."
"It wasn't that, I know that after death we feel nothing, but it
just sounds strange..." Agathe had heard that sound before. She had
heard that sound from someone that was like her, someone that had
an ability. Someone that was called a demon. She was lucky, she was
only beaten. This person had been skinned. Then again, that person
used their powers to kill someone. She'd never done that. Her
memories worked their way to the surface and she sat there in
silence, her mind echoing with the screams before they fell away
into the night.
"Oh?" Sasha asked, taking in Agathe's quiet demeanor. Once she had
things set up, she moved to sit beside her and wrap an arm around
her. "Not sure if I have ever said in so many words, but I am here
if you ever need someone to talk to."
Agathe had zoned out a bit of the moment, and was a bit startled as
Sasha's arm was put around her. "I-I'm okay... Maybe later
though... It might be nice to talk things out with someone who can
understand the struggles of a human..." She chuckled slightly,
obviously trying to lighten her mood. Titian had moved closer and
was watching the two of them through the fire. Shaye was still in
the tree with a bird's eye view.
Sasha smiled, nodding. "Of course. I am happy to help however I
can. You warm enough? It seems to be getting cold...that could just
be my slightly cooler blood noticing it though..." She murmured.
Agathe nodded and drew her legs a little closer to herself. "It is
getting a bit colder, I'm going to assume that the sun is going
down? Or maybe it's clouds?" She took a few sniffs of the air.
"Doesn't seem like clouds..."
"I'm confused about that too...the sun isn't suppose to set for
another couple of hours, and I don't see storm clouds...but I
feel...something," Sasha murmured. "Some storm building...like the
eye of a hurricane..."
At the word hurricane Agathe started to sniff at the air a little
more purposefully. "I don't smell one though... I've been able to
smell them before and be able to warn people... I just, I don't
smell anything..." She sounded genuinely worried about the failing
of her senses.
"I believe you. I just....can't shake the feeling something is
off," Sasha said, looking around for any sign of the ocean. They
were inland pretty far so she couldn't see it. Somehow that
unnerved her.
"Perhaps we should call this adventure short and take our new
friend back to the temple? Or should we get to high ground?" Agathe
stood up trying to feel if the wind was picking up.
"That might be a good idea...I just don't know if we want to be out
here if something hits...we can come back out whenthis goes away.
Nothing to stop us from regular adventures like this," Sasha
agreed, wondering briefly if the foreboding feeling she was having
came from her link to the gods. Or Poseidon's random visit.
"Alright, you two... We're going back to the temple to stay safe.
If there's anything you need, grab it now." Agathe told to Shaye
and Titian, both scooted off to gather what they'd need. Shaye
headed for the temple with a caw, and Titian went inside his home
and came out quickly with nothing, having checked things over, but
needed nothing. "Let's go then. Shaye went back to the temple to
make sure all is well."
Sasha grabbed the stick with their partially cooked meal before
looking over at the fur. "Would you like to carry the fur, Agathe?
Or should we leave it here and come back for it?" She asked, makijg
sure to completely put out the fire.
"I'll carry it." Agathe went over to grab it, but before she could
get to it, Titian took it up carefully in his maw, and he gekkered.
"Thank you, now let's go."
Sasha nodded, setting off towards home. She could find the temple
with ease on the island. Something about the waters so close to it
called to her senses.
