Drayce nuzzled her in return, his prayers going with hers.

Nathana nodded and stood silently, she knew her voice would crack if she tried to speak. Her tail followed behind her, swaying slowly and hanging low out of respect as they walked over to Khaalida.

Khaalida's eyes were fixated on Faolan's. She couldn't have died. Not Melez... Not her... "Y-you're not, serious... Are you?" Tears fell down the sides of her face as her eyes filled up. The salt stung the cuts on the sides of her head, but the pain inside her hurt far more. "No..." Most of her ribs had gone back in place and she forced herself to sit up, only to hear Azazael's pleading. "Oh Gods no..." She left a bloody print of where she had laid on the stone.

Hecate trembled as she gently pushed Khaalida back down. "Don't get up yet. Let me heal you," she pleaded softly. "I couldn't help her...I know you can't die but let me save you from some pain."

Faolan sniffled and wiped at his eyes as he nodded. "...we couldn't stop him...I'm sorry...She'll come back though...she has to come back..." he whispered.

"I...I should go speak with her parents," Stella said softly. "Zorn, can you stay here? Watch over them and Azazeal?" she asked her youngest softly. He nodded, dumbfounded. "What are we going to do with her?" he asked. "We'll give her a proper burial. She's gone from this body..." she murmured.

"But, Melez..." Khaalida grunted as her arm made a clicking sound as it snapped back into its normal place. "She's, she's really..." She raised that hand and covered her eyes as her tears came in more numbers.

Nathana knelt beside Hecate and put a hand on Faolan's shoulder. "She hasn't really left..." She knew that wouldn't help. She knew saying that she'd always be with them wouldn't help ease the pain of her being gone.

Far away in the mountain home of Melez's parents, the fires that lit the halls grew dim. They knew what had happened. And they mourned for her pain, and for the pain of the family that she had helped form.

"Is beyond my reach, beyond my help," Hecate said through her tears. "You, Khaalida, are not. I have no idea how we're going to tell the other two...but right now, you are in pain and I can fix it," she whispered, beginning to take away that pain and heal the woman before her.

Faolan nodded, still holding her hand. "We have to bury her...let's get you healed for that," he said gently as he brushed his tears aside.

Stella made her way to their home, calling upon their blessing and her own magic to appear on the couples doorstep. She couldn't go in without their permission.

Deep in the cave, Azazeal curled in on himself, shaking with his heartbreaking sobs. He begged for someone to bring back his Melez. Zach crossed his mind and he wondered where he'd been at the wedding. But it hurt to think of that, of Melez bright and shining in her red dress. Her ring! He needed her ring! And her star patterned outfit he'd made. Struggling to his feet, the god staggered back to try and find them.

Khaalida, once healed, sat up and pulled herself into Faolan's arms. "But... She has to come back... We can't bury her if she's to come back..." She wouldn't accept that Melez was actually dead. She couldn't bring herself to see the body. She wouldn't. She couldn't.

Nathana sat in silence, knowing that Khaalida was in Faolan's hands, literally and figuratively. She turned to hug Hecate.

Eziekiel opened the door, her face grim, and even her faint smile held no warmth. "Come in," She stepped to the side to allow her entrance. "I hoped that they would have had longer to be with one another. They seemed so happy together..." She said with a quiet sigh as she closed the door behind Stella.

Melez's ring was still on her finger, and her dress was hung in their room on the door of the cabinet.

Faolan rubbed her back, kissing the top of her head. "I know...I know...but she's...Azazeal would have brought her back if he could. She isn't in pain...she's safe and looking after us," he whispered against her temple. "She is safe now..."

Hecate pressed herself against Nathana, unable to comprehend it. "A part of me is glad I can't reach her...I'd be too tempted to try to put her back...it'd torture her," she admitted to the scaled woman. "I couldn't live with that...oh gods..."

"As did I...I saw her going through what you did but not this...I'm so sorry...I'm so very sorry," Stella told her, offering the woman a hug.

Zorn saw Azazeal coming and put his hands out. "You can't take her, Azazeal. I know how much it hurts but you can't take her back there."

"Her ring," Azazeal choked out. "Please...I need her ring..." Zorn's heart ached seeing his brother like this and he nodded before picking it up and handing it to him. Azazeal clutched the glittering stone to his chest before going to their room. He had paused at the door before falling to his knees. He couldn't...he just couldn't go in yet. "...please bring her back," he whispered for the hundredth time.

Khaalida couldn't even speak. She simply sat there weeping into Faolan's shoulder, her hands gripping his shirt tightly. Endless thoughts and prayers raced through her mind. Why not her? Why wouldn't she have died? Perhaps some God or demon would exchange them? Is this what was meant to be? Could none of them really have happiness?

Nathana shook her head and buried her face in Hecate's hair. "None of us could live with it..." She whispered as the tears just kept falling.

Eziekiel stood frozen on the spot for a moment before her facade melted and her eyes shut, wet lines retraced the paths of their fallen brethren down her face. She stepped into the hug and clung to the goddess. Her little Melez, her little baby was gone. "She'd just barely begun..." Her voice cracked and ended in a broken whisper.

Faolan shook his head as he held her. "Don't. Don't think like that. I know what you're doing because I did it and I'm doing it. We can't...she wouldn't want it..."

Hecate sniffled and nodded, clinging to her tighter.

Stella hugged her, gently rubbing her back. "I know...I know...she'll come back. I know she will...one day, she will come back and they'll meet...I hope," she murmured. "We plan to burry her...would you like to come? You and your husband?" she asked, hoping to comfort the family.

"But I want her back..." Khaalida whispered, just barely audible.

Eziekiel sniffled and took a step back wiping the tears off of her face. "I would like to come, yes, but my husband..." She paused taking a breath and straightening her posture. "My husband is mourning by himself. He's not taking this very well, and I can't find him. I trust him, and know that he'll come out of it soon enough." She glanced down at her clothes. "If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to change quickly... Something more suited to a f-" She couldn't finish the word and clenched her jaw tightly as she turned and headed for her room. Once out of sight she made quick work of dressing, and returned mere moments later.

"I do too," Faolan whispered.

Stella hugged her again. "We're going to celebrate her. Her life and our love of her," she murmured comfortingly. "It isn't forever. Most things are never forever." Once they were ready, Stella teleported them back using her magic. It strained her but she didn't care. This was important.

Khaalida had her face tucked into Faolan's shoulder, so she didn't see the arrival of the two mothers.

Nathana thankfully had glanced up and saw them. She couldn't speak, she knew her voice wasn't strong enough. Eziekiel had begun walking towards them, her black dress flowed off of her like a shroud of heavy fog, and her hooded cloak simply added to the effect. She stopped when she got within two yards of the body of her daughter and she could get no closer. The mangled corpse, bruised, bloody, broken. Her stomach wrenched as did the rest of her innards. The pain she must've felt. She shook her head slowly as fresh tears spilled, her knees trembled and gave out, her hands shielded her face as she wept. "My baby, my little baby..." She murmured over and over.

Faolan held her close.

Hecate watched her, standing next to Lady Death herself. Stella kneelt next to her, offering as much comfort as she could.

Azazeal had entered the room and took up Melez's dress. He held it and the ring in his hands as he passed back out into the main cave. He saw Eziekiel and a mournful sob spilled out. "I'm so sorry...Eziekiel- I didn't...I told her to come here- I thought she'd be safe- I'm so sorry," he cried out, staggering towards the mother of the woman he loved. He had Melez's feather as well. He couldn't give it up. He wouldn't give it up. "I...I should have done more...should have protected her..." the realization that he'd felt her leave this world as he'd been killing his father hit him like a ton of breaks and he fell to his knees, a heart wrenching sob tearing out of his throat. "No...no...no..." he moaned, begging her to come back, that he was sorry.

Nathana kept a supporting arm around Hecate's shoulders as she stayed beside her, trying to do just the same.

After almost a full minute Eziekiel turned and lifted her eyes to Azazael, her eyes reddened by her tears. However, her expression wasn't angry, and had no hint of hate. "You did all you could," Her voice quivered as she forced it not to break, her mind racing over things to say. "She," A moment of silence as a memory returned with pure clarity. "When she was little, she asked me how I died one night..." She sniffled, hoping this would make these moments less painful, and to provide some sort of explanation. "I told her that I died trying to protect the ones I loved, but I failed... She put her hand on my shoulder and with the sternest of expressions," A faint smile pulled at her lip. "She told me that that was how she'd die, protecting her family." She wiped at a tear and stood up. "Azazael, my daughter loved you with every ounce of her being, and she wouldn't want you to blame yourself for her choice."

A slow, warm breeze swept through the cavern, and as it moved over Melez's form, it seemed to be breaking her apart.

Stella nodded in agreement. "By blaming yourself, you take away her choice and diminish her sacrifice. She did as she wanted to, living with free will," Stella murmured.

Azazeal smiled softly at the memory, thinking it perfectly Melez. He allowed himself to be comforted. But when the breeze stirred, breaking apart the body of his beloved, Azazeal cried out, throwing himself in front of her and gathering her in his arms as best he could. "Don't break her...you've taken her from us! Let her soul rest," he demanded of whomever was in control of this.

A male voice spoke softly from somewhere in the cave, but it couldn't be located. "She's not broken, and never was, be calm Azazael..."

The remains stirred up and around Azazael and began collecting behind him, and as the last bits joined the mass, a golden white light, far too bright to look at, shone brilliantly through the parts. As the light dimmed, a silhouette could be made out. Two pairs of wings unfurled, one an off white, speckled with gold. The other a deep mahogany speckled with a lighter red. Flowing fabric, the color of galaxies and distant stars was the next to materialize. The fabric clothed a ruby skinned demon, and when she opened her amber eyes, a soft smile pulled at her lips. Melez had come home. The light disappeared as her feet touched the ground, and her eyes were waiting for those of her husband's to meet them.

Nathana and Eziekiel were both staring in complete awe, their breath held, not daring to let it out in fear that she'd be blown away.

Hecate, Stella, Faolan and Zorn all stared at her, jaws on the floor. None of them knew what to make of this new development. But they were very happy. Faolan nudged Khaalida gently, pointing her out.

Azazeal shook his head, trying to catch the rest of her. When that didn't work, he sat dumbfounded for a moment. But he turned, to look at the others. Seeing his Melez standing there, he gave a sob and jumped up, dragging her into his arms and holding her close. "You're here...you came back to me..." he whispered. He hadn't thought he could cry any longer but seeing her real and there made him cry all the harder. But happy tears this time.

Khaalida turned and her jaw joined the others' and she hugged him that much tighter. She was back!

"Of course I came back," Melez said breathlessly as she closed her arms and wings around him. "Always and forever my love," She turned her head to bury her face in the crook of his neck. For her it had been far too long. "I'm sorry I left," She began to cry out of happiness and for all of the other emotions that ran through her. "I didn't mean to, I-I was just so tired,"

If anyone looked to the mouth of the cave, a male demon stood, leaning against the wall there, a smile set in his jaw. His short messy brown hair topped his thin frame, his piercing blue eyes grinned as well. His work here was done, though, there was one thing he still wanted, but he'd get that later.

Nathana spotted the unfamiliar scent on the breeze and caught a glimpse of the smiling demon before he vanished into a wisp of smoke.

Faolan smiled, hugging Khaalida close to him. Oh! this was fabulous! He'd have started dancing if he wasn't busy hugging the woman in his arms.

"No! Don't you be sorry. You have nothing to be sorry about. You fought so hard and are so brave...my beautiful shooting star," he said around the lump in his throat. "You're here...you're alive and with us...I'm sorry I wasn't there to help...he's gone. Melez, that monster is gone...he won't threaten you anymore! He won't threaten any of you ever again! We won...we're safe..."

Hecate had noted the strange soul and looked as well. She cocked her head, unsure what to make of him. He wasn't bad. He was...well...familiar. But she'd never seen him before. Melez there and real overshadowed it though and she forgot about the strange encounter.

Khaalida was so excited, she threw out any bit of worry she had and pulled back just enough to place her lips softly on Faolan's. She was so happy that she could've flown!

"He's gone?" Melez adjusted to look him in the eyes. "It's over? We, we won... We won!" Her face quickly lost her smile and she turned her gaze to the others. "Is everyone alright?" She spotted everyone but the dragons, and Khaalida's shirt looked the worse for wear, but aside from her and Stella looking a bit bruised, everyone seemed alright. "Jael didn't get to the dragons did he?" Her eyes focused on Azazael's again.

Nathana moved over to Hecate and put an arm around her. She planned to ask her about the man after the rejoicing. "No, he didn't return here," She replied to Melez's question.

Faolan responded to her kiss, his arms wrapped securely around her.

Azazeal nodded in agreement. "Drayce, Eona and the eggs are safe, as far as I know. They are still in the hatchery as far as I can tell. I think it was just Jael...and I'm going to se to him...Oh, Melez, I'm so sorry. I love you and am so unbelievably glad you are safe and here," he murmured, burying his face in her neck a moment as he shared that happiness through the bond.

Hecate smiled, snuggled into Nat. She took a deep breath, glad everyone was safe and home.
