Understandably, her mother was beyond upset by the death and, as a result, cursed the children involved as punishment. These children became more probable to fatal sicknesses - representing her daughter’s vulnerability and inability to receive help. After numerous deaths, she was branded a witch and sentenced to death at the stake. As the fire blazed, a second curse was placed upon those who survived.
To pass on her skills in black magic, the second curse slowly turned the blood colour of the remaining children into tar-black (although, only noticeable when bleeding from a cut or other injury). Upon the release of the blood, the dark energy takes over, the child becoming destructive until they themselves are destroyed. However, in the events that the injury is sealed, the child will begin the return to their usual selves.
Expectedly, some we caught and suffered the same fate. The ‘lucky’ handful that survived unknowingly passed down the curse to their own children. And that’s why a mass-burning has become a tradition every 10 years, where everyone in the town is tested. Because the blood doesn’t turn instantly, it’s rather random; One year, someone’s blood could be normal, the next, it’s tainted.

It’s winter and the night before the next official burning. Anxiety and anticipation are normal to be felt during this time. A large, intimidating stake had already been set up in the center of the town, with firewood having already been collected and positioned at the base. What would usually be market stalls, were now stations, where residents would be required to visit the next day for blood testings. Tomorrow, security would be heavy.
Those less confident than others, tend to “test themselves” the night before as a last-minute check. Pricking a finger with a fine needle, or such, and looking for that single drop of blood - a fine needle, ensuring that the wound would be small and quick to seal, just in case.
Testing positive for the curse can only end in one of two ways: death or fleeing the town. Taking the main road would be too risky, but the surrounding forest would be dense enough to lose any trackers for the next couple of days.

- Note that for powers to work, one must already be injured/bleeding
- Those who aren’t affected can eventually learn spellcasting; they cannot have this ability straight away
- Carrying a weapon is a-okay for defence when not using magic
- Relationships are fine as long as they’re not made the focus
