-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

She looked at him for a moment, letting out an annoyed sigh. "Oh shut up."

Her eyes landed on his neck, then his fingers, and she raised an eyebrow.

"There's not really much to help" my ass...

Mei had already said something about it, and she wasn't going to back down. Besides, it would help her get her mind off...

Things.

Mei had mended the many wounds she had gotten in the past by herself, it calmed her for some reason. She learned from a young age to do it, after she started getting scratches and bruises when she woke up. Mei didn't want her parents to see that her nightmares were real, and they came out from under the bed at night to hurt her.

She knew they didn't like when she had nightmares.

Ice to her skin felt warm, welcoming even. The feeling of ointment was just like lotion to her and the stickiness of band-aids was familiar. She learned how to stitch her wounds when she fell onto rocks, when she tried to cook and cut herself a few times.

When the nightmares would come out from under the bed to hurt her.

She liked treating her wounds, it was just second nature to her.

Mei never healed anyone else's wounds though. Nightmares couldn't help anyone.

She only made more nightmares.

Spread it like a disease, and no one could escape from it.

Once they got too close to her, they were infected.

And then they died.

. . .

Briefly, just one moment flashed before her eyes. It was the guillotine, and below it, was a head.

A head of a man.

She knew that man, he was a desperate man, he was a good man. He just lived a nightmare.

And that's why he wanted to be infected.

Infected with the disease Mei had, the one she wanted to spread so badly.

And in that moment she wished she had a cure. A cure for the disease she gave.

But his head was on the floor now. He had lost the gamble.

The gamble for his life.

Mei promised to give the man 2 million dollars if he won, and even tried to put her own life on the line. But the man didn't want that. He only wanted to be free. So he took the bet, and he lost.

He almost won, too.

Even for a moment, even just for a second, she felt bad for one of the people she infected. She put on a smile that day, laughed as his kind eyes stared back at her as the blade gleamed above him, waiting to be lowered onto his skin.

But that night, she went home alone. She went home without a smile on her face, a laugh in her voice, and a gleam of excitement in her eyes.

She later went to his family in secret, giving them the freedom that man begged for.

He had a daughter, a daughter that looked at her with a kind smile and happiness in her eyes. His wife was kind too, she had the same eyes as that man.

She continued to live her life long after that, going about her gambles with a haunting laughter that always echoed in the room, that excitement always with her.

She didn't change her ways after that, she found too much enjoyment in doing what she did.

But often she would think about that man, his wife, his daughter, the family that wanted freedom.

They got their freedom, they got a nice house, they gave their daughter the life she deserved. The wife went back to school too, she worked to become someone important.

They did it without their father though. They did it without their husband.

But they still lived.

They lived the plague that Mei brought.

And maybe... Just maybe...

They could too.

. . .

Oh right, Idris.

Any small wound could lead to infection, if it wasn't taken care of properly. And sure, she didn't doubt that Idris knew how to take care of himself (and it probably wasn't that big of a deal anyways), she just wanted something to do. She wanted to help.

And she wasn't backing down.

Mei sighed as she continued to look at Idris with her eyebrow raised, at least, until he opened the door wider.

He obviously didn't want Lucian to follow, which was... odd, but she understood. Lucian didn't even stick around long enough for it to be a problem anyways. Oh well, guess they'd be alone.

In his room.

Umm...

Eh whatever, she didn't care. She'd only make sure Idris was ok and didn't have a knife in his hands, then... Well, she didn't know what she'd do after that. She could... Go back to her dorm or something, walk around the school...

Make everyone and their little secrets suffer even more.

Those options didn't seem very appealing right now, well, maybe the last one did but she wasn't exactly in the mood.

Speaking of knives...

She adjusted her shirt a little bit, noticing that it wasn't tucked into her shorts all the way, and she adjusted her jacket too.

Her eyes looked back at Lucian for one last time, tilting her head slightly as she squinted a little bit, her expression hardening.

Obviously there was something wrong with him, and she couldn't exactly place her finger on it. Normally she wouldn't care, or really be this concerned, but there was something about Lucian that-

Oh.

She saw it now.

Those words he said, the way he acted...

The pieces all fell into place.

A therapist, one who was so deep into their pit of sorrows, desperately needed therapy.

How ironic.

. . .

Mei sighed and walked into Idris's room, giving him yet another raised eyebrow as she entered.

She wanted to make a joke about how strange the situation was, but...

Not the time, Mei, not the time.

This time, she actually refrained from saying anything. Maybe it's because she learned her lesson, or maybe it was because it was at her own expense as well.

Who knows.

Well, Mei was pretty much back to her regular mood by now, and she really didn't want to ruin it. She didn't want to put that wall down again, it was too risky. Just... Have a little chat, help a little bit, then do nothing else. No deep conversations, no anything.

Besides, she hated feeling vulnerable. It was gross.

"...So uh..." She started, setting down the first aid kit before turning around to look back at Idris.

"First, just uh... Clean yourself off, I guess..." She pointed to the bathroom with her thumb, not once looking back to see if it was actually there. She just assumed it was, since that's where hers was in her room. She had her other hand shoved in her pocket, and her expression seemed dull by this point, nonchalant almost.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Akari walked out of the room and walked in silence, his eyes heavy and his face was null and void of any emotion.

Ok except maybe tiredness.

He sighed as he continued walking, at least, until he heard something behind him. He had already turned the corner, but he could still hear. He could hear that detective he met in the hallway, the one who insulted him, and Akari could hear the familiar sound of a certain black and white play toy.

Kubo had something going on with him, and then that bear showed up. Akari heard all of it. His ears, his cursed, sensitive ears could hear it all. He normally hated eavesdropping and snooping around, but when that damn bear was involved...

Akari figured that he could do it. Just this once.

He heard the sound of a glass making a faint TINK as it fell into someone's hands, probably Kubo's. Whatever the hell Monokuma was rambling on about was interesting too...

What did he mean by "best friend"? Sure, it could just be Monokuma toying with the detective, but Akari had the strange suspicion it was something else, something more personal.

Or he was just overthinking, and none of that meant anything. Who knows.

Akari didn't turn around to look at the two, knowing his presence would be made obvious if he did so. Not only that, he already felt bad for snooping around things he shouldn't. He didn't need to know anymore.

Akari simply took a careful step forward and kept walking, barely hearing Lucian's voice as he kept walking.

Just... Keep walking...

Ignore the gunshots, 'Ri, you'll get used to 'em.

Just keep walkin', we'll be there soon.

Just keep marching, 'Ri, this will all be over soon.

He sighed as he shook that memory out of his head, ever so briefly did his eyes deceive him once again as he was looking down at the floor.

He saw the ruined grass and mud beneath him, speckles and puddles of red littered here and there. Bodies... So many severed limbs, lifeless eyes, absolute horror thrown around everywhere... He saw himself in those clothes, the clothes he hated so much. His ears didn't dare fabricate the memory, but his eyes did. Even just for a second.

And before he knew it, he was in the cafeteria. Huh, guess he was a little hungry.

Well... Guess he could make something to eat.

He walked into the kitchen only to see...

People. Ah great... People.

Just what he needed right now.

Akari stared at them for a second or two before looking away and heading to the opposite side of the massive room, grabbing the materials he needed for one of the only things he knew how to make.

Guacamole.

He loved that stuff, especially the way his dad made it. His mom... Well, she knew the recipe first, but his dad learned, and he taught Akari, since he loved it so much.

He certainly wasn't the best at it, but he could make it. That was good enough for him.

Darcy Harper's POV

...a coward. That was... what Darcy was, wasn't it?

Wasn't... everyone here, running from something, when he thought about it?

Everyone was. And then they looked at Sawyer, shook their heads, and said...

"There must be something wrong with them."

But... Darcy realized the truth. There wasn't anything wrong with Sawyer, really, was there?...

...was there?

He wasn't sure anymore. But he knew one thing for sure. Saying there was something wrong with them, was an observation most likely born from envy. A feeling Darcy knew very well.

Everyone here was in some kind of denial. Everyone here was running away from something.

But none of them could run as fast as Sawyer could.

He reflected upon this, as he opened up a soup can, and poured it into a pot.

...Darcy could do better than this, of course he could. But, he wasn't in the mood right now.

He wasn't so sure he was in the mood for anything.

Idris Kallikrates

Idris nodded quietly.

He shuffled to the bathroom, and stared at himself in the mirror.

As a kid, Idris always had a fear of mirrors, and growing up with a bunch of issues about his appearance, due to his family and school, he never really took time to actually see what he looked like.

He regretted it.

His neck was covered with ugly-looking scratches caked with dried blood.

Idris winced as he dabbed the cuts with a damp cloth.

Drops of blood fell into the sink.

He rubbed his eyes quickly, hiding the tears that threatened to spill.

He walked out of the bathroom.

"You have any bandages?"

Sawyer Laurens's POV

Sawyer was switching between Roblox idle animations in real life (this is not a self-insert thing I'm doing I swear), and then spotted!! A HUMAN!! Someone was at the stove with them, cooking something!

A potential new friend!!

A friend who--

Who-

"Hiiii!! Have we met? If we have, I might forgot! Hahahahahaha! I'm Sawyer Laurens, the Ultimate Loremaster! What's your name, new friend?" They quickly grabbed and shook Akari's hand before Darcy could stop them.

Darcy looked like he wanted to give Sawyer a serious etiquette lecture. "Whatcha cooking there? It's great to see a fellow Ultimate student!! What's your talent? I bet it's really cool!"

As Sawyer's eyes sparkled, the truth lingered behind them. Those shadows that you would tell yourself weren't there. And then they'd sneak behind you, and suffocate you. But, you'd just smile anyway! Nothing was wrong.

Everything was fine.

Darcy Harper's POV

Who was this again? Either Darcy's stupid roleplayer was forgetful as hell and they had met before, or they hadn't. But Darcy had seen Akari before. He'd noticed that he seemed... very unstable. Very... "not okay".

He self-consciously tugged at his ponytail, suddenly nervous about how people might react to his new appearance. "Um, heyyy! I'm Darcy Harper, the Ultimate Chocolatier. Have we met before?"

Sawyer had suddenly begun chattering about how Jevil is probably not actually crazy and might be right about everything he was saying. Darcy sighed and facepalmed. He loved Sawyer, but could they just be quiet for one moment, sometimes?

Mei waited patiently for Idris as he was in the other room, unsure what to do in terms of occupying herself as she waited. She leaned up against the wall and crossed her arms, tapping her foot rhythmically.

Mei... Wasn't exactly a patient person. Waiting was just pure agony.

Especially when...

Her eyes turned to Idris when he walked back into the room, asking for bandages or something. She looked at the wrap she didn't set down with the first-aid kit.

A few moments longer than she wanted to.

A used wrap of bandages... Whatever could've happened to the rest? The cut was messy... The cut used to separate the used bandage and the roll was messy. It wasn't straight, it was crooked and wavy.

Just like...

She looked up at Idris and handed threw him the wrap, not really caring if he caught it or not, then opened the translucent white box and grabbed the box of the oddly colorful band-aids...

Green, purple, blue, orange, so many colors...

Mei preferred the peach-colored ones, honestly.

She threw that box at him too, her expression seemed distant and blank. She would've had a grin or something, try and lighten up the mood, but not even she could do that right now.

Her chest was still heavy, her stomach still churned, and her throat was still dry.

Mei pulled her hand back to her side and adjusted her shorts a bit, slightly tugging it down.

Don't think about it, Mei.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

For only a few seconds, Akari was able to go unnoticed, but then...

He heard a voice.

At first, he kept his head low as he carried the ingredients to a free countertop, but the voice kept talking.

"Hiiii!! Have we met? If we have, I might forgot! Hahahahahaha!"

That voice sounded... Familiar. Except...

When he looked up, he saw a face that didn't match the voice. It was that energetic kid, one who was oblivious to everything.

The voice he heard came a face he never thought he'd hear from.

Smooth skin, big, beautiful blue eyes, soft golden hair...

She came up to Akari one day, sounding exactly like the voice that spoke just now.

"I'm Sawyer Laurens, the Ultimate Loremaster! What's your name, new friend?"

No, her name was... It was Aerith, and she was...

She was just a normal girl, she wasn't the Ultimate Loremaster.

That was the kid right in front of him.

He used his free hand to reach to the back of his neck, rubbing it nervously as he looked slightly away from Sawyer's indigo eyes, but still looking at him.

"I'm, uh..." He started, finding it hard to speak. "I'm Akari, and everyone calls me the Ultimate Engineer, I guess..." He said quietly, his eyes wandering to the floor as his body tensed up even more.

He didn't think of himself as a "fellow ultimate", he was just... A nobody, really. Anyone could do what he did, and they would've been more well-known for it too. He never made his work public, people just found him and they became just regular clients.

Oh god, another voice.

He was so distracted by just these two people that he didn't even remember to answer Sawyer's other question, about what he was cooking meth.

Darcy... He saw he- no, him a few times, right? But... They looked a little different.

Haircut, maybe? They changed their clothes too...

Oh well, he wasn't going to question it.

"N-no... I don't think we have..."

come on man, speak up, no one can hear you like that 🙄

Kubo Atsushi

"Sit with me," Kubo echoed blankly. "You want to sit with me. On the floor." He eyed Lucian for a long moment. "Fine. Do what you want. I don't care. I'm doing great, with or without you."

Not like I can stop you, if you want to take up residence on this dusty-ass floor. Honestly, a fast-food kitchen run by underpaid teenage workers would be more clean.

Kubo sniffed internally.

Monokuma better prepare some 80/h paychecks if he wants a workforce.

Kaoru Kajiwara (GHOST)

The door banged open. "I knew it!" Rumia breathed. "Ghosts! I get to eat you once more!" She grinned, exposing bloody fangs.

Horatia and Kaoru exchanged a look of grim understanding, then both fled for the door.

Niwa Atsushi

Kowai looked up as he entered. Niwa hovered in the doorway, half regretting his life choices. But the vulnerable look in her eyes made him stay.

The hero... would comfort her, right?

And so he kneeled down and offered her his hand.

She glared for a second, then swatted it away. "Don't touch me," she mumbled. She wiped her tears, bundling up her legs and hugging them to her chest. "I didn't ask for you to come back. You're just... you're just a liar."

"Heroes don't lie," Niwa said honestly.

"A hero?" Kowai blinked. "What's... that gotta do with anything?"

"I'm the hero," Niwa told her. "And heroes don't lie. They help people- they save people."

"You're here to save me? But- I don't need saving. I'm okay, see?"

Kowai opened up her hands. Then she grimaced, and he caught a glimpse of red on her hands.

"You're bleeding," he gasped. "Did you fall?" He glanced at the knife which had fallen to the wayside She must've hurt herself on it. "Here, lemme help. I'll get bandages, okay?"

He nodded in thanks.

Idris slowly bandaged his arms, and placed band-aids on his sore neck. Then he sighed.

"I'm gonna- go to the bathroom. Cuts on my back." He lied, and walked away slowly.

He didn't lie, Idris did have cuts, but he wasn't going for that.

He slid down the side of the wall in the bathroom, hands shaking.

He couldn't cry, not here, not now, not ever.

The voices spat and hissed in his ear. Only he could hear them.

Lucian Arbred's POV

"I've been ghosting, I've been ghosting along
Ghost in the world, ghost with no home
I remember, I remember the days
When I'd make you oh-so afraid
And this is why I have decided
To leave your house and home un-haunted
You don't need poltergeists for sidekicks
You don't need treats
And you don't need tricks
You don't need treats
You don't need tricks
You don't need no Halloween
You don't need treats
You don't need tricks
And you don't need me"

Lucian's heart thudded at the sound of Kubo's voice. And... him eyeing him... He inhaled quietly, and sat down next to him.

He wasn't quite sure what to say to him. He put his knees up to his chest.

He grimaced. "I'm doing great, with or without you."

Of course, he was. Everyone was...

Maybe they'd even be better without him.

He'd come here with the intention of eating something, but he wasn't so sure he cared about that anymore.

Lucian wanted to cry, but he felt too tired to cry. And he didn't want to cry. Not in front of Kubo, not in front of anyone. Just...
what was with him here? This wasn't that much to handle. Anyone could handle it...

Finally, he spoke.

"I... wanted to make sure you were- okay, Kubo." He twisted a lock of his hair around his finger. "...earlier, you seemed upset and I- I didn't- like seeing you like that. You don't... have to tell me anything, if you don't want to. I wouldn't blame you if you don't like or trust me."

He moved his scarf up, tempted to move it overtop his whole face so he could cry in peace.

...

Kubo didn't need him. No one did. So why was he here?

Darcy Harper's POV

Darcy's face reddened from embarrassment. Then, Sawyer whispered to him. "Is it... okay if I tell him?"

Darcy nodded. "...It's- okay, yeah."

Sawyer nodded back. "Oh! Yeah! Darcy over here, is the best guy friend someone ever had. He always has been, but he didn't realize it till today!"

"Yep. Yep I am. Haha." Darcy could almost see Mom's disapproving glare. She'd kill me. She'd literally kill me.

...if she wouldn't, for what had happened. Had she known?

"But, anyway! It's great to meet you, Akari!" Sawyer exclaimed. "Ultimate Engineer? Cool! I'd love to see your work! You do look like the kind of person who fixes things!" They beamed brightly at him.

"Yeah, it is really great to meet you," Darcy said awkwardly. "What are you making?"

He wanted to apologize that Sawyer might be a little too overwhelming, but, he didn't want to be rude.

He'd have to talk to them about that later.

"So... this sure is, a crazy thing, isn't it? I can't believe that... two people have died." He could almost see Kaoru's corpse flickering in his vision.

God... why didn't you spare her? What did she do that was so wrong?

Then again... who am I to talk? God probably hates me.

"Yeeeep! It's a crazy dream, isn't it?" Sawyer remarked. "I'm really curious what'll happen next..."

Sawyer, as bright as the sun. And if you stared at them too long, you'd find yourself blinded.

But you'd just wish you had that ability... to stare at the sun, and not become blinded.

To indulge in the light of life, to be happy, no matter what happened.

I remember when you danced in the rain, no matter who was watching...

Sawyer Laurens's POV

"Always, no sometimes, think it's me
But you know I know when it's a dream
I think I know, I mean a... yes
But it's all wrong
That is, I think I disagree"

Yeah, Darcy. People had died. But not like, actually.

It's just a dream, or a simulation of some sort.

So why was he so... upset?

Wait, was anyone dead?

...no, no one was dead.

You'd see that woman you loved, and watch her fade away. Glitching into nothing.

Was she ever real, or did you grow ever so attached to the concept?

What an interesting imagined concept. How truly remarkable.

Maybe Darcy was imagining things were bad. Or-- rather, the dream-projected-image of Darcy was imagining things were bad. Wow... this got convoluted, didn't it? How truly... perplexing.

Kubo blinked. Oh. Looks like Lucian had a bit to say. Guess he was the Ultimate Therapist for a reason. He considered him for a second.

Maybe he's not all that bad, he thought. If he'll approach me like this. Though I should be careful, he internally grimaced. That when he puts his arms around me, I don't find a knife between his fingers and my ribcage.

"Come on, then," he said. "Sit. We can 'talk.' Say," he added on an afterthought. "You don't happen to be religious, do you?"

Kaoru Kajiwara (GHOST)

Kaoru and Horatia fled through the halls, ignoring the cackling of the creature behind them. "Escape to the cafeteria!" Kaoru screeched. "We can repel her with the leeks!"

She slammed into Horatia's back, and momentarily rolled. She seized Horatia by the shoulders and tried to right herself. "Hey! What was that for?" Rumia's cackling grew closer. "Agh, I don't have time for this. Keep moving!" She shoved Horatia forward, but she didn't move. Like a brick wall.

"My body. Were the leeks really necessary?"

"I had to frame my only friend here somehow, right?" she asked, a little annoyed.

Niwa Atsushi

Kowai gave a tiny, imperceptible nod. "If you're a hero..." she whispered. "Save us."

"I will," Niwa said immediately. He had no idea who 'us' was- but he'd always follow through on his promises. "Just wait until I get back, 'kay?"

He couldn't shake the sensation that she watched him leave. He didn't have another knife driven into the door behind him though, so he wasn't too bothered.

That day, Kowai Kurai's kindling sparked. One day, it would blossom into an enormous wildfire, burning out even the tiniest creature's little nests, pouring smoke up the hollows of trees, and emerging into the sky- something deadly and catastrophic and monstrous.

But for now, she was a half-dead little girl, and Niwa had decided that he would be her hero.

Lucian Arbred's POV

Lucian fiddled with his scarf and nodded. "...well... no. Not particularly. I've... heard things. Lots of things." He paused.

"Some people... say they think there's a god. Or gods. Some people believe in fate, others believe in reincarnation... spirits, ghosts, zombies... An afterlife. There are many different points of view I've heard. But, to be honest, Kubo, I don't believe in any of these things, one way or the other. Maybe we all die at the end, and there are no spirits or souls. Nothing left of us. Or maybe that is the case. Or maybe we become ghosts. Or maybe, we're given another chance at life in another form. I don't know."

He looked into Kubo's eyes, his heart fluttering as he did so. "...so... Yes. It may not sound all that exciting. But... I don't believe one way or the other. Not that there's something, or that there's nothing. I feel like either could be true, really. ...I like researching Greek mythology, and astrology. However, I'm uncertain if there is any truth to it or not. I guess I'm just... in the middle. Wh-What- do you believe, Kubo? If you're... Okay with answering that. I've never told anyone... What I believe before... And I understand if... You're uncomfortable."

He couldn't help but wonder, where Kaoru was now. Was she just... Gone? Was she reincarnated? Was she out there, in some afterlife or other? He'd never know...

He supposed ghosts... Might exist, I mean, wasn't that Miyako's talent? Unless... She lied.

But he couldn't help but wonder... Why had Kubo asked him that?

Ask me to spill my heart out to you... For you, I'll do it in a heartbeat. But I doubt I'll ever tell you these two truths.

A metaphorical locket, tucked away, nice and safe, like his mother's scarf around his neck.

One truth it held, was that Kubo had his heart.

And the other... Was one he never wanted to face.

Mei gave a simple shrug, but no reply at first. It was really awkward right now, and Mei didn't know what to do. Idris was barely even talking, and neither was she, but still...

Should she be talking? She... She didn't want to say anything wrong.

What if it only made things worse?

Goddammit she wasn't used to being nice and considerate to people, she liked to make them feel like s**t!

"Don't get attached," huh... Well this was funny, wasn't it?

As Idris turned to walk away, Mei spoke up. She had a feeling something was off, but didn't want to bring it up.

But... what would happen if she did?

Would it make it worse... Or make it better?

Cuts on his back, huh...

"Are you sure you don't need he-" She started, but Idris already left. How the hell was he gonna do that alone?

It was a pain in the ass to cover up wounds on someone's back with their own hands, she knew. Her arms always hurt afterward.

Well, she wasn't going to push. Mei could see a vague outline of the type of person he was. Besides, if someone were to somehow walk into the bathroom while she was treating the supposed cuts... Oh god she didn't want to go through that headache.

...Odd that she jumped to that first, but alright. Understandable, really, she always thought of the worst possible outcomes.

But Mei couldn't help but wonder.

There was something off.

And all she could do was wait in silence, hoping he wasn't lying. She already suspected it, but she tried to be optimistic.

. . .

Boredom, once again. A deafening silence filled the room and it was painful to sit in. She sighed and started tapping her feet again, a faint feeling coming back every time her foot rose and fell.

Mei stopped for a moment and tugged down her shorts again, her legs now feeling really cold and vulnerable. God... Where was some good pants when you needed them?

Akari continued looking at the ground, rubbing the back of his neck still. His body was so tense, he could almost be a statue at this point. His breathing was also slightly shaky, and if you could see his eyes, they'd be darting around wildly at the floor.

"But, anyway! It's great to meet you, Akari! Ultimate Engineer? Cool! I'd love to see your work! You do look like the kind of person who fixes things!"

"U-uh huh... yeah..." He responded simply, his voice seemed to be crawling back into his throat. Sure was a pleasure to meet him, huh... The awkward, barely-able-to-speak mess of a person who couldn't even talk right, guess it sure was...

"Yeah, it is really great to meet you. What are you making?"

Akari took a deep breath as he tried to calm his nerves, trying to find a way to speak properly.

"I- uh... Food..."

Wow. Great going Akari. Sure wasn't obvious enough, was it.

God he felt so stupid, and somehow, the tension in his body only got higher and higher. He only found it harder and harder to speak.

Before he could even correct himself, Darcy spoke up again. He... He said something that Akari didn't even see coming, it was completely out of nowhere. He flinched slightly at those words, but it was barely enough to be noticeable.

And soon there will be more.

"Y-yeah..." Was all he could say, before looking up slightly so he could see Sawyer.

They were really that naïve, huh? Still oblivious to everything? Akari wished he could have that optimism, but then again...

It seemed to be deadly, especially right now.

Well... He wasn't going to say anything about it, he'd just look in silence.

"Crazy dream, huh..." He said at last, his raspy and unpleasant voice barely above a whisper.

He groaned. He couldn't stay hidden in the bathroom forever.

He had to get out someday....unfortunately.

Idris got up reluctantly, and exited the bathroom.

"All done-" He lied.

He froze suddenly.

Idris was so stupid. He was going to patch up the cuts then have a crisis.

So blood was just seeping down his shirt. Fun.

Interesting way to die, bleeding out.

Mei quickly moved her hands back to her coat pockets as soon as she heard the door, her face still as bored and dull as ever. She was about to make a snarky remark before she saw...

Red.

Oh god.

She quickly moved off the wall, her eyes wide and full of the "what the hell?!" look as she moved closer to him.

"Idris what the f**k?!" She said loudly, a hint of anger in her voice, although it was mainly confusion and concern. "I-... Just-..." She stammered, not really able to put her thoughts into words at the moment. She shot her finger to a nearby chair then looked back at his face. "Sit your ass down, now." Her eyes were glaring at the red seeping through, and after she examined most of it, she rushed to get a spare towel to soak it.

"You idiot... Jesus christ, you idiot!" She muttered as she came back with the towel, grabbing the translucent box on her way back to where Idris was.

Idris frowned.

"What did I do now?" He scowled.

He turned around.

"Ohhh." He shrugged.

"It'll dry soon....ish.....hopefully."

"Maybe I'll bleed out and die looking like a shrivelled raisin. Fun."

"Sit your ass down, now."

"Wha- okay. Fiiine." Idris muttered.

"Just- hand me the towel. I'll see if I can reach my back- probably not."

Darcy Harper's POV

He sure didn't like to talk much...
Darcy sighed. Maybe they should both just leave the poor guy alone. He didn't seem to like talking to others.

"Would you like to come eat with us?" Darcy asked him. He felt like he should extend the offer.

He didn't want him to feel left out.

And it couldn't hurt, right?...

Sawyer Laurens's POV

"I knowwww, right? It really IS a crazy dream! And whoa, yes!" Sawyer flapped their hands. "You should TOTALLY come sit with us! Want to? Want to?"

They thought about it for a moment. "Maybe I should go invite Miyako too!" Darcy flinched at the mention of her name. "I'm sure she'd LOVE to come!"

"III... Think she's busy right now," Darcy said quickly. "Maybe we shouldn't bother her! Ohhh, look, the soup's done! You coming, Akari?"

Sawyer blinked. Huh. Darcy sure seemed in a rush.

Wonder why?

Did he... Not want Miyako coming here?

Kubo Atsushi

"Huh. So your answer is nothing, huh?" Kubo scruffed up his hair and looked away. "That'a the answer of someone who wants to go through life with all the answers given to them. Someone who wants everyone else's truths- without sharing their own."

He glanced at the end of the hallway. Kaoru stared back, unblinking. He closed his eyes and breathed out deeply.

"You really... are meant to be a therapist. I guess that's what we're all here for. Messed up enough that we have one thing left in our lives- and that's to pry into others."

A detective and a therapist. One meant to rip people to bits and throw what remained into a cell, and another meant to stitch people together again. In theory, how different.

In practice, how alike.

All the same; ultimately.

"All equalized," his lips briefly formed the words and he slammed them shut

Miyako Hiroto

"Arson?" Miyako tittered; fanning her face. "Oh, my darling wife, do you take me for a common criminal? Revelling in the pain and suffering of downtrodden society-" Her hand paused by her face.

"HELL YEAH, ARSON TIME!" she fist bumped Shi. "I'LL GET THE MATCHES!"

Kaoru Kajiwara

"Ye shall face the thousand hells."

"Already dead," Kaoru shot back. "Can confirm that it does not exist. NOW, LET'S GET GOING!"

Niwa Atsushi

"Hey, Niwa!" Niwa gave a wave and a grin to his little sister as she trotted into the library.

"Hey, gremlin! What're you up to? Missed me that much?"

She frowned, stopping in front of him, crossing his arms. "You forgot to make supper again." There was a note of reproach in her voice.

Niwa checked the clock and winced- half past six. He'd lost track of time. Now he'd really get an earful. "Sorry, kid. I'll make some Craft Dinner. How's that sound?"

She didn't move, even when he made to get up.

"Niwa..." she began.

She glared at him as he spoke, wanting to spew out so many different profanities, but she refrained.

"Just shut up, alright? Shriveled raisins are disgusting anyways..." She grumbled, opening the box and grabbing everything she could possibly need. She then rushed back to where he sat and knelt down, not once looking up at his face, only at the red on his shirt.

"Lift your shirt up," She demanded. "Last time you said you were gonna do it, you walked out looking like this." She grumbled, urgency, anger, and almost a sense of panic flooding her voice.

"I am not taking no for an answer." Her tone was harsh and strict, but she was being serious. She didn't really care about any other implications this situation had right now, and to be honest, any embarrassment she would've had was only replaced by concern and anger anyways.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Akari paused at the offer, not really sure what to do, or even say. I mean... He already got the ingredients out... Maybe they could wait for him. He was trying his best to recover after all.

A simple lunch wouldn't hurt.

"I..." He pursed his lips before he continued, lifting his head up a bit more. But instead of looking at the two, he looked at the counter he was going to use before he was interrupted. "Yeah... Yeah, sure..."

"I'll be with you in a bit..." He responded quietly, finally setting the stuff down on the counter.

...Wouldn't hurt to bring something else other than soup.

He said nothing at the mention of Miyako, not really caring much anyways.

Lucian Arbred's POV

He inhaled. "...I... Kubo. I've lived a life where, I don't know if I can believe anything with certainty. I don't know if the sun will shine tomorrow. I don't know if the rest of my family is even still alive right now. Knowing them... Maybe not. I could be dead tomorrow for all I know. And it wouldn't even matter. Because I'm just like Charon, when you think about it..."

A faraway look came upon his face. "I'm just meant to guide people across the river. The matter of my own life, or my own death, is unimportant. I might as well have never existed in the first place. But if..."

Lucian shuffled his knees, and set them down. He exhaled, and reluctantly pulled his scarf down, revealing the scars on his neck. "...if you want me to lay myself bare for your judgment, then I guess... That's your right, isn't it? As a detective. You look at everything, in its essence, and you decide if you seem others to be innocent or guilty. And... As for me... That's not my job. I'm supposed to help people face their guilt, and work through it."

He lowered his head. "...I'm supposed to do whatever it takes to help people. Whatever it takes to save them. And... I won't deny you're right. My... Life was messed up, I think. But... I don't want anyone else to suffer that way, like I did. I'll do whatever it takes to prevent that."

"...as a detective, you always search for the truth, don't you? And in a way, I do the same. But... Every truth, for everyone is different. And you have to help people find the truth that'll set them free."

...he felt so vulnerable right now, without his scarf on.

...but...

I want to help you... So I want you to trust me. Please?... Would you trust me?

Sawyer Laurens's POV

Sawyer beamed at Akari. "Okayyyy-! We'll save you a seat! See you soon tycoon! Great meeting you!"
Darcy was pulling the soup into bowls, and Sawyer pulled on his arm so hard that Darcy almost dropped the soup.

"A-Ack! Sawyer! Careful! Maybe you should carry one of the bowls?"

Sawyer blinked. "Oh! Yeah! Good point, haha! Sorry, Dace!"

Darcy rolled his eyes and picked up the other bowl. He grabbed a couple spoons while he was at it, and brought his own bowl to a table. One that they hadn't flipped over yet.

"YAYYYY! SOUP!" Sawyer snagged a big spoonful. "S-SAWYER, WAIT! BE CAREFUL! IT'S STILL H-"

"OWOWOW! MY TONGUE!" Darcy sighed and shook his head. "What did I tell you?..."

Sawyer frowned. "I was just so excited and sooo hungryy, I wasn't thinking!"

"Never mind. I'll just-- go get some ice cubes, okay? Be right back."

"Okay!" Sawyer chirped.

As they watched him walk away, Sawyer couldn't help but smile.

What would they do without him?

What would they do... Without Darcy?

"Darcyyyyy, hey! It's been a while! Do you wanna come out to play? I mean... If you have time?"

They went over and knocked on the door. "Darcy?"

There was no response.

Sawyer really didn't want to have to do this. Heading into their house unannounced...

Wasn't this kinda like, a breach of privacy? Then again... The two of them were friends! This was alright.

But then, a man Sawyer didn't recognize appeared at the door. "Heyyy, kid, what do you want?"

"Oh! Hellooo! I was just coming here to see my friend! Darcy Harper! Have you seen them?"

The man looked puzzled. "Oh... You mean... Mrs. Harper and her daughter? Yeah, well... They moved away, just yesterday."

Sawyer stared blankly. "Moved... Away?"

"Yeah! They don't live here anymore. Sorry, kid. Do you-"

A crooked smile came scross Sawyer's face. "Nah, it's okay! Everything is cool! Thanks, seeya!"

They ran. They ran and they ran and they ran. The day was no longer sunny, clouds had covered the sky, it had started to rain.

But Sawyer didn't feel like dancing.

They found themself on the bridge. That bridge, near Jade Stone Beach...

Here again. Where Darcy had almost jumped almost fallen by accident.

But Sawyer didn't feel like ice-cream right now. They sat down on the bridge.

...maybe, if they just told themself, that Darcy was here...

Things would be okay?

...why did you leave? Why did you leave, without telling me?

You're my friend, Darcy. You're a good person, Darcy.

Good people don't do that...

Do they?

Darcy Harper's POV

Darcy huffed, getting the tray of ice cubes out of the freezer. He had a disturbing thought... Someone could use a freezer to murder someone. But he shook it away.

...best not to think about that. He had to get these ice cubes to Sawyer.

Maybe no one else would die. Maybe things would be fine.

...if only he could think like them.
