yes you need super rod for the retro, you can see which pokemon you can catch with which rod in pokeheroes wiki page emera beach

mkay i was just double-checking since the guide was a tad bit vague with not being able to get retro before the super rod
like it has the symbol beside it for all three rods

Oh my LORD is Shellder the rarest encounter with the Good Rod. I've caught every other fish with it including a shiny Magikarp yet I've yet to see a single shelled survivor. Did they change the odds?
