She paused.

Kendo clearly wasn't understanding the value of providing both qualitataive and quantitative empirical evidence. It was like pulling teeth, this process. But still Jack persevered. She was known as the fixer for a reason, after all. While Kendo wasn't some broken toy, Jack could still help. She would help. She had to help. He was her friend. She quickly drafted a three-pronged plan of attack.

"First of all, I would like you to know that I would never backstab you." Two months worth of detention with Professor Kane was a testament to that. "But to go forward, I need to know how you feel about the people that have done this in the past. Have you... forgiven... them as well?"

She paused before barrelling on.

"Secondly, the teachers. They are indeed useless, or at least, most of them are. There's not much we can do there, but my plan may change that. Is it targeted because you are House Riparian? Working-class? Any other stereotype?"

Another pause.

"Thirdly, your family. If you would be amenable, we can draft a plan to maybe help them? Try to provide, er, economic stability?" This was the part that she wasn't sure how Kendo would react to. Everyone had varying levels of pride in regards to their family, (in her case, none whatsoever). She didn't want to accidentally offend Kendo.

"But back to tghe matter at hand. Easy target... those are two words that I wouldn't typically associate with you. You are one of the few people that could potentially kick my @$$ on the dueling court. What would make them think that?"

She was silent for a long while. It was her fault that he was tortured, it was her fault that they had hurt him, it was her fault, it was her fault, it was her fault...

Then she needed to make it right!

But Kendo wouldn't let her make it right, wouldn't let her teach them a lesson.

Then what could she do?

Think, Jack, think.

"Kendo, I'm sorry." She didn't quite know what to say. "I wish... I wish you had told me sooner. I..."

I would have tried to stop them. I would have made sure that they would never do it again. I would have made them regret it. I wouldn't have abandoned you. I wouldn't have let them define you.

"I'm sorry."

She stared into the abyss, alone with her thoughts. But then the ever-present logic kicked back in, and Jack was normal again.

"So how do you want to proceed?"

"Unacceptable." The word was out of her mouth before she realized it. "I mean, you can't do that. I'm not stupid, I can see your scar. I won't put you back in a position where... that... becomes a likelihood."

She raked a hand through her short black hair, standing and pacing. She was agitated.

"You're an eighth year now, hopefully they'll leave you alone a bit more. You're talented enough that any job you take post-Institute would put you in contact with them; their status to your intelligence. I could make some sort of covert announcement, but that would just call more attention to the problem. Out of the question, I won't reveal your secrets. Hmm, I could stage some sort of duel where you beat me, teach them to think twice. Or perhaps you stop holding back and actually try to beat me, that would achieve the same goals too. I could compromise my authority if I needed to, my plans can adapt to that. Or perhaps I start a crack-down on anti-bullying sentiment in general, that has been one of my goals for years now. Of course, it's hardly effective when my own best friend is continually subjected to the torture that I fought for so many others to be free of... You are right in one thing, the teachers are useless, and even if they noticed you in trouble, you are a working-class Riparian and a persona non grata, pardon the French. We need to take matters into our own hands, that much is clear. This can't keep happening."

She continued to pace, but stopped speaking to gauge his reaction.
