Are the contents decided when you get the boxes? Or is it picked when opened?

I have a bunch, and I'm saving them for meltan candies, but if there's no chance at getting candies from the boxes I already have... There'd be no point in waiting to open them.

Thank you. I was pretty sure that would be it, otherwise that would be stupid strain on the site to store all that info. But I had friends telling me different.
