Ōmagatoki: Alice in Elysium (Game 3)

Well that was an abrubt change. She had gone from a seemingly lovestruck girl to a player. Paiyoon respected that immensely; too many newbies came into this game with feelings. The game was ruthless, and the players needed to adapt.
"Right, strategy. So Artemis did say this game is very similar to your world's 'mafia,' although I really wouldn't know... basically this time, the Yokai win by killing all the humans, and the humans win by becoming equal in number to the Yokai. All the passive players are Yokai this time. It's kind of confusing, but assuming we're on the same side, we're voting for who we think is a human." She grinned.
"The strategy for day one is really to decide who we think is suspicious... there's not enough information on the humans, but every vote we waste is a missed opportunity. Especially since the special Shogun role can only be voted out and not killed..." Paiyoon paused. Emma seemed sharp enough. "You follow?"

Her previous attitude was completely gone, the friendly glimmer in her eyes gone. It wasn't hard to figure out where Artemis had gotten that perfect poker face.
"If someone like Artemis got it, it'll be no problem for me."

Ouch. She wondered how Artemis would have reacted to Emma's burn.
Because like Paiyoon, she was as tough as nails. She found herself respecting the girl more and more. "Don't worry. This game... it's harder and infinitely more infuriating than you think. Even when you're right, something as stupid as the common cold could come and kill you. And Alice seem, er, more sadistic than the previous disembodied voice."
She looked around at the group that had not-so-subtly formed around them. "So who do you think the humans are?"

She glanced around. the cutesy charm from before, the act of a lovestruck fool was completely gone. She was acting more like Artemis now, logical and analytical.
"Observing the people first would be ideal. Then, we can make conclusions. But that one brown haired dude with glasses is giving off bad vibes. yeesh."
wickedness?
Or is it
weakness?

Paiyoon Ji
"Hmm, you mean this one?" She said, pointing to Yohan, who stood but a few feet away from them. "I can definitely see it. He gives off vibes similar to two other people I... don't care for..." Her mind strangely made a coonection between this newbie, Elehah, and Ayran. Their cosmic energy was similar.
"Personally, I think the quiet girl is suspicious," Paiyoon said conversationally. She gestured in Kotone's direction, which was made slightly harder by Suko's embrace. "But none of them are defending themselves, so I suppose we'll have to vote blind eventually. I hate voting blind." The last part, she muttered to herself angrily.
"For once in my three lifetimes, I'm going to wait a little longer to vote." This was not only logical for the moment, but also rooted in an irrational fear of Alice. Seriously, she was sadistic-looking. It almost made Paiyoon wish for the good old days of the disembodied voice... Almost. But not quite.

She glanced around, but didn't seem to find anyone suspicious. She turned her attention back to Paiyoon.
"Hey, i've been meaning to ask this for a bit, but why's that guy like... clinging onto you. What's up with that?"

weakness?

"Umm..." She blushed again. "Suko is... er... a little emotionally distressed right now? Not that they would admit it to anyone, because they're in denial. They knew Femi." Emma would have heard the announcement that Femi was dead and would somewhat understand. "We- we met last game, and became... friends? They thought I was dead too," Paiyoon said, whispering the last part.
It was sometimes hard to fathom that everyone else here had an entire life before The Game. Fate liked to play cruel jokes. Paiyoon herself had been snatched from the path of three suns that would have taken her to the afterworld. She hadn't even been permitted to keep her goblin form, as they, whoever they were, had deposited her soul into this strange humanoid shell. Although an extra foot and purple hair were kind of cool, she had to admit.
"But Suko is going to discuss how they're feeling so they can process emotions, right, Suko?" They needed to talk. Paiyoon was getting increasingly worried. She couldn't afford to be worried.

She shook her head and said quietly, "I think that the only mistake that can be made is if we fail to identify who is who... that's how we know who is suspicious and isn't..."
She thought for a second. "But if we misinterpret someone's ideas and actions, that could be bad too..." Kotone stopped talking. She could feel someone watching her, as if they were trying to find a reason to suspect her.
Chills ran down her spine as she realized her situation. They were stuck in a PTSD-giving world with scary people, including murderers and who-knows-what.
Looking over at Tetsuo, who was clearly nervous and scared, she couldn't help but feel just the same.

Ugh, it seemed like everyone knew each other.
This has got to be a joke.
Goreon pulls out her Samsung galaxy flip smartphone and types in a number
“Hello? Yes, Hi- I swear-“
Suddenly an invisible force pulls the phone out of her hands.
“Huh? What is this!?”
Goreon snorted.
She hated this.
She pointed at the girl in the cloak.
“Hey you! Do you know what in the h3ll is going on?!” Goreon asked.
Paiyoon Ji
Paiyoon pointedly turned away to hide her face. She did not like that self-satisfied smirk, the one that made it seem like Emma knew something she didn't. Because they really were just friends! Besides, Suko could never see her as more than that.
No one could ever like Paiyoon Ji like that... it was impossible! Unfathomable! And even if they did, (which they didn't), Paiyoon didn't get crushes. She was only blushing because of Emma's insinuations, that must be it.
She shifted her focus to the quiet girl and the boy who was talking to her. Kotone and Tetsuo... did they already know each other? That was a dangerous combination. Paiyoon narrowed her eyes, as if that would help her see if they were two of the stupid humans. (Spoiler alert, it didn't help at all).
And then another newbie, the one that had been screaming earlier, was shouting at her. "Yes, I know what's going on! You can't use a h*cking phone here, dummy! The Game is in between life and death: you can't contact anyone in either realm. We're stuck. We're ALL ALONE until we vote out all the humans. Got it?"
Paiyoon huffed angrily. Better the girl shouted at her than anyone else. But seriously, try learning some *manners.*

Life and death? Pfffft.
When has there ever been a situation like that.
Anyways Alice in Wonderland?
Those stuff were for babies.
All she needed to do was get out of here.
Paiyoon Ji
As if reading Goreon's mind, Paiyoon laughed. The girl was walking away, off into the darkness of Wonderland.
"Good luck, newbie. There's no way out... you think players haven't already tried to escape? I'm telling you: you're trapped here like the rest of us. If you're still in the land of the living, your only hope of returning is to win. If you're already dead... well, the denizens of fate can play games with your soul for however long they like."
They only asked her for help. They never listened to the important advice. Paiyoon really hoped that Alice wouldn't murder Goreon out of spite. There was no telling what their moderator was capable of.
Emma's last comment made Paiyoon slightly uncomfortable, but she couldn't put her finger on why. "Yeah, whatever..." she said with a sigh.

"There's not too much to tell, honestly. I was in another world, in another life. I was a powerful enchantress, and a goblin. I'm not sure which I'm more annoyed about, the fact that they made me humanoid, or the fact that they took my magic. I was a merchant for a while... selling items of my own creation in the goblin city. Eventually, I got a lovely quest letter, fought the Cult of the Black Sun, and earned my place in history. No big deal.
"Hmm... what else. My brother died when I was seven... it was by his own hand. From then on, I've always had a fascination with death. I died fairly young myself. As I followed the path of the three suns, what my culture believes is the path to the afterworld, I was, er, diverted here. But The Game is fun at times, so I chose to stay."
Paiyoon smiled briefly. "Any questions?"

Femi Davis [GHOST]
...why?
WHY?
How could Suko do such a thing? Why had he gone and trusted them? Why had he gone and loved them?
Why had he...
Why had he kissed them, that night?
Why had he asked if he could be their boyfriend?
...why... Why... Why?
When Suko lured him away with that note. When Suko locked him up in that room, leaving him screaming for help, as his body was being burned to smithereens...
As he was struggling to scratch out his killer's name... "Suko" onto the wall, with his nails...
As he had banged on the door, yelling and screaming and begging and pleading for them to come help, for them to come save them...
But no one came.
Suko... I loved you. Why did... You do that to me?
...
"Th-That... Was a m-mistake. You never trust a-anyone."
He hugged his arms closely to his chest.
But then, he saw something that made him pale.
Some girl, he didn't know who she was. She was...
She was near to Suko. She was... Touching them.
Blushing.
Tears stirred in his eyes.
"...w-was... Was I that easy to get over? Were- were you playing me, S-Suko?"
Of course.
He should have known.
It was all for a gag.
He was just Suko's little joke. Suko's little plaything. Suko's little boytoy.
Bullies.
People. Were. All. Just. Awful, awful, AWFUL bullies.
"I- I thought... I thought you were different."
...
"I thought I meant something to someone. I- I-"
...
"I thought you l-loved me, Suko."
...
But...
...
Wait.
How were they... Here?
Femi's eyes widened. If Suko was his killer, they would have been executed.
Could it be...
(Editor's note: Femi doesn't know about the fact the dead can be brought back in this Yōkai universe, even though he himself was brought back, in this case, he just doesn't assume Suko was executed and brought back.)
...could it be that... They hadn't killed him?
Femi wanted to hope that was true.
"B-But... If... They weren't playing me, what are... They doing with..."
...
"Fine! Screw it. I- I never needed you anyway. I-"
...
I needed you. I really needed you.
"...but you're there, a-and I'm here... And... I can't say a word. I- I can't even find out the truth..."
They had seemed devastated that he had died again.
...
If that was what they were devastated about.
Could just be an act.
...
It's like... I don't even know you, Suko. I thought... I honestly thought you never would have killed me. And now, I see you over there with... That girl, and...
...
"...I bet sh-she's... Something special, huh?"
Good for you.
Paiyoon Ji
Okay, that was weird. Artemis had done something similar, switching between moods at breakneck speeds... it was as if somehow, there was a switch in their brains that they could just set to any emotion. Were they... robots? Nah, their technological world wasn't really that advanced.
Still, the Femi problem worried her. Paiyoon didn't know how to feel about Suko, much less the phantoms that visited them. There wasn't much to do while they refused to answer her question, she could only wait. Her mind turned over strategy after strategy, thoughts on how to get Suko to talk mixed in with who to vote out first.
But Paiyoon Ji was tactical. While she was in this realm, The Game was not something that she could ignore. "Emma, what are the odds that you're a human?"
