"The two of you make twenty-six sailors. They'll eat you out of pantry if you're not careful, Chef. I'll let the Captain know you're getting to work. She'll likely pop down here at some point." Moon turned, golden hair whipping around behind her.

She made her way back onto the deck, exchanging her quick and efficient words with the Captain.

"Moon dear, keep an eye on Lydia, will you? She seems to be rather excitable for the moment." Jack grinned. "I'll check on our new chef in the galley~"

Moon sighed, assuming command of the ship while her captain decided to have some fun. Jack was extremely whimsical in peacetime, and it showed. She cast the lines and ordered crewman to change their heading. They had gotten off course by three degrees. She glanced at Lydia warily, and held her sextant close.

Jack sashayed into the kitchen. "Ah, Crewman Itty, dear. I hope the galley is to your liking?" The captain not so subtly snatched pieces of food as the with was prepping.

Iteral shivers a little in joy when Moon referred to her as chef. She looks up at the ceiling for a brief moment, thinking back to times long passed. Or... not so long, if the clock's right, she's in the past somewhat. It's weird.

Jack entered after, when Iteral was in full cooking mode. Multiple pans were already in use, some covered, some not. Fish, veggies, everything she found, she used. Even the oven, or whatever looked the closest to one, was fired up and giving birth to what seems like bread. A euphony of cooking, grilling and cutting sounds filled the galley. She did not even look at Jack in the beginning, instead speaking in Italian. "Chiamami Iterale, te l'avevo detto! E sì, la cucina è fantastica!" She shouted, but more because she was conducting this symphony of gastronomy from the middle of it. She had no intent of speaking up against the Captain...

until they decided to snatch some food. She immediately raised the skillet in hand, waving it. She was still shouting in a foreign language but the tone was more threatening.

"Hey, hey, hey." She said, clutching the piece of fish she had pilfered from the skillet. "I'm hungry, and you're making no sense." Jack stole a piece of cheese, and some bread.

"Aw, and you're a decent chef too! This is great! I'm so glad the sky dumped you on this ship! I'll have to draft a contract so you can't get poached for some island regent..." She danced around Iteral's futile attempts to stop her. No one was lighter on their feet than Captain Jackery Soot.

Iteral huffs a little and, after letting her little native anger out a bit, she calms down enough to revert to basic English. "Sorry, sorry, I just haven't had this much fun cooking in so long! So many things from my childhood, the old fishes like papà used to bring from the sea. It's just so... aaah!" She could not put it in words, so the temporal chef instead makes an excited "mwaaaaah" sound. "But I cannot let you eat that. It is no worth of a capitano!" Despite the agility of Jackery, time cannot be outrun. So, after a short while, Iteral manages to get the bread and cheese by having the captain's arm in a headlock. Or rather, armlock.

But it only took five seconds, as Iteral released her arm and shows improvement:
The cheese was now melted on the bread, some spices were sprinkled on it and a piece of... well, Iteral thought it was parsley at least. It smelled like it. No idea what this world's variant of it was... Pass-ley?

"You're mean." Jack huffed, sulking at the fact that Iteral had caught her. But she grudgingly ate the improved snack.

"Holy [redacted], you're seriously going to need to sign something. I can't let that cooking end up in someone else's hands..." She was already plotting how to consolidate this power of food magic. Yet thievery was in Jack nature, and continued to steal and eat scraps, despite their semi-inferior quality.

Iteral shakes her head in disappointment. "You have not eaten my food but speak highly of me, how bad was your former cuciano then?" She laughs a little dryly and then points the rolling pin at Jack again. "I consider it, if you stop eating the scraps of my work. Either ask for a snack or wait until dinner!" She demanded, waving the pin around again and almost intending to throw it. "You are capitano of the ship, sure. But I reign over the kitchen, yes?"

"I want a snack AND my authority." She said. "Can't I have both?" Jack put a hand on her hip, giving Iteral her best Captainly glare, complete with a perfectly arched eyebrow.

"And MaryAnne was great, until someone offered her a job she couldn't refuse on land. The interim crewmen... Now they were disasterous at best."

Iteral was... unaffected. She has dealt with that goddess of a mother already, Captain Jack seemed kind of tame by comparison. Nevertheless, she gives in. Better to comply, that way maybe she can enjoy cooking for a while longer. "You got authority but in the kitchen, I reign for now. Wouldn't you agree?" She puts down the pin and raises one of the closed pans, letting out just a little bit of steam for the captain to smell.

Smoked gemini fish.

Jack couldn't hide her smile at the pleasant aroma, which did a fine job convincing her. "Fine. But only during prep hours. And I want snaaacks~"

She stole another piece of bread from the countertop with an impish grin, dancing out of the reach of the rolling pin.

Iteral nods and places the pan back down. "You are lucky I also used to have a young sister who also loved stealing from the counter." She looks around and opens the oven, revealing something. A hidden baking sheet underneath the main one! On it was another loaf of bread but that one looked different. That one was smaller, about the size of a dagger, had almonds inside and outside and had a scent of cinnamon. A quick move of the knife later and it was sliced into pieces, revealing a fluffy inner texture, more almonds and a bit of steam. She places the bread in a nearby bowl and hands it over to the Captain.

"Is that enough? A captain should not feast on scraps."

She stared at the piece of bread for a minute, before cramming it into her mouth. Miss Iteral clearly didn't understand the habits that came with humble beginnings, but she wasn't going to pass up free tasty breadstuffs.

"Delicious! I can't wait for lunch~" The Captain's bottomless stomach was legendary among her crew.

"Well, if you aren't busy, tell me about the ship and yourself. I like banter and stories while I cook." Finally, the witch with the iron apron went back to cooking, seasoning another pan and swirling it around. Despite the fish being dead and simmered to near heaven, the way she flips it in the pan makes the gemini fish reminiscient of that famous chinese book with the two fishes. She then thinks a little, putting her finger on her lips. She said something foreign again but her facial features said it all. Something was missing, to round everything up.

"Hmm." Jack thought for a moment. "I came from a dusty old island called Niotsuni. Orphaned young, struggled to find work by the time I was age five, finest pickpocket in the land, the usual. Then I almost died in the storm of the century, sucked into a whirlpool. Somehow I was alive at the end of the night, and found myself underwater. I learned I had oceanic powers, and was trained by the merrow of the area for a few years. Then, they cast me back to mainland, and told me I had to prove myself to rejoin their Skysaeian paradise. So I scraped together enough for a ship, filled it with promising youngsters, and set out for gold and glory."

"The classic "they exiled me and now I'll prove them wrong", eh? Well, judging by how you run this ship, I'm sure you'll reach that... Skysaeia I think you named it... in no time." Iteral replied, smiling a bit. She saw her fair share of witches, demigods and what have you not. And most of them have tear-ridden backstories that would quench your heart, so... having someone like Jackery, who wasn't "traumatized to hell" or something. It was refreshing. Almost... enjoyable.

The witch opens the oven again and tears out a piece of the actual bread on the top most sheet. Interesting, it was bread but... it squished like cotton. She tosses it to the captain in a high arc. "Good story. Here's your reward."

"Oh no, Iteral, dear. There's nothing classic about the Merrow. Any lander with powers like me, Moon, and half the rest of the crew may petition to become a Merrow. A little bit of sea magic later, and you have a tail, fins, and a pair of gills. For a lander to become part of their sacred inner circle, the Council of the Skysaeian Deep must verify a task of virtue, a task of nobility, and a task of uniquity. It's all very subjective. I could have remained with them if I had so chosen, yet I quest. And my predicament, well, it's common knowledge on the ship. Why, there are probably a thousand such questers on the high seas trying to parse the inner circle of the Merrow... their true society exists parallel to this one. Only the underwater gates lead to its heart. Only the Merrow Asilantis may enter the gates. Only the members of the inner circle may endure the grueling selection trials for that honor. Only those who have completed the three tasks will become members of the inner circle once their petition is accepted."

She leveled Iteral with an intense stare.

"I have Merrow ancestry. Most landers do. But I'm half-Merrow, meaning my OceanBlood is purer than most. It's practically my destiny," She said with a dramatic flourish. "But enough about me. Tell me abvout yourself!" Jack's stare turned into something curious.
It was never meant to be.

Lydia popped up next to moon, grinning.

"Woah, what are you doing? You know, this place is cool. Has anyone told you that you're really pretty? Are there sky whales? Is that a thing that exists?"

Lydia was firing off questions as soon as she thought of them.

"How does the whole skysea thing work? Are there like, sky fish?"
Is it
wickedness?

Or is it
weakness?

"I meant the concept rather than your situation but sure, I understand. At least you give me a rundown of the world, that's kind." Iteral chuckles and nods. "Good luck with your Merrow endeavors. As for me..." She checks a clock of hers real quick. Still on cooldown. "Well, I'm just a traveler from a far away place. Raised by adoptive parents until I was 17, then my real mom appeared and took me with her. Had some... mental issues due to her being the most detached mother ever," Iteral leans close to Jackery to whisper. ",though my dad was nice," She resumed at normal volume. "Mmmh, yeah. Got light and shadow powers during that time and learned horology." It was a very abridged version and she left out a lot of details. "Sorry, I am just... not as interesting as you I suppose."

"Horology... The study of time? Do you have time magic?" Jack paused. The most absurd question from that conclusion popped into her mind. "Ohmygosh, does that mean you can instantaneously make food?!?"

She had encountered a lot of otherworlders besides Iteral and Lydia. Her own navigator was one. The longer they all stayed in this world, the more that Skysaeia would balance out their powers. Jack supposed it was like that in all worlds; the ones with gods strengthened the mortals, the ones without tempered the gods. Or something like that.

===

Moon brushed by Lydia, angling her astrolabe to catch the sun. The girl had too much energy for life at sea. She was going to get burnt out and dehydrated if she kept flitting about like a demented pixie.

"I am making sure we remain on course," she said simply. "There's a whole alignment reasoning I could go into, but I'm fairly certain that was just your opener and not a real question. Yes, this place is cool. No, no one has ever said that to me, maybe because it's not true. Yes, there are both sky whales. They travel in pods and are extremely majestic. Some peoples have bonded with the sky whales and travel with them like zeppelin airships. There are other skyfish as well... The larger ones like to antagonize the seagulls, but they mostly only come out at night. They take refuge in the clouds during the day. That's why we need to be careful when passing under the fluffy ones." Moon gestured to the Crewmen in the crow's nest as she spoke.

"Skysaeia, not Skysea, is an integrated world. Aside from the airfish, there are undersea birds. Make of it what you will. The magic keeps everything in its place."

Iteral... nods but then looks away. "Yes. But I choose not to." She looks into her bag, a clock sticks out. "... those powers brought me nothing but trouble and pain. It is powerful... but taxing on the mind." The witch remembers how... difficult she was in her younger years. And that was put lightly. "... in these times, I prefer to enjoy time more than tampering with it."

"Trouble and pain, hmm? There's a story or two there..." Jack trailed off, allowing the chef to elaborate if she wanted. "Well, you have time enough at last here. There's not to much to kill you if you're careful, and my job is to make sure that you're careful. Danger is relative here."
