"Please, find a spot, we might be a little crowded, but don't worry, there's space for everyone." The level ones were ushered into a wide room, void of all furniture, apart from the long podium squeezed against the east wall, and colourful banners hanging on top of it. Above the banners, seven rings of balconies were separated from the main room by glass panels, as if they were zoo enclosures. Faces were pressed against the glass, hundreds of students watching as the level ones timidly stepped into the room. When the noise of moving bodies subsided, a clear voice rang across the room, and all heads turned towards the tall figure of a beautiful woman dressed in a luxurious red gown, standing in the middle of the podium.
"Welcome, to the Institute of the Unique, Talented, and Magical! And welcome to your sorting ceremony!" Then suddenly, the room dissolved into darkness, and all the level ones found themselves entangled in tendrils of shadow.

This year, she was the top of the school. A curious smile played on her face as she considered the possibilities of the year ahead.

Well, now this is certainly interesting…
Maybe I should give it a try…”

She summoned a glowing ball of light and made it float in front of her, lighting her way, though there wasn't much to see. Just neverending layers of darkness. There were a couple of other struggling students, and she used her sword to cut through their bonds, giving a quick wink as she continued on her way. Always good to gain a few allies.

It was interesting to see who reacted to the darkness first. She had gotten her wits about her quickly enough when she was eleven. And it was the princess who was clutching a sword who reacted first. She and a couple of the others had orbs of light floating in front of them.
Jack grinned, making sure no one else saw her. She loved watching the first years overcome their first obstacles.

Pleasure was never an emotion Kaori had felt. Her entire life was misery, sadness, loneliness, all of the above. Just an empty world, with no emotions, and no pleasure. Just black. No white. No gray. Everything was the same blandness, except for those small outliers in the straight stream of order. Those small little differences were everywhere. And Kaori's need and longing to fix them only got worse, and then one day, she found out the truth, the reason why her life was so... empty. Her father. A good-for-nothing, useless, and cruel man. Who left her and her mother to survive alone. To find a way out of their mess of a life by themselves...
Lost in her memories, Kaori no longer payed attention to the selection process, but she snapped out of her trance when a small ball of light in her peripheral vision caught her eye. She turned towards the light, which seemed to have come from one of the level ones. A female, going around and freeing the others. 'Well, this is different...' Kaori thought as she focused her attention on the girl...

Eris was beyond nervous upon entering the school, only to become surrounded by darkness after first being brought to a room with glass walls, blocking the level ones from the other students. Was this a test?? She was grabbed by a tendril, but due to Eris's nerves, it froze to solid ice upon contact. She noticed other students, level one students, as well. They needed to find a way out, somehow...
The eighth years were laughing as the first years struggled. A withering glare shut them up fast enough. For Ogd's sake, they were eighteen. Grow up.

Better not talk yet and seem too annoying. I haven't really payed attention to other students the last seven years.
He snapped his fingers and a few fires turned grey. The colors warped and twisted their way toward him and levitated above his hand.
He shot the color to the one with the newspaper and smiled when it twirled around her head.
"Hey."
He walked over and leaned over the railing.
"Those first-years seem to be struggling. Not as much as me though. I'm not sure if you remember, I don't even think I was at your pace, but I faceplanted and got stabbed in the gut by a metal bar. Still have the scar."

"Atticus Redding. I remember, of course. You're good. I can't believe it only took you eight years to talk to me." She smiled. "How was your summer?"
