Jack released his own spell, which hit the Guardian centre-mass. It didn't take long for Promethean Knights to start appearing, already firing as they teleported in. Jack raised his shields.

Didact huffed. "Fine, you've got me there." The Forerunner looked around as the explosions rang out. "That would be your friends." he muttered.

Sliuril raised her own shields. The Guardian's flight slowed, then stopped. Then, it turned around to face her. Parts of its body were already damaged from Jack's and her spells, but evidently it was still capable of combat.

"Yours too, now." Copper said with a smirk. "Either way, this Cryptum is spaceworthy, so we'll be flying out of here."

"And the others?" Glaurug wondered.

"Will be fine."

"Faith?"

"Sliuril probably left her behind, the air here isn't remotely breathable."

Jack muttered something about 'too old for this' and 'long days' as he began charging up a Vortex spell. It was a reliable fallback in almost all situations. Such as when facing down a giant metal construct on an alien planet outside of the Milky Way.

Yep. he thought as bolts pinged off his shields. Just as reliable there.

"Oh." Didact blinked. "Great. I'm assuming, what with you being the creator of a lot of this technology and all, it won't take you long to override Cortana's control?" he asked.

A faint blue aura rippled over the Guardian's form. It stilled for a moment, before charging towards the two. The guns along its body began to glow, building their charge. The Guardian fired a volley of two dozen guns well over the MAC-class, rounds tearing into the soft ground.
Sliuril dodged the half dozen that had been aimed at her, shooting out another volley of missiles. She knew they would have to use more powerful spells if they really wanted to save energy, but she didn't have enough spare magic to charge two spells at once.

Not unless she drew on the Key, anyways.

Jack propelled himself far to the side, away from Sliuril, so that the Guardian would have to divide its fire. With that, he fired off the spell and, not waiting to see if it found its mark, launched himself into the air. Once more, he began drawing on the energy of the Sword and the Mask to start charging up a bolt of pure energy. Seeing as he also needed to maintain the shields around him, it would take him longer than was ideal, given the situation.

Sliuril once again dodged the Guardian's fire - she was partly amused to see the Guardian beginning to focus it's fire on her. With the Promethean Knights unable to enter the fight, it gave Jack more than enough leeway to charge up his spells. Sliuril was forced to bring up a shield on the Guardian's next volley of slugs. She felt their impacts against her shield with a shudder - Copper had clearly designed these with her siblings in mind. If she'd managed to create an armada of these...

Sliuril dropped the shield and plummeted. She was followed by several missile-like objects. Taking care not to swerve too jerkily, she turned to rush towards the Guardian's massive form. A second before she could crash, Sliuril sharply jerked to the side. The missiles lost track of her and slammed against its metallic body, doing more damage than Sliuril's usual attacks would have. I should not have been able to do that.

Jack saw that Sliuril was diverting fire and decided to take a gamble for the sake of speed. He diverted almost all the energy from his shields to the rapidly growing orb of light in his hands. The magical drain was brutal and, already, he was starting to feel slightly tired. On the upside, he was very nearly ready to fire. And, seeing as it would be nearly impossible to miss or otherwise fail to destroy the Guardian, he reckoned that he may as well put everything he had into it.

Sliuril spun in the air, hastily bringing up a shield to block incoming fire. Cortana seemed to be entirely focused on her, a fact she was thankful for - until she noticed that one of the Guardian's secondary turrets had just finished charging. And it was aiming straight for Jack. She watched, almost in slow motion, as the blast left the tip of the gun and blazed towards Jack. Sliuril was barely capable of bringing up a shield between the Jack and the blast in time, and she felt the weak cast shatter in an instant.

Jack saw the shot fire, but there wasn't much he could do. He fired off the sphere of energy he had collected at the Guardian and tried to dodge to a side, but too little too late. The shot hit him and he went flying back, tumbling to the ground. The demon hit the ground hard, throwing up a cloud of dust.

He groaned quietly as he felt bones beginning to slip back into place.

Sliuril turned from Jack, telling herself he was alright, and found the time to charge up a slightly more powerful spell. She targeted the Guardian's core even as the construct started flickering, struggling to stay aloft. The moment smoke cleared from Jack's attack and Sliuril had a clean shot, she realized it was pointless. The Guardian gave a groan of some sort as it's core began violently and explosively failing. Sliuril dropped to the ground by Jack's side, and summoned a shield over both of them.

The Cryptum hovered far away from the battle, Cortana watching it all through the sensors. She raised an eyebrow when she realized the Guardian had been defeated - that left only one on the planet, the one they Cryptum was already interfacing with.

Jack opened his eyes and sat up. "Why..." he asked, standing up with several audible cracks, "...do I do these things to myself?" he muttered. The demon looked around at the shield and nodded his thanks to Sliruil. With that, he silently watched the Guardian crash into the ground.

"An entirely valid question." Sliuril said, tilting her head with a mischievous smirk. "And one that is about to become obsolete." She added, nodding towards Crotana. The stolen chassis had been damaged during the blast, and was struggling to remain functional. "Think you have enough left to take on that?"

Jack half raised an arm in confusion and then dropped it with a sigh. "Maybe? I suppose it wouldn't be beyond me to gently tap something." He considered the statement and shrugged. Jack sent a mid-power bolt of energy at the chassis.

The chassis made no move to dodge - not that it could. The spell hit it head on and splintered it into thousands of tiny fragments. The bottom half of the chassis swayed for a moment in the windless atmosphere, before collapsing entirely.

"Well, this was a rather quick adventure." Sliuril chuckled, feeling the burning energy of the Key in its pocket dimension. "I'm glad the Cryptum Copper is on can travel through slipspace. Honestly, even with an anchor I don't think I gave enough magic to port us back home."

The Cryptum lowered it's ramp behind them.

"We've destroyed the other Guardian." Copper announced. "Are we all ready to leave?"

"Oh, you did?" Jack asked. "Lovely. And with that indeed quite short adventure over, I see no reason to hang about." he muttered, walking onto the ship. "Oh and, before I forget to mention it, er... congratulations, you're being rescued."

"Oh, really? Appreciate it." Didact said from his place on the ground, raising two fingers to his forehead in a mock salute.

"Oh, be quiet." Copper said, playfully thumping Didact on the head. "I don''t feel Faith anywhere - did you leave her back on Earth, sister?"

"Don't rile her up." Glaurug muttered, pushing himself into a seated position. "Any chance you could heal me, Sliuril? I still feel sore in places I didn't know muscles existed."

"Hmm?" Didact half-heartedly protested, raising an eyebrow at Copper. Then he heard Glaurug's question regarding Faith.

"You left your dragon on the same planet as Beowulf? The AI that's always trying to get others to murder me?" the Forerunner asked. After a moment, he shrugged and sighed. "Well, okay. I've never had to face a dragon hitman before."

Jack looked at Glaurug as another one of his own bones slipped quite loudly back into place. "Oh, you do, do you?" the demon deadpanned. "You poor, poor child."

Glaurug rolled his eyes. "Well I'm sorry, not all of us think that getting beaten to an inch of our physical lives is a proper pastime, unlike the two of you." He grumbled, gesturing at Sliuril and Jack.

"In that case, I'm sure you'll do just fine without my help. It's just a one-off occurrence, after all." Sliuril retorted. "And you may rest assured, Didact, that my dragon will see no reason to kill me."

"Oh, please. Take it from me, you're not living until you're dying." Jack told Glaurug. "Now, about getting back to Earth...?"

Didact gave Sliuril a very small smile and then stopped when he realised it was wasted under his helmet. "Don't take this the wrong way, but I wasn't so much worried about you as myself. I'm... very nearly positive he'll have come up with at least a few new ways to try to kill me by the time we get back." he said.

Sliuril barely glanced at Didact. "You are travelling with me. There is little distinction." She said, as if repeating a fact that everyone should have known.

Copper rolled her eyes and elbowed her sister. "You know he doesn't understand."

"Haven't you told him? You certainly had fun telling Naomi."

"She's one of us now, it's different." Copper huffed. "Unlike you, I don't go around disclosing crown secrets." She turned to Didact, even with one hand constantly on the controls. "Don't worry, I have no intention of letting you die. If you are in trouble, I'll be there."

The ship lifted from the ground.
