Clamperl apparently evolves into Huntail just by having the DeepSeaTooth used on it, not actually traded holding the item as the evolution guide states.

Did you give it to a Clamperl that was a different OT from yours?

That works? Didn't know that. Yes, it was a different OT's Clamperl. On the other hand, though, I have two other Clamperl from the same OT and neither of them will evolve when I use a DeepSeaScale on them.

You don't 'use' it, you 'give' it (as you did with the DeepSeaTooth), because they need to hold the item when being traded.
From what I recall, the site recognizes 'different OT' as traded, even if it's not recent (or not 'traded', but bought through the Auction House).

No, I used the DeepSeaTooth, and one of my Clamperl is holding a DeepSeaScale and has been for days. I'm pretty sure that when I selected the DeepSeaTooth as well it specified that it could be used on Clamperl (though I might be misremembering), which the DeepSeaScale definitely doesn't.

I just checked, and you are absolutely right.
The DeepSeaTooth acts as a simple item-evolution, while it should work as a trade-evolution.

(Has the Clamperl that's been holding the DeepSeaScale also been interacted with these past few days? It still needs to level up to evolve as well ;) )

Just levelled it up there and it didn't evolve, so I don't even know what's going on any more. :D

Well, the fact that the Clamperl didn't evolve, means the 'trade' requirement isn't broken (as much). It still needs to be traded, as it should be, so don't worry too much about not getting the Gorebyss. Trade it while it's holding the Scale, and it should evolve into Gorebyss :)

The only problem is that the other one evolved into Huntail without being traded.

(Sorry for the confusion, I hope it all makes sense now ^^' )
