Bastiaan recognized this demon to be Gerlach, one of the very few demons he knew that had blond hair. Gerlach turned his attention to the younger male behind him, who seemed to be frozen in place out of terror. This demon then hooked his hand under Durae's lower jaw, his sharp nails pressing into the male's skin, but not yet piercing it, and tilted the white-haired boy's head up to meet the his gaze. "I wonder how his soul tastes," the demon remarked, drawing his tongue over his own lips.
Bastiaan began to growl under his breath out of anger. "Take your hand off him."
The tallest demon, named Faas, had a wicked smirk on his face. "Oh? Is Bastiaan sticking up for a human? How pathetic," he stated, followed by a laugh.
The other two demons, Stefanus and Lievin, began to move even closer to Durae.

Am I going to get eaten by these guys!?
He could feel himself begin breathing harder. Another rain drop made itself known.
Then another.
The drops continued pouring down in a light sprinkle.
I have to get home, Durae thought.
Suddenly, the boy felt a cold hand swiftly find its way under his jaw. The hand gripped him, its nails slowly digging into his skin. His head was lifted so that deep azure eyes would meet the demon's harsh and distant ones. The young male flinched slightly as the blonde-haired being licked his lips. "I wonder how his soul tastes," he had said.
Durae's eyes widened in shock at the male's remark. He heard Bastiaan's growling, and the tallest demon's reply, but paid no mind, however, the other demons closing in on him made him slightly more uncomfortable.
He felt his own nails dig into the skin of his palm as he closed his right hand in a tight fist. "Who the hell do you think you are!?" The boy yelled after his moments of silence. His voice cracked, not only from the fear he tried so hard to hide, but from misuse, as he didn't deem it necessary to yell all that often, as he was a rather antisocial person. He kicked the male's shin in a sorry attempt to free himself.
"I said to let him go!" Bastiaan's growl directed at the other demons become louder and quite vicious and within moments, his true self had appeared. Twisted black horns had sprouted from the sides of his head and his nails grew longer into dangerously sharp points, much different from a demon's in a calm state. He charged at the group of demons, the fury taking over, but he still had some sense in him to be careful of Durae who was still standing a bit petrified behind the group.
He felt his own hand clasp around Gerlach's neck in a tight rage and he saw Gerlach had released his own grip on Durae's jaw.
All the other demons averted their gazes over to Bastiaan instead of being on the human boy and even with Bastiaan's hand around Gerlach's neck, the other demon still had a wild grin on his face. Faas, Stefanus, and Lievin all were trying to seize onto Bastiaan and pull him off.
"Durae, run," Bastiaan snapped urgently, still not releasing his grip on the other demon.

Durae's eyes instinctively widened in shock when he saw two dark horns sprout from either side of the teen's head. He watched as Bastiaan's nails grew long and extended into a point. He stared at the teen as he quickly ran towards Durae and the demons, grabbing the blonde's neck harshly.
Durae stumbled backwards as Gerlach let go of his jaw. He lost his footing from the unexpected release and fell on the ground, staring at the sight before him.
What the...? he thought, shocked.
The demons practically piled themselves upon Bastiaan in an effort to remove the male from his tight grip on Gerlach's throat.
"Durae, run," the male commanded. Durae didn't want to move. He could barely think. The word "run" repeated itself several times in the boy's head, until he finally pushed himself off the ground. He wiped the small trickles of blood off his chin and began running to the closest building he saw, so as to be out of the demons' sight. The nail marks began stinging a bit, but he continued running until he finally rounded the large building's corner.
He stopped, panting, and laid his head on the building's brick wall until he caught his breath. He peeked around the corner, acknowledging that the demons were still dog-piling.
The demon had endured several hard blows from the three unrestrained demons, but despite the pain he felt, he had not given up until Durae was safely out of sight. At that time, he had released his grip on the blonde-haired demon's neck and bounced back to give space between himself and the four others. He was panting heavily at this moment, mostly from himself receiving the hits he had from the higher ranking demons. The pain was now quite noticeable as his right cheek and the side of his body began to throb and burn, signaling that inflammation had begun.
"Are you mad?" Faas retorted, his crimson eyes glowing with anger. "What are you doing, attacking your own kind and defending a human? Have you got no sense?"
"This won't be the end of it, I hope you know," Lievin muttered, "if he finds out, you're never going to taste another human soul again. And then what will you do?"
"Pathetic, just absolutely pathetic," Gerlach sneered under his breath, "Let's get out of here. I'm done dealing with this fool."
Stefanus shot Bastiaan a disappointed look before he and the others' bodies turned into a dark mist before dissipating. Bastiaan was still trying to catch his breath, but he had to get himself out of sight before another human saw what kind of mess he was. Instead of running straight down the sidewalk back to his apartment, he figured an easier thing to do was to hide in an alley and wait until he could catch his breath.
There was an alley just beside where the fight had been so he made his way inside and out of view. He leaned his back against the wall and slid down until he was sitting. I need to calm down, I can't go back out there like this, he thought to himself as he tried to control his breathing. I can't believe that put so much strain on my body. I can't be doing this.
Durae... What is that human going to think?
Many thoughts rushed through his head as he sat there alone in the alley, trying to calm himself. All his thinking was doing the exact opposite of what he wanted and he closed his eyes.
Oh, what mess have I gotten myself into?

He took a deep breath and pushed himself up, leaning his back against the building's brick wall. He bit his lip, then remembered it was still raining. The rain had begun pouring down harder, but the boy was protected by the edge of the roof peaking off of the talk building's walls. He scratched the back of his head, then sighed. He pulled his hoodie over his head and stuck his hands in its pockets.
As he rounded the corner of the building, he noticed a figure sitting down beside the building's wall. He acknowledged the figure as Bastiaan. He furrowed his brow in slight anger, slight disappointment, and mostly sheer confusion at the male's unexpected transformation.
He closed his eyes and let out a soft breath as he began walking through the dark alley, attempting to avoid any contact with the dark-haired male. He walked right passed the older student as if he didn't acknowledge his presence.
What the hell are you?
But, it was useless to hide. What had happened, happened; there was no way he could possibly erase it from existence. To him, his curiosity had proven to have gotten the best of him. He would now have to pay the price for it. Whether it'd be trouble by the humans, or even worse by his own kind, and the one that ruled them all. Either way, he'd have to take the consequences.
The male braced himself when he heard the sound of sneakers against the sidewalk, making their way towards the alley he was sitting in. The familiar appearance of the white-haired boy had turned the corner into the same alley he was sitting in, but it was different. He could sense the distance the boy had put between himself and the demon. The younger male's gaze never fell onto his own and he continued to walk, as if not even acknowledging the demon's presence.
His own eyes followed the boy's movements, but he himself, could not find the words to speak. He was too ashamed of himself - of what he was and at his failure. It was not until the boy had distanced himself even further from the other male before he mustered the strength to croak out the word he could find.
"Durae."

He took a deep breath, then slowly turned whilst breathing out to face Bastiaan.
His blue eyes whipped over to the taller student sitting on the wet ground. The young male pulled his hood off his white hair as a deep gust of wind blew from the northern side of the dank alley.
His eyebrows furrowed in anger.
"Do you have any vague idea what you did!?" The boy yelled.
"I could have died! Why didn't you get there sooner? Who in the world were those guys!? Why are you here anyway?" He took a deep breath after yelling his interrogation, then continued.
"Not only did you scare the hell out of me, but all of that stupid fighting you idiots did was caught on the street's security cameras!"
He could vaguely hear the sound of his own voice echoing throughout the alley.
"And what on earth happened to you!? I-I-I mean, growing some sort of horns? What are you, a demon!?" He shoved his hands back into his jacket's pockets and blew a piece of hair out of his face, waiting to hear what Bastiaan's response would be.
He let the younger male release all his anger before he dared to speak. It was time that he had to be true to himself. He couldn't keep hiding from what he truly was. He let out a deep sigh, before meeting Durae's gaze directly with his own.
"You're correct," the male confessed in a quiet murmur, but loud enough to be heard through the pelting rain, "That's exactly what I am. I'm the one that takes away the souls of the innocent. I'm the one whose only purpose is to bring more souls to hell. That's me."
Instead of continuing after his previous sentence, he took a few moment's pause to remove his gaze from Durae's and instead look at the ground before him as he sat there, finding his next words.
"The other beings you saw where also demons. I did not send them here at all; I had no intention to harm anyone as I stayed in this world, but I guess my curiosity got the best of me and I apologize deeply for that..." his voice trailed off and he decided to push himself up and off the ground.
The rain was now beginning to pour into the alleyway the two were in. A distant crackle of thunder could be heard through the roar of the rain.
"Security cameras?" he murmured aloud, as he remembered what Durae had mentioned. He glanced back towards the roof of the towering building above him and he felt a knot in his chest. I'm so stupid...

Durae was positive he felt his heart skip a beat when the older male informed him of the commotion-creating beings' true identities. Durae felt his face get pale. He felt a smile tug at the corner of his mouth, and he suddenly burst into rather sarcastic sounding laughter. He put his hand on his forehead and tilted his head back as he "laughed", then stopped as he opened his eyes to stare at the dark clouds that ferociously rested above him.
"Demons, huh?" He mumbled, but loud enough so Bastiaan could hear. "Send innocent people's souls to hell?" He smiled a rather feigned smile out of his uncontrollable fear. "I must be dreaming," he mumbled again. "Or more like having a nightmare," he continued with a dry sounding sense of humor.
A loud crack of thunder and an almost blinding flash of lightning reminded him that he was most certainly not dreaming. He was outside in a soft storm with someone who claimed to be a demon.
He took and released a deep breath before he began speaking once again. He felt as if he had talked more this one day than he had in the previous week.
"So tell me," he began. "What are you planning on doing about the video surveillance camera footage?" He asked Bastiaan as he pointed to the small cameras located in the street's stop-lights.
"Those cameras aren't checked very often, but if someone happens to run that red light or something any time soon, the camera operators will most likely see you. And if the camera operators see you, who knows what they'll do?" He paused a moment to add more of a "dramatic affect". "So, what're you planning on doing about it?"
Durae stared at Bastiaan with a straight face and chilling cold blue eyes as he waited to hear what Bastiaan had to say.
As Durae brought the subject of the security cameras back up, he decided that getting rid of the evidence of the fight would have to be his first priority. The fight happening in front of Durae was already bad enough to him and the last thing he wanted was the whole world to know about his existence. It was only his first day living in the human world and he already caused some sort of disturbance without intending to.
Without saying anything in response to the boy, he turned himself completely around to face the security camera that hung almost directly above where he was standing. His gaze settled upon the device and he focused intently on its shape. Within moments, his eyes glowed a menacing red and the male took a deep breath through his mouth. There was a loud crash as the device sparked and shattered into several pieces, falling into a heap as it hit the rain-soaked ground. The demon's eyes reverted back to their usual shade and the male turned back around to face the younger male. He was relieved that he had one less thing to think about, but now he still had to worry about Durae.
"You have to believe me when I say I didn't come here to cause trouble or to harm anyone. I'm not like the others, rather, I'm far from it. It's true, there's one thing I need to survive on, but you can trust me; I'm not here for your soul. I want to learn how humans live their lives - I mean, we don't know anything about human life, we just take it away from them."

He thought of a few more sentences he dreamed would be good and poetic for him to say, but was interrupted when he felt his phone's vibrations against his leg. He pulled the small smartphone within his pants' right pocket out and looked at who the caller was. He gained a slightly irritated look as he saw the contact name "Mom" show up. He wasn't sure why he was surprised - it's not like anybody from school had his contact as far as he knew.
He slid his thumb against the screen to answer the call and lifted the phone up to his ear. "Hey," he said in an attempt to sound somewhat friendly, but it turned out sounding as if he were uncomfortable or nervous, which he couldn't say wasn't exactly true at the moment. "Hey honey," his mother said in a rather worried voice. "Where are you? Are you okay?" He nodded - fully aware that the woman he was talking to couldn't see him. "I'm fine. It started raining, so I'm waiting for the rain to quiet down a little before I continue heading home," he said in an unintentionally stern tone. He noticed he sounded rather grumpy, so he reverted to a classic subject-changer.
"By the way, Mom," he stated, waiting to get the woman's full attention once more. "What's for dinner?" He asked. He was proud that could actually make himself sound slightly less aggravated than normal while talking on the phone. He heard a soft, "oh" come from the other side of the phone, assuming the woman had yet to plan was they were going to eat. There was a pause on the line, and he smiled at his mother's airheadedness.
"How does fried chicken sound? If you want, I can go pick some up from the store," came the woman's soft voice once again. He smiled so that it would be easier for him to talk with a more care-free sounding attitude. "That sounds great," he said.
He remembered Bastiaan was still present, sitting against the building's wall in front of him. "Well, anyway, it stopped raining so hard, so I'm going to get my stuff. I'll be there soon," he said.
"Oh, okay honey."
"Love you," he said as he concluded his conversation. He hung up before the woman could speak again, so as not to make the call drag on any more than it already had. He sighed as he put his phone back in pocket and was reminded that time was still existent, and that he had to get home before the sun went down.
He shifted his blue eyes back over to the male sitting on the ground and thought about what to say next. All of his ideas came flashing through his mind in a quick fury, and the only question he could grasp was the one he asked the male.
"Do you have any place to live?"
Even though Bastiaan could tell the young boy's words were filled with uncertainty, saying those words were enough to convince the demon that things would be okay after all. He didn't blame the boy at all if he was still terrified of the demon's true self; he was a creature known to bring destruction and it was only natural to be afraid of it. But with time, he hoped that Durae would realize that he wasn't like all the rest, even with the incident that happened.
There were several moments of silence that passed between the two after those words were spoken and it was then interrupted when Durae got a call and answered his phone. A few sentences were spoken by the boy into the phone, but Bastiaan had no idea who was on the other side. The male listened closely to see if he could pick out who it was, as he was curious after all. It was then when the word "mom" came out of the boy's mouth that Bastiaan had an idea on who it was. The demon had not realized how much time had passed since the two had gotten out of school and he could guess that Durae's mother wanted to check up on him and see where he was.
The phone call had then ended soon after, with Durae telling his mother that he would be making his way back home now. The younger male then turned his attention back to the demon, asking another question, with more ease this time around.
The older male thought back to the apartment he had stayed in just the night before. He wasn't particularly fond of it; the previous owners had kept this section of the apartment unkempt and it didn't look like the owners of the business cared about how each room looked like before they rented it out to the next person. As well, there wasn't air-conditioning in his apartment, so he only had the option to keep the apartment's windows open to get any sort of fresh air inside. He had a lot of cleaning up to do if he wanted to stay there, but he wasn't going to complain. So, Bastiaan decided to keep his response short and simple when answering Durae's question.
"I rented out an apartment just down the street. It's not too big, but it's enough for me to stay in for the time being while I'm here. It's only me, after all."

"Anyway, I guess I should get going now," he quietly mumbled. He put his right hand back in his pocket and tilted his head down a bit. "Thanks for uh...saving me," he whispered under his breath as he pulled his hood back over himself to not only help protect him from the rain, but to hide his embarrassment for having to be helped in the first place.
He was fully aware of the unfortunate fact that lying to his mother about the rain ceasing was not the best idea, but he figured it'd be better for his mother to keep calm rather than worry, so he shifted his weight and began walking, until he realized something. If he happened to get attacked once again on his way home, he'd have nobody to ask to help him, unaware of the fact that the two freshmen would be heading the same route for the majority of the long walk home.
The boy turned around, feeling himself slightly blush out of nervousness. "You have a phone, right?" He asked somewhat quietly, the lack of enthusiasm caused by nervousness and him being awkward.
He didn't wait for the older male to reply before speaking once again. "Could I...get your phone number?" He then realized he sounded a bit clingy, so he quickly thought of something to else to say. "Not that...I want it or anything...I'll just be out of luck if another crazy demon happens to appear out of nowhere again." He lightly kicked the ground with his foot out of embarrassment.
Before the two had actually separated, Durae had asked Bastiaan for his phone number. His reasoning was quite understandable, so he paid no mind to it. He was more than happy to help out and prevent those demons from attacking Durae again. The demon slipped out his phone from his jeans pocket and entered in the passcode. "I just really hope there won't be a next time," the male muttered under his breath as he took a couple steps towards the younger boy.
"Here it is," he said as he started to read off the numbers. This was actually his first time using his phone, as he didn't exactly have any use for it yet.

He felt a shiver run down his spine as the rain continued drenching the pair of students. It was already getting somewhat windy, and Durae could tell that it would begin thundering rather loudly and raining even harder if he didn't hurry home. He rubbed his blue eyes and shoved his phone into his pants' pocket and turned around, making a small waving motion with his hand.
The white-haired boy yawned as he trudged through the rain. He had felt rather lucky that it hadn't started raining too hard, and despite being already almost soaked, he wanted to get home before the rain had poured down on him with all its fury. He was fully alert of his surroundings due to the fact that he most certainly did not want to be hunted down again by blood-wanting demons.
He rubbed his chin as it began stinging a bit from him remembering what had happened. It didn't feel as if it had happened too long ago, so Durae checked his watch in an attempt to confirm that it hadn't happened so long ago. He was rather surprised when he saw that the time was 5:16 PM. School normally ended at 3:05 PM.
"I'm home," he called as he opened the door. He heard his mother's soft footsteps as she was walking around in the kitchen. She trotted around the kitchen's corner with a bright smile on her face until she saw Durae dripping everywhere. "Oh my," she exclaimed. "You're soaking wet! Go take a hot shower right now and put your clothes in the dryer or else you'll get a cold."
If there was any word to describe the boy's mother, it'd be "overprotective". Granted, she was a sweet woman, but she fretted a lot and was constantly making sure that everything the boy did was alright according to her standards. He sighed and began walking up the stairs.
"Oh, and Durae," the woman called from downstairs. "Take a quick shower, okay? Dinner will be cold if you take too long." Durae nodded and turned on the shower's hot water, placing his phone on the bathroom counter as he undressed and stepped into the shower.
By the time he had made it back to the apartment building, his clothes were soaking wet and his hair was clinging to his face. As he reached into his other pocket for his room key, a shiver had crept up throughout his body. "I'm not used to being this cold," he muttered to himself as he pulled his key out and opened the front door to the building. It was such a difference inside; as it was starting to get colder outside again, the heat was now on in the building, so it was at a fairly comforting temperature.
The male made his way up the stairs of the apartment building and onto the second floor where his room was, his room key still grasped in the palm of his hand. His room was towards the back of the building, but it wasn't too far of a walk considering the building was pretty small. When he made it to his room, he slid the key inside of the lock and twisted it, pushing the door open. He was greeted once again by the stagnant air of his apartment, something he still hadn't gotten used to.
The first thing on his mind was to get out of his wet clothes and change into something that was dry. He made his way over to the drawers that was to the right of his bed and pulled out a white, loose-fitting t-shirt and light gray sweatpants.
It was a nightmare trying to get out of the skinny jeans. Not only were they already tight, but the fact that they were entirely soaked made them cling to the male's skin even more. After about a minute's struggle, the male was finally able to remove the jeans and he threw them onto the floor. He untied the tie around his neck and unbuttoned his shirt, tossing them onto the wet pile below. It was only after he had changed into the warm, dry clothes before he took the rain-soaked ones and placed them in the dryer.
Once he felt like he finished everything he needed to do, he threw himself onto his bed with a heavy sigh. What a hell of a day...
He pulled his bed sheets over him and closed his eyes. I just hope Faas and them won't be back. What exactly are they planning? It isn't like us to be trying to take souls out in the open during the day.
Souls...
The word reverberated in his mind. The thirst was coming back to him.

He always enjoyed taking long and warm showers. The water dripped down the boy's arms and off his elbows as he popped open the dark blue lid of his green shampoo-conditioner bottle. He hummed a soft tune as he squeezed the liquid into his hand and rubbed it in his hair.
He was in the shower for another twenty-five minutes or so before his mother called him and commanded him to hurry. He twisted the knob so that the water would quit running out of the metal faucet and reached over the side of the shower and pulled his towel, then meticulously laid it on the ground. He stepped onto the towel, wiping the water off of his skin. "Durae," his mother called once again. He sighed and rubbed his hair with his towel in order to help it dry faster.
Durae walked down the stairs in a large t-shirt and his boxers to the dinner table. His mother had just sat down, and was fiddling around with the food on her plate with her chop sticks. "Honestly, Durae. I give you all these nice clothes to wear, and you come downstairs in that," she said as she gestured toward the boy. He shrugged and picked up a piece of pork, then promptly stuck the whole piece in his mouth.
He laid his head on his hand and pushed the pork around the glass plate with his chopsticks.
I wonder how Bastiaan's doing, he thought to himself.
Durae, his mind involuntarily thought.
Cut it out, the demon thought in response as he gained control of his mind once more. You can't be doing stupid things like this.
With an annoyed groan, the male rolled onto his side, facing his apartment's windows. There was a sudden shooting pain running along his side and he grimaced in pain. I totally forgot about that...
The male sat up in bed and pulled up his shirt to look at his side. He was astonished at what he saw; along his whole side, just to a bit below his rib cage were splotches of grisly red bruises. He knew it could have been worse, considering that they were higher ranking demons who had much more power than he had himself, which got him to thinking. Despite him attacking or holding back one of his own kind and defending a human, these demons didn't go all out on him when they tried to get him to release Gerlach. It was bewildering to him, but he couldn't pinpoint why it was so.
The demon laid back down, now on his back to avoid the bruises, and stared up at the ceiling. The day, in short, had been quite a mess. It put more strain on his body than he expected and it left him exhausted. His body still felt cold from being outside in the rain just a few hours before, even though he was wrapped up in his blanket and wearing what should be warm clothes underneath. The glowing clock at his bedside read 8:42 PM and the darkness that melted around him was comforting. It was not long before his eyes began to shut and the male fell into a deep sleep.

"Goodnight, mom. See you tomorrow," he said as he ran up the stairs. "He seems awfully happy for some reason," the woman mumbled to herself as she folded the towel. She hung the towel up on its small rack and rubbed her delicate hands through her brown hair.
Durae had inherited his ghost white hair from his father, and his blue eyes from his mother. His father was a rather tall man, while his mother was petite. The boy didn't remember much of his father, as he had died when the boy was only two years old. He wasn't quite sure what had happened to his father - nobody was. The man was just found dead on the street.
Durae shook his head as he entered his bedroom. "Don't think about the bad things before you go to bed. They'll give you nightmares. Think of all of the happy things," his mother would tell him when he was younger.
He shifted his weight to his heals and fell onto his bed, sprawling his arms across the dark blue comforter. He closed his eyes. I should really get to bed before I fall sleep, he thought to himself.
He hoisted himself up into a sitting position and shifted his eyes to the bathroom in his room. It was small, just with a mirror and counter with an implanted sink as well as a toilet. He stood up and made his way to the bathroom. The tiles felt cod on his bare feet, which he was pretty used to.
He grabbed his toothbrush and squirted the blue toothpaste onto it, then began brushing his teeth. Once satisfied, he cleaned his toothbrush and rinsed, then turned off the bathroom light.
He yawned as he walked to his door, turning off the overhead light as well. The switch made a clicking sound as he flicked it, and the room went dark. He hopped into his bed, pulling the thick comforter over him. He reached over and and grabbed his phone's power cable and plugged it into the mobile's power socket, then leaned back into his bed.
The phone turned on whenever it was plugged or unplugged, which signaled that it was charging, which was satisfactory enough for Durae. The boy never liked sleeping with sheets, as he felt like they just got in the way. Snuggling into the warmth of his bed, he concluded the night by closing his eyes and falling asleep.
