after finding a pillow and blanket, he found a spot for himself and sat the shotgun aside, then laid over and stretched out a bit.
''if you ever get cold and that blanket doesn't help i wouldn't mind a cuddle buddy~'' he hummed, grinning a little as he looked over at Evie.

Evie let out a long, audible sigh and pulled the covers up to her nose in exasperation. She flushed, but it was too dark to see. "Goodnight, Oliver," she grumbled, staring at him for a while before trusting herself enough to close her eyes.

''night cutie~'' he hummed teasingly, then soon rolled over with his back to Evie as he tried to go to sleep, having a little trouble due to the cold hard ground.
he shifted around a bit where he laid before he got comfy and soon dozed off.

Evie woke up in a violent jerk, sitting upright and clutching her chest tightly as if it would rid of the knot in her throat. She breathed heavily, sweat beads forming on her temples and her heart racing far too fast. Her unconscious mind was never nice to her--the memories that she always wanted to suppress would forever haunt her, and so she sat there for a few seconds, her back hunched, as she tried to steady her breathing. It was barely daylight. The colors in the sky had formed but the actual light was yet to be unveiled, the birds lightly chirping in the distance.
Elli shifted from the cave and kneeled down beside Evie, his eyebrows knitted in concern. Her offered her a half-empty bottle of water and she took it gratefully, only allowing herself to down about an inch of it. "It's all okay," he whispered, offering a faint smile of reassurance. There were bags under his eyes.
"Yeah. It's... all fine," Evie echoed, pulling the blankets off of herself and regaining composure.

near the entrance of the cave stood Oliver and Dexter, the both of them chatting and planning on what to do for the day, though it was more Oliver catching Dexter up on what's happened in the past few year's.
Ivy was still out cold, seeming to have been more exhausted than she had looked.

Evie sighed and rubbed her eyes before putting her glasses back on, still trying to internalize reality. She hooked the pistol underneath her pillow to her belt--if she was being spied on at any point of the day, she wanted them to know that she was armed--and pulled her backpack closer to her.
"You... didn't sleep," she said to Elli, although her attention was directed on his knuckles. When he moved his fingers it seemed perfectly functional and normal, and he seemed to have feeling in them, but his knuckles were brass and quite alarming. The machinery was strange to Evie. Usually, modifications like that were used for amputees, but in Elli's case...
"It's kinda like an improvement, actually. I'm kind of weak, so it helps my punches hit harder."
Evie nodded. "You don't seem like the fighting type."
He only laughed. "I'm not, but I guess I have the skills to be if I wanted." He smiled at her and Evie hesitated before smiling back, standing up and brushing herself off. Elli walked towards Oliver and Dexter and motioned her to follow.

Oliver was looking out over the forest when he was speaking and took little notice to Elli and Evie walking up to him and Dexter, though Dexter glanced over and noticed Elli look tired, raising an eyebrow at him questionably.
''you are not fit to go anywhere in your state Elliot, your staying here and resting'' he said, pointing straight at Elli.
the rebellious lux may not look or openly admit he is concerned about the four's health and safety, but he truly was concerned and cared, and was wanting to try his best to keep them all safe.
they're children sent here to fight an adults war.... they don't deserve a fate like this he thought to himself, still utterly sickened at how the government is working on the fact that ruining a generations lives just to end a war is the "perfect" solution.

Elli blinked sharply when Dexter pointed at him, cocking his head questionably as if he were trying to read the Nova. "Alrighty," he said, more singsong than grim. "I'll stay with Ivy to be there when she wakes up," he added quickly so he didn't have to feel like he was a deadweight to the group.
Evie said nothing, standing beside Elli and waving slightly when Dexter looked over at them. She could see the anguish on his face when he turned--his disgust was strong enough to let it seep through--but had nothing to say about it. She was arguably angrier than him since she was one of the teenagers forced to participate in the mini-war.

Dexter looked at Evie and waved back, anything readable in his expression or gaze shifting back to an unreadable calm neutral.
''Oliver was updating me on the affairs of the Lux's and Nova's, but he say's that the Lux have invented something called a "cellphone"? what are those use for.....? i'm actually quite curious now'' as a glint of curiosity entered his gaze.

"Oh, uh, yeah. It allows you to speak with others from long distances. It's more popular with the Nova, though, since our government taps in on our conversations. The popularity has died down, especially when rumors of tracking devices were spread. That was a solid... decade ago?" Evie replied. Elli listened closely, quite fascinated with the perspective of a Lux; he had never actually spoken to one before this.
"We started the revolution or whatever of inventing when we were in a peace pact with the Nova, so they worked together to make practical inventions that benefitted the citizens. Like cell phones and stuff. After that, a Nova general was murdered--of course, they told us he committed suicide--by a Lux and the war burst into flames again. Ever since that, the Lux have focused their creations on machinery and weapon-related things." She rubbed the back of her neck as she spoke, her resentment for her country seeping into her tone.
"The Novas made an effort to catch up, but they were pretty desperate and made risky calls," Elli said softly, knocking his knuckles together. "I suppose I'm evidence of this."

Dexter nodded at them both and ran one of his hands through his hair, looking down for a moment before looking at them again.
''back when i was actually 18 i managed to sneak into a military laboratory and stole a syringe that had this strange serum that they were testing that gives immortality, hence why i haven't aged past 18 and look like this, a 37 year old trapped in my old 18 year old body....'' he muttered, though still audible enough for them to hear him.

Evie nodded--this answered most of her questions, and she felt less cynical because of it. "They tested with animal mutations, too," she sighed, reminded of a defect mutant creature that a friend of hers had kept. Evie scanned the area wistfully and looked back at Dexter, still a bit distracted by his eyes. "This place. Do you have any idea where they would have set the boundaries and how big it is?"

''this entire forest and the few ruins of towns along the outskirts were one the battlegrounds for nova's who were sent off in planes to safety, but were shot down and crash landed into the ocean.... many kids and teens were subjected to fight against each other for the lux's sick entertainment... one of these said town ruins were once my home before the destruction of war took it away from me'' he said, spreading his arms out as if he were some storyteller.
he sighed and lowered his arm's, his gaze falling to the stone floor before he continued.
''i left this place after that happened and camped out in the nova territories forestry.... that's when i met my girlfriend, Adriane...'' he said quietly, his voice catching after mentioning his loved one's name.
Dexter covered half of his face with face with one hand while his other had clenched slightly into a fist, which trembled slightly as memories flooded through his mind.
''goddammit..... why must you betray me now emotions...'' he muttered to himself, trying to fight back tear's that threatened to fall.

Elli's face scrunched with concern. "You don't have to talk about it if you don't want to," he said reassuringly, wanting to offer solace but fearing that he didn't know Dexter well enough to. Evie's head was bent to the ground, her arms crossed. She clearly wasn't sure how to handle Dexter almost crying, but Elli could read something else in her eyes--mourning. She must have lost someone, too, he thought, biting his bottom lip to refrain from saying anything.

Dexter took a few shaky breathes to calm himself down before sighing and rubbed his eye's, then looked back at them after he gained his composure back.
''i'm... fine.... anyway, i... i failed to protect the group i was with...... i failed them and i've lived with the guilt of what happened to my girlfriend..... you already know the rest'' he said, voice still noticeably still a bit shaky.

Evie was listening--she was too curious about Dexter's past not to. She was searching for any sort of lie, of manipulation, but she found it difficult to through his vulnerability (and tears). She was skeptical but a part of her wanted to believe him, as his story reminded her of her own. But he could have plucked it from another sad Nova kid to gain the sympathy of victims. She shook off her doubt and told herself to trust him for now, sympathizing with what he said for the time being. There was a silence in the air after he finished speaking and she knew that Elli was out of words, not sure whether or not it would be best to try and reassure him or stay silent.

his eye's rested on Evie when he was talking and his eye's narrowed just slightly, catching her trying to search for something, and once he finished he fully looked at her with an unreadable expression.
but his eye's said it all, the fact she didn't believe him still obviously both angered and upset him.
''i'm not blind girl, it's plainly obvious you still don't trust me, if you need proof than fine'' he snapped, reaching back behind his head as he unclipped the lockets chain and pulled the locket itself out from under his shirt.
''this was her locket, i've had this with me ever since she died, and ask yourself this you f---ing brat; did you even see a teen in the immense crowd at that meeting yesterday that looked like me? cause i sure as hell know i wasn't anywhere near that place!'' he shouted, the tears that had built up in his eye's earlier now trailing down his face without him seeming to care.
Oliver had jumped and was staring at Dexter with wide eye's.
Dexter soon put the locket back on and grabbed his sheathed dual sword that was propped up next to him before storming off to blow off some steam.

Explosive, Evie thought, pushing up her glasses and watching him as he walked off. Although I would've done the same thing. Elli had flinched next to her and covered his mouth, but his eyebrows were scrunched in concern--it was all too much like him to be worried for Dexter instead of afraid of him.
"Evie--" he started, but she interrupted him by shaking her head.
"No. Let's just leave him be and go looking for resources around the area... give him some extra time by not being here whenever the hell he comes back. Although he was certainly right about you needing sleep," she said, her tone flat as she looked at Oliver so she could avoid Elliot's soft eyes.

"You shouldn't be afraid of Dexter. It's a sensitive subject, y'know? He's trustworthy," Elli mumbled before she could fit in any more words, leaving her staring blankly at Oliver. She believed Dexter's words at this point but was trying to shove the encounter to the back of her brain; Dexter's pain reminded her too much of her own.
"Do you hunt?" She asked Oliver, stumbling a bit with her words. Elliot sighed and walked back over to Ivy, shaking his head slightly.

Ivy snored softly in her sleep and simply rolled over, still sound asleep even through all the yelling.

Oliver looked at Evie and stayed silent for a little while before he rested his shotgun on his shoulder, a playful and sly grin crossing his lips as his eyes lit up.
''of course i do, i used to go hunting with my father'' he said.
~~~~~~~~~~
once Dexter was for the most part out of earshot from the group and unsheathed his sword, yelling with frustration as he swung the sword at a tree, soon enough getting it stuck due to the force of his swing.
''she doesn't get it..... she won't ever get it...! i've been through hell and i've got innocent blood on my hands from so many years ago.... and i... i couldn't.. save them......!!'' Dexter sobbed, finally breaking down as he dropped to his knee's and covered his face.
"Okay," she said, nodding. Evie began to walk away and motioned for Oliver to follow her, sharing her thoughts softly as they walked. "It'd be best to go find a source of water first--no crap--but it worries me that other people beat us to it. Have you ever hunted with a knife? It's a hell of a lot harder, and I'm not too good at hunting in the first place, but we might have to if we don't want to alarm anyone." She pressed her lips tightly together, a habit of frustration, and wrinkled her nose. I'm sure Dexter would know most of the water sources, Evie thought to herself spitefully.
Her amber eyes darkened for a split second with something of a menace, but she turned her face away from Oliver when she made a comment, "I can handle most of the people killing if you need me to."
