"No, thank you. You make Eva happy," Gen. Lovelace smiled. "I have
asked an escort to take you back home Evangelina. Cassius? You're
welcome to go with her. I'll send a letter with you to five my
wife. She'll set you up with a job there, if you'd like."
"I would love, too, Sir. I would love to see Kentucky. But, I miss
my hometown. But, it's better to leave this place, than to risk
their lives on me. Maybe I'm an outlaw now. So, I'll go with Lina.
... It's too boring if I do nothing at your place," said Cassius to
Gen. Lovelace.
"I'm glad you would like to work there. And I know Evangelina and
my wife will make sure you're all set up with anything you need,"
Gen. Lovelace said.
"Maybe when this is all over, we can go to Baton Rouge," Evangelina
suggested. "I would love to meet your mom."
"No, Sir. It's your decision. It's better if we have to leave now.
I don't want Lina to get hurt, Sir. It's okay if somebody wants to
hurt her. I'm a soldier, too. No need to worry about," said
Cassius. Cassius is hoping to keep Evangelina out of harm.
"So, Lina, shall we go then?" said Cassius. "By the way, where's my
shotgun? ... Oh, right! I left it at the tent. Lina, Sir, be right
back." Then Cassius left and finds his shotgun.
"Where could my shotgun be?" Few seconds of searching his shotgun.
Finally, he found it, near the bed. Cassius grabs his shotgun and
went back to Evangelina and her father.
Cassius return with his shotgun. But, he forgot something, too, his
backpack.
"Do I have a... Oh, that's right. My backpack." Cassius rushed and
went to his tent.
Instead of returning to their place, he went to the tent near the
post. Cassius is terrified of the glaring Union soldiers, while
passing to his tent, where his co-soldiers stayed days ago.
Evangelina curled into Cassius's side and looked up at Ben. "Ben,
please move. I want to go home. Cassius and I need rest. Please,
just let us get his things."
"No! I saw you first. I have followed you. I have sent you gifts
and tried to court you! How can you pick him? He's a confederate!"
Ben shouted.
"I sent them back. I don't want them. I don't love you, Ben. You
don't love me! You only want me for the position I would get you.
Cassius is different. He is kind and sweet and brave and strong!
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to get his things!" Evangelina
informed Ben. She pushed past him and into the tent.
Cassius, along with Evangelina, entered the tent. He gets his
backpack and puts his things in his backpack. Then, Cassius tries
to say something about the incident a while ago.
"Lina, thank you for protecting me, ... but you don't need to
informed Ben. I think Ben is right. I am still a Confederate Army,
until now. What if... I do something wrong to you? What if I am
still a bad Confederate soldier, that you even don't expect about
me?" Cassius warned Evangelina about herself. "If you believe that
I'm a good person, I will do whatever it takes to protect you, for
better or for worse. I'll promise to you that," said Cassius to
Evangelina.
Evangelina paused and looked over at him. After he was done
talking, she walked over too him and placed a hand over his heart.
"I don't care about sides in this matter. Why do Union people have
to be good and Confederate bad? Aren't both sides equally
passionate? No, Confederates aren't bad. Just confused. Now, the
unit that held us? That is bad. Some of them were mean and nasty
for the sake of it. This? Right here? Your heart? It's huge and
warm and kind! You won't hurt me, Cassius. You are so kind and
gentle."
