Once upon a time there was a girl and her name was ******. She was affable, intelligent, and precocious. It wasn't long until others recognized her intelligence and she skipped a grade. She was still far beyond the other students. But her new classmates were cruel. It took her six short months to realize they hated her, and fourteen significantly longer months to realize they were jealous. She coped through reading - she escaped into Dagobah, the Shire, the Land of Stories, and always raced through the halls of Hogwarts. It was also here that she started trading Pokemon cards. Her Reshiram EX was her pride. In real life, she transferred to a new school, a swanky private school, where she was the scholarship student. Her new classmates resented her intelligence because it was something their money couldn't buy for them. She was poor and still resented. And then a terrible incident happened, pushing her and her parents to the breaking point, and the family left the halls of the rich. She transferred to a third and final school where no one knew her. She didn't tell anyone that she skipped a grade. She only raised her hand every fourth question. And she blended in. Music became her safe haven; it was the only place that she could let her inner competitive side out. Every audition she aced gave her a new identity as the music nerd. She bided her time and became another face in the crowd of her AP classes. And then one day, she realized that the stories she was lived in weren't finished. There was another character that know one knew about hiding in the margins of every book. And her name was Catherine. Catherine Elysandre. Only ****** could bring Cath to life. So she did. She papered the walls of her room with sketches and timelines of Catherine's life, pouring bits of her soul into Cath's. Eventually, the lines blurred and she couldn't tell where ****** ended and Cath began.

This is my history. I will leave it here as a testament to my beginnings. It is/was the first piece of writing that I ever shared on this site. This forum space is basically for me to comment on happenings in my life, and have somewhere to... complain(?) about all my problems. It's kind of a time capsule perhaps.

While I have only told my closest friends how old I am, it's no secret that I'm a college student. So let me tell you a bit about this... place that I will spend the rest of the year at. So without further ado, I present to you:

COLLEGE WITH CATH!

My college is located in the American Northeast, meaning that each fall, the leaves turn into golden, scarlet, and crimson. For two months out of the year, I can almost pretend that I live in a magical corner of the world. The thick rolling mists from the river envelop the forests each morning, and if I time it right, I can see the sun burn off the fog after my first classes.

This school can be found at an elevation much higher than the surrounding areas. The campus is too high to be considered a hill, but too low to be a true mountain. Campus level is a good one hundred feet above the perimeter roads, nearly five hundred feet above the lands beyond. From a few vantage points, it feels like I'm going to college in the sky. Cool.

The college is small by nearly everyone's standards, and we are not well known for our nonexistent academic prowess. That's part of the reason why I'm here on a full scholarship... when I graduate in May, I'll have a two-year degree that I can take somewhere else.

Now don't get me wrong, this place isn't terrible. But it is 100% not the right fit for me. It's so close to my house that my parents decided to keep me home for an extra year to avoid an astronomical dorm fee that my scholarship doesn't cover. The people here are attending this college because they cannot get in/get enough money to go anywhere else. The school barely has a stable wifi connection, technology routinely needs help desk calls in every classroom, every gen-ed class I have to take is filled with people who would rather be somewhere else... it's not ideal.

These factors have literally put me in some of the most advanced classes the college has to offer in my first semester. Calculus III? Advanced Physics II? Anyone? But in these advanced classes, I have found my college is hiding a secretly amazing, renowned professorial staff. And they give so much work. So. Much. Work. Have you ever had to write a final paper, not a lab report, but a five page research paper for physics? Neither had I, until this year. It's due in three weeks, by the way.

So because I'm here, I decided to challenge myself by doing something that i had never done before. And everyone has told me a million times that I'll find my friends in clubs and activities. Yep, I'm talking about debate. The advisor, who I'll call Mx. Erudite, is literally the best human in the world; they treat us like we're adults on a college campus, but they also understand that age is just a number. I never truly knew what "in loco parentis" meant until I met this person. Mx. Erudite is the perfect combination of sarcastic fun, and enjoyable hard-work. their confidence has rubbed off on me because this is an adult I actually feel believes in me. And best of all, they've only known me for ten weeks. I will absolutely never regret joining speech and debate, and I really want to continue with it once I transfer.

While I'm on the topic of extracurriculars, let me also gripe about the music department: it's horrible. We needed five students to run the orchestra, and then we pull in community members to fill out the instrumentation. Well, we had I and four other students sign-up... and then one of them dropped out. Don't tell the campus authority that we're still attempting to run the class. The music is great and I personally and amazing at it... but we'll never be able to achieve the ambitious program. The rest of the musicians are just okay. Our three hour concert will be a disaster.

There is a silver lining though. I am the only student clarinetist, so I get to play with two community members. M and E are both about 60-70, and they are two of the sweetest people ever. And thankfully, unlike other sections, the clarinets all know our music. So once a week, I go to our rehearsal and sight-transpose music, because the band master won't print transposed parts (if you know the difficulty, then you know). So fun. Yay.

This college in a nutshell. I have so much more source material... my psychotic french-argentinian Chem teacher, my insane no-nonsense suit-wearing lab professor, my experience taking sociology with the stupidest class ever, the ordeal that is obtaining food on campus, the fact that my fellow engineering majors are all three to seven years older than me...

College is great. 10/10. Would recommend. But maybe find some school that you can live your best life.

See recently, I've gotten a lot of questions on who Catherine Elysandre is. Where did she come from, what was she written for, is she a self insert. And now there are different versions? Too many questions. So without further ado, I present to you:

THE ORIGIN OF CATH!

I have already made a differentiation in my previous entry of myself, ******, and Cath. (Yes, I have six letters in my name.) I've explained briefly that Cath was someone I had created, a character I had brought to life.

How?
Catherine Anne Elysandre was created around 2018 by the overactive imagination of a girl fed up with life. She was originally my first forray into character psychology, and I gave her a bit of depth that my previous writing never had. I threw 100,000 different situations at Catherine, or Cath, and explored how I wanted her to react to them. She was indeed originally a way for me to have a self insert into my favorite stories. Originally. It may be cliche, but she eventually took on a mind of her own.

Because then, once I moved past the mundane, I threw the ultimate challenge at Cath: other worlds. I dropped her into Oz, replacing Dorothy, and watched her speed run the peace found at the end of the plotline. I whisked her away to Neverland instead of Wendy, and was only minorly surprised when she became its Queen. Wonderland, Middle Earth, Narnia, and so many more. But my final challenge was to find her homeworld, the place in which she could exist alongside the main characters. The girl hidden in the margins.

And so, Catherine Elysandre became a nameless, faceless Ravenclaw in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I walked the tightrope of making her character flourish, while hiding her from the golden trio. She did many of the same things I would if I were whisked away to Hogwarts, but in her own way. That was when she completely lost the last of her self-insert qualities, because I realized that she was no longer… me.

Who?
Cath's origin is rather dark. Everything goes wrong for her, and similar to other characters, Hogwarts becomes an escape. Magic becomes the way out for her. She doesn't resent muggles... only her particular muggles.

"Catherine Elysandre is a half-blood witch born to Jon and Imelda Elysandre (neé Smith). Eventually after continued fury for the magical world, Imelda snaps her wand, and gives up magic. The two ban magic from their household. Jon’s distrust of magic and his alcoholism makes him hate Catherine, whereas her mother dislikes the reminder of everything magical Catherine is. From fear of physical abuse, Catherine retreats into herself, learning the art of being invisible in plain sight. The girl longs for when she turns 11 and can escape to Hogwarts. As a person, she is extremely intelligent and observant. One of her strongest assets is her perfect memory. While she earns perfect marks in muggle school, Catherine is shy and antisocial. She fears that at any moment, her parents may change their minds and forbid her from going to Hogwarts. This gives her an incredible drive to feverishly study years ahead of the material she learns in class. She speaks only when spoken to. While she understands the purpose of rules, she has a certain disregard for some of those that pertain to her."

Cath got her name from Captain Catherine Janeway and MI6 agent Catherine Hale. Anne was an ordinary enough name. While at first it was unremarkable, it had been given to queens, and represents her origins in the ordinary. Elysandre was a combination of Elysium and my love of the villains of Pokemon. I am a huge fan of most of the Teams… Galactic, Plasma, Flare, to name a few. I gave her the ingenuity and unscrupulousness of Lysander, imbuing her with a sense of chaos that was fun to work with when it manifested.

What?
Catherine, by definition, is a specter of ******. She's a character, but also so much more. She was the voice inside my head when I needed someone to talk to, the person I would imagine verbally destroying all the people I hated. I looked up to her, and respected the decisions she would make in each situation. I asked myself what would Cath do when I was confused. She became the standard I held myself to.

When I was bullied, I'd imagine her standing up for me in every way that I couldn't. I'd imagine that she was me, and would prank them later. It was how I survived the day to day loneliness. One important thing to note: Cath was by no means perfect, and that's what made her fun.

I created an entire universe, Elysandrian Hogwarts, and explained away everything that didn't fit with canon. I have maps and timelines, masterdocs and notebooks, all filled with Elysandrian lore. It was both an obsession and an escape, the secret I kept from everyone.

It continued through Covid, and I began to write, having 65 years of in-story material. I developed more HP OCs, and read the books over and over again, combing for loopholes. My record was finishing the entire series in four days over Christmas break.

While this may sound obsessive and weird, it was what kept me sane. I'm here today, aren't I? At this point, Cath is as ingrained in me as one of my ribs.

Where?
The short answer: everywhere. In my mind, on the page, hidden in the margins of books, traipsing through my dreams.

When?
Cath's story spans from her birth on June 27th, 1980, to her eventual death in August, 2045. In this universe, she started coming into existence in late 2018.

Why?
Because I was lonely and disillusioned. Because I was imperfect and exhausted from trying to be perfect. Because the world was cruel and I needed to control a universe of my own. Because I wanted to improve my characterization and writing. Because I needed a name people wouldn't recognize me as. Because I wanted freedom. Because, because, because.

We all have a Cath inside of us, another person waiting to be brought to life. Another soul, another character, another person. Cath is as much who I am as ******* is. It's that simple.

A random name generator gave me "Caethyrnna Elysium". It was… too good to pass up. Then Abyss called me Cath, and I simply rolled with it. She is the scientific version of Cath, the skeptical, curious person, with a little less introvertedness.

Cath of The Final Hour:
Sarcastic, antisocial, Slytherin, nerd. The b!tchy, fallen version of Cath. The sarcasm and spunk without the minimal interpersonal skills. She doesn't hide the distaste she feel for humanity at all.

Cath of Coffee Shop RP
The alternative altruistic version of Cath. She retains the intelligence, and is able to take charge of a situation. She still values friendships intensely, but is a lot less shy about it. She is worldly and knowledgeable, and still seeks to help people.

So I got an ask in a secret message a while ago asking what I looked like irl. So let's... go through it, I guess.

A DESCRIPTION OF CATH

Head
I have dark brown hair. It's medium length, halfway between curly and straight. My eyes are such a dark brown that the irises look black. I wear bright blue glasses that are actually kind of cool. They're too big for my face, and my tiny nose. I have a dozen ugly pimples scattered across my face at any given time; demented constellations that I hate. My large forehead is laughable.

Torso
I am extremely thin. I have petite proportions and small shoulders. In the summer, you can see the bump from a fractured clavicle that didn't heal properly. I'm extremely bony; my elbows will jab, and my chicken wings stick out.

Limbs
My hands are tiny, smaller than everyone I know. They can barely reach a piano octave. My wrists are skinny; I can fit my thumb and pointer finger around each one. I have an ugly, v-shaped scar on one of my knees. It just looks stupid, not cool. My feet are also super tiny: size six shoe, anyone? As a whole I am very short.

I try not to take up space. I hate sitting close to people I barely know. I sometimes want to close my eyes and let my OCs deal with social situations. I get nervous and hyper. I am extremely self-conscious of what I look like because I know I don't fit societal beauty norms. There are days when I think that not conforming is fine, heroic even. But no one spares me a second glance... ever. That's why I debate, I play music, I write. I'll make them look at me, and value me for my other skills. Grudgingly impressed with who I am. I try not to define myself by what other people think, but for me, it's inevitable. I have always been told that "I could have done better." I second-guess myself, and even if it was my best, it's no longer good enough. My appearance just becomes one more reminder of how imperfect I am deep down.

If you see me on the streets, say hi. If you yell "Cath," I'll turn and look. And if you know my real name... I- um- cool. Just don't post it anywhere.
