How do I get dragon gems (by not buying them)?

The only Rumble Area you can get Dragon Gems from, is the Galar Region.
Aside from that area, Dragon Gems can be won at the Golden Slots [Plus Mode], found at the Treasure Hunt or found in Mystery Boxes.

You can also get them by fishing and gifting plushies

The best options might be gifting plushies or royal tunnel (just my opinion on that topic)

If you get five star pieces and go to ancient cave and pick something rare for a prize there is a chance of getting a dragon gem

You can get Dragon Gems from Bulletin Board, Dream World Shop by gifting Plushies, Treasure Hunt, Galar Region Rumble, Royal Tunnel, Mystery Boxes, Fishing and Golden Slot (Plus) mode.

Ive had a couple from Treasure hunts. gifting plushies was a nice update to getting random gems :)

Are there any particular plushies that need to be gifted? For example dragon type pokemon plushie for a higher chance to contain the dragon gem?

As far as I know, to get Dragon gems is totally random with every 5 DP you spend. The chances are pretty low and no, dragon-type pokemon plushies don’t increase the chances of getting dragon gems ^^'.
