Agathe smiled and held out one of her hands. "I'll let you place my
hand if you wouldn't mind." She took a breath as she remembered
something. "Oh! I had offered you a back rub earlier today, I
think. If you'd like me to do that still..."
"That sounds like a fine plan." Agathe got up onto her knees so she
could be a little higher to reach Sasha's shoulders easier. "Would
you want to tell me more about your life here on the island? The
happier parts?"
Sasha smiled, settling in for some relaxation. "Well, growing up
with legs,I ran as much as I possibly could around the island. I
helped mama plant stuff in the garden, fish and just be a kid. I
have never been afraid of thunderstorms. Watching the ocean churn
and bubble seemed...satisfactory? Like I was happy when he got
upset. Most of it is just nature at work but yeah. Being tucked
into bed was always fun. I slept curled up with my mother
sometimes. Safe in the coil of her tail. Other times I slept in
bed. She would sing and read me stories. I have lived through those
stories. And she let me reenact my favorite parts."
Agathe gently began kneading Sasha's shoulders, being careful to
not apply too much pressure. "All of that sounds nice." She smiled.
"I was never afraid of thunderstorms either, but I didn't really
feel safe during them since other people wouldn't be able to see
well and they might run into me." She chuckled slightly. "But
sleeping in the coil of your mothers tail sounds like you'd feel
quite safe." She had decided not to mention her lack of parents,
and how she'd never really felt safe sleeping anywhere.
Sasha went almost limp, enjoying the pressure on her back and
shoulders. "I am glad that thunderstorms didn't bother you. Do you
mind if I ask you some personal questions?"
"Go for it." Agathe said, grinning as she felt the relaxation from
Sasha. She was very pleased that she could elicit such a response
with such a simple action.
"Do you remember when you first started talking to animals? And
what is it like? Were you born blind?" Sasha asked quietly, giving
Agathe plenty of room to work.
Agathe's smile fell slowly, but she kept up the gentle massage. "I
remember animals being confused about how I was speaking because it
wasn't complete sentences, and I'm pretty sure it was animals that
actually taught me how to speak... But yeah, I was born blind, so I
don't know if it was an animal or a person. It was a very long time
ago, and I try not to dwell on the past. Specifically my past." She
chuckled slightly. "Every animal has their own voice, and each
species sort of has their own way of speaking and their own
social ways. For instance, ants and other bugs speak in very high
pitched voices. Birds have serious honor codes and other things
along those lines. I don't have much practice with snakes, but do
you have any other questions?" She was very happy to keep up the
massage for as long as Sasha would allow her. She wanted to repay
the woman for being so kind to her, so this felt like just the
first step of many.
Sasha took that in, chuckling as she remembered their feathered
friends. "Birds are seriously amazing." She was silent a long
moment before reaching up to put a hand over one of Agathe's.
"...how did you come to be on this island? What happened to send
our paths on a very welcomed collision course? I am not
complaining. And if you do not wish to say, I won't press.
But...something tells me it was not good. I want to understand and
make sure from here on out, you get the best. That you feel
treasured, heard, seen and loved. I feel that way with you here,"
she whispered, a lump forming in her throat. She had not stopped
Agathe from giving the massage, merely held her hand atop the
woman's. Tears pooled in her eyes as she imagined what it must have
been like for Agathe, who could bot swim, to manage to get onto an
island.
Agathe's hands merely paused in their movements as the question was
asked, and quickly resumed their gentle motions. "It wasn't good. I
had been deemed a witch in a town that was right on the sea. They
dragged me through the crowd... By whatever they could reach..." In
her mind the event was replaying itself. The emotions, the sounds,
the pain. "They had almost beaten me into unconsciousness, but I
suppose I was lucky that I was still awake when they threw me into
the boat and shoved me out with the tide... After I could move I
explored the raft and found no paddles, no water, no food... I was
very fortunate to be able to squeeze myself under the front end of
the boat where there was an overhang of wood. Otherwise I would be
terribly sunburnt, and I would have died out there..." She took a
slow breath as she remembered the moment that the rocking of the
boat stopped as she hit the shore of Sasha's island. "I don't know
how long I was out there, but feeling the solid ground beneath me
was probably the most hopeful feeling I've ever had..." She
chuckled slightly. "And even more luck to come upon your temple,
and you. The most caring and kind person I've ever met." She hadn't
realized she'd started crying, and only made that part known when
she had to sniffle. However, she hadn't stopped massaging. She
liked the repetitive motion of it.
Sasha listened, her own tears falling freely as she imagined the
scene. She wanted to take the boat, storm back to that town and
simply scream her frustration as she tore through the town, looking
and acting a monster. To be the conciquence of hurting Agathe. Her
eyes would be closed, of course, but sending them running for their
lives sounded pretty appropriate. Sasha realized Agathe was crying
and it only increased her frustration, sadness and tears. When the
woman stopped talking, she turned, cupping Agathe's face between
her hands. Her thumbs brushed away the tears. "Some higher power,
not the gods or their titan parents, but some caring, loving power
had to have brought you here. Maybe they knew we could help each
other. Because you make me feel normal. Feel good and whole."
Agathe remained silent after she'd finished, not being able to
trust her voice. When Sasha held her face, she was tense at first,
completely unused to the near alien gentleness, and she hadn't
realized that she had leaned into her touch feeling more relaxed.
"I had hoped that someone had heard my cries for help... I just
never expected them to lead me to you... But I'm very glad they
did." She pushed through Sasha's hands and hugged the woman
tightly. "You make me feel the same way... Like a river that's
finally found the sea..." A final tear fell down her face, and a
smile spread across her features, so pure and it held so much
emotion behind it.
Sasha held onto her tightly in the hug. "That is a good
description. I really like your smile. It is beautiful. Absolutely
beautiful. Thank you for sharing it with me," she whispered,
smiling back as she watched that smile.
Agathe blushed and chuckled softly, obviously feeling shy about
being complimented. "Thank you for letting me share it, and giving
me reasons to smile." Her grey eyes, though they never truly could
be used for what they were intended for, they could still hold
someone's gaze if she managed to look in the right direction, which
she had done, and was "looking" right into Sasha's.
Sasha smiled back, gazing into her eyes right back. She enjoyed the
moment, committing it to memory. "You're welcome, Agathe. Now, I
believe I get to return the favor of a back rub. Meanwhile, you may
and are welcome to pet my scales if you'd like."
"I have my tail tucked behind me so if you want to sit down and I
will move accordingly, we can try that. I am pretty sturdy so I
think even if you did, nothing would happen," Sasha replied,
keeping her tail out of the way.
"But I likely would have hurt you if I had, and I don't want to
hurt you... I never want to hurt you..." Agathe said as she turned
herself around and sat down so Sasha wouldn't have to move much.
She reached a hand up and gently scratched an old looking scab on
her scalp. Her hair was never longer than an inch in any one spot,
so any bruises, marks, or cuts were plainly visible.
Sasha noticed, her heart clenching painfully in her chest. Never
again, she vowed. Never. Then the gorgon did something she thought
she would never do. She offered up a sort of prayer for the gods to
hear. ..if one of you is listening...forget me and my life. It's
whatever. But you all owe my great grandma and there is no one but
me to collect on that...so you all will protect her! Whatever goes
down, whatever pain and cruel plans you have set up, you leave this
woman out of it! She goes unscathed! All your curses and your petty
grudges get left behind for her. You stop it! reaching up, she
wiped away her own tears before drying her hands on the hem of her
shirt. She moved her long tail around Agathe, making a lose coil
around her. When she opened her mouth, Sasha was glad to find she
managed a mostly steady voice. "Safe and sound, now. Her hands
lifted to Agathe's shoulders and she began to rub gently, mindful
of any injuries.
