Evolving Applin (pls help!)

It says on the "Honey" Forum page that if I have an Applin in my party and put Honey on the Honey Tree on Route 53, then boom, Applin wants to evolve into Flapple. If I have an Applin in my party and put Super Honey on the Honey Tree on Route 53, then boom, Applin wants to evolve into Appletun.

I've been trying to do this for about three weeks now and my Applin will not evolve. What am I missing? Is it just that there's a random chance that it will happen and I have really bad luck?

When you put honey on the honeytree, there's a random chance it will trigger the evolution, it's completely random
