Niwa raised his hand, timidly. "Y..Y'know, if we're going with the- well, ahem- Ultimate Magician theory... Then he would have a motive. He did admit to the Ultimate Labs and..." he trailed off. He didn't think Hisoka, or anyone was really listening.
Was it that stupid? Probably. They'd gone over this a few times already and maybe Maji-something's innocence was proven. Ridiculous. He sighed internally.
"How the poison killed her," Hisoka repeated with relish. "How the poison killed her."
"If that's the biiiig mystery..." Suko tapped the shell of his ear. "Then what if it has something to do with the things we found? The like, y'know, poison stuff happening."
Hisoka frowned. "We're not getting anywhere with this."
"I thought it was good," Suko grouched. Niwa prayed he wasn't smiling. "Kids these days... no appreciation for their elders' wisdom." Niwa couldn't stop his giggle. Suko cast him a slightly pleased glance.

Keiki felt...oddly jealous. Why? They couldn't put their finger on it. Seeing Niwa laughing with that idiot Suko made them shiver.
Ugh.
It just didn't feel right.

Right. The killer wanted to burn the cupcake, right? The original, non-carbon monoxide theory.
Could there be an interconnection?
He gnawed on the inside of his cheek. Possibly. What if, the cupcake was-
Suko raised their hand. "I think Femi's going to pass out."

"It...it could've been a trap- y'know. Like outta one of those detective books. She could've dranken the poison...like-" Keiki shrugged. "I don't know...maybe ate it somehow? Or dranken it as well."
"Could've been disguised as some food or something-"

"Wait... what if Akihiro wanted to burn the cupcake? Activated Charcoal is used to remove toxins at hospitals, and burnt bread is sometimes used as an alternative. Would it be much of a stretch to say a cupcake could be used as a substitute?"

"Her face was all blue though," Suko pointed out. Something in their eyes... it seemed more clarified than before. "Wouldn't that be like, something strangulatory? Why would you bother making a cupcake if you have a few minutes left to live, and some killer to expose the identity of?"
Hisoka snorted. "Oh my god, we're the smartest dumbasses I've ever met."
Hisoka? Swearing? Niwa peered at him curiously. That seemed out of character enough to get his attention.
"The cupcake was what was poisoned. The killer didn't want us to know what poison would be used. It was literally used in the attempt to frame the Ultimate Magician. That was its sole purpose, and it's confused us this whole time, when we already knew every little string connected to it."

Niwa giggled, despite himself. Keiki just looked like such a lost puppy, dizzy after chasing its tail, but pleased to finally clutch a tuft of fur in its mouth. God, they're so stupid. Everyone was ridiculous today, gosh, heck it. He wanted to both laugh and cry right now.
"Don't you see?" Hisoka pressed. "It was the cupcake! They wanted to hide the evidence- that was the only reason to do it. They took a cupcake, poured some poison on it, and presto! She ate it!" A gleam of avarice went through his eyes. Niwa shivered unconsciously.
He didn't like Hisoka very much...
"But why would she eat it?" Niwa looked at Amano and gave a double take. He was crying. "Nagisa wouldn't- Nagisa didn't realize, but why would Akihiro eat something... that the killer prepared?"
"Perhaps she wouldn't have realized." Hisoka waved the question away. "The cupcake didn't necessarily smell strongly."
Smells! Say it! Say it now!
"Then it's the arsenic, right?"
Hisoka glanced at him.
"It can't be uh- the... Hydrogen thing, because Suzume said it smelled strongly, right? That was a hoax. Again."
Hisoka looked struck by lightning. "That means-"

She shook her head. No. She should be grateful the killer slipped up in such a way.
"But knowing the state of the poison... what does this tell us? Who could've gotten arsenic?"

Well, that'd be you. But something about that doesn't match with what we'd heard...
"Er- I hope you know what you're saying, Suzume..." Niwa tugged on his hair nervously.
"Suzume isn't the culprit. Think for one minute about Maji's poison. That was a strong-smelling one, right? Clearly the killer didn't understand its properties. None of the bottles of poison we found were the cause of her death. There had to be another one."
"Oh."
"Yet-" Hisoka hesitated. "I don't see how this will help us with the case." He breathed out sharply. That was weak. He shouldn't have said it. Quickly to cover, he said, "But perhaps, if the killer was so vehement on framing Maji, then there was a reason."
"Maji... he keeps calling him Maji..." Suko, of course. Hisoka didn't like the implications of that. Ridiculous. He was only having difficulty with the name.
"Possibly-" Hisoka paused. "The cupcake... how was the poison applied to it? How would it have been applied so Akihiro wouldn't suspect anything?" That felt like a lead. Somehow. Surely even cyanide had a strong enough smell- or at least there'd be something odd about a clear, almond-smelling liquid being poured on a cupcake...

"Mm...the icing-? No-" Keiki paused. "Aha! The- the uh...filling perhaps?"
"...maybe?"
"Please say I'm right." They whispered to themselves.

Third Person POV
"The filling?" Hisoka squinted at them. It was a long, awkward moment. And then understanding sparked in his eyes. "Yes. That makes sense- It must've been baked into the center of the cupcake. Or it would've been smelled. No matter how sweet it was." He clicked his tongue. "Cold. Calculated down to that."
"Does that mean the killer left twice, then?"
Hisoka glanced at Niwa. For once, Niwa stood up straighter. "The killer had to leave twice, right? To make the cupcake, and then to give it to her- or at least take it out."
"Ah-!" Hisoka blinked. "That would make sense. Yes, I suppose it would." He looked vaguely disgruntled. "Did anyone see someone leave a suspicious amount of times?"
"We weren't always paying attention to one another," Amano said softly. "But... it might narrow the range down. If people have the right alibis." He was addressing them all- not Hisoka individually. Asking for the killer to come forward?
That was so much like him that it nearly made Niwa's heart twist.
"That would clear me, I suppose." Hisoka pressed his lips together. "And everyone who attended the motives."

"That clears you guys then.." Keiki whispered.
They didn't have a solid alibi. They were panicking. What if Hisoka suspected them-? Then what?
Just breathe.
Keiki closed their eyes, trying to calm themselves.

Suzume Fujimori’s POV
Megami had sat by her, so her friend would’ve known of her innocence. “I only left the room once I heard the announcement that a body had been found, and I searched different rooms in the building until I found the kitchen, and, by extension… came to see the victim, Akihiro’s body, like most of you all did.”
She pressed her index and middle finger against the rim of her glasses, with narrowed eyes in deep thought. “So… the arsenic must’ve been baked into the cupcake? But who would’ve had the time to cook the cupcake? And following this theory, are we implying that she ingested the poison, and then the killer attempted to burn the pastry-turned-murder-weapon to remove all traces of the weapon?” she queried.
“I know I might’ve been able to find the arsenic, as an Ultimate Scientist would most likely have this within their Ultimate Lab. But I didn’t leave the meeting the entire time.” She crossed her fingers.
Suzume noticed how broken Keiki had looked this entire time. What a nervous mess… was it because they were the killer? Of course, that couldn’t have been the only reason. They could very well be innocent. She had to congratulate them on reasoning it might’ve been the cupcake’s filling.
“Keiki, that was clever on your part to deduce what part of the cupcake the poison must’ve been put in. But, there’s something that’s been bothering me, the matter of alibis. Where were you? What were you doing?”

Third Person POV
"That's true!" Niwa jumped to their defense. "I was outside the changing room the entire time. I would've noticed if they left at any given moment. They're innocent. They've gotta be."
"All the time?" Hisoka questioned. "You didn't leave?"
Niwa bit his lip. "Not long enough for Keiki to realize and leave in any aspect." And yet... "And besides, I left before them the second time. And I doubt they can cook very well. Their nails still look perfect." Niwa nodded to them.
Hisoka and Suko simultaneously peered at Keiki's fantastic nails. "Hot damn," Suko remarked.
"Hm. Did they not have nail polish in their bag?"
"They swam, remember? It would've washed off, even if that were the case."
"I see."

Suzume Fujimori’s POV
She shook her head. “I doubt this is of any relevance, but… about when we poured the bags out, it’s definitely a possibility that when we did that, it was of no real help, because the killer could’ve easily disposed of any evidence elsewhere. But… anyway.”
She slowly pored over the information in her mind. “Would anyone here have any motive to kill Akihiro that could’ve been known to us? Why would someone have done this?”
Oh, this was hopeless. Somehow, the pieces refused to fit together in her mind.
“Keiki, I’m not doubting you, but do you have anyone else to vouch for you besides Niwa? I know that, like you, I probably only have my friend Megami to vouch for me. But, if no one else saw you there, you could be working together as accomplices. And… I’m not saying it’s not a possibility that I might’ve done it as well.”
Kowai Kurai’s POV
Kowai sighed and shook her head. “You’re no fun! Have we heard everyone’s alibis yet?”
