"Well. One could possibly make the argument that that's comforting." Didact nodded. Jack raised an eyebrow.

"It's not likely that you'll ever get a better guarantee of protection." the demon said.

"I don't require pro-"

"Oh, okay, you're one of those." Jack waved a hand dismissively. "I've little patience for people who think they can protect themselves better than gods can."

Didact raised an eyebrow, about to argue. Then, he stopped himself and turned to Copper.

"Thank you." the Forerunner muttered. With that, he turned to look pointedly at Jack, who shrugged.

"Honestly, it's like having to teach a kid manners."

Didact decided not to respond.

Sliuril rolled her eyes. She felt that it would have been pointless to voice her agreement with Jack's remark - they were entirely true, if one were to be truthful. Copper might have been the Forerunner's god, but it wasn't as if she owed a non-worshipper her protection.

"At any rate, how long will this ship take to reach Earth?"

Copper shrugged, even as the Cryptum entered Slipspace. "A few hours. There aren't the fastest things, and its speed is obviously less than a Guardian's."

"Very well." Jack nodded and sat down with a sigh. Didact hesitated for a bit before he silently followed suit. After a moment, the Forerunner produced a small disc from somewhere on his armor and began spinning it in between his fingers with his eyes closed, head reclined back against the wall.

((Missed the notification somehow.))

It only took a few minutes before Sliuril had gotten bored. She was vaguely aware that she'd been in more banal situations before, but having nothing to do for a few hours without Faith there to entertain her was a bleak prospect.

"So, the Key." Copper prompted. "What are you going to do with it?"

Jack looked to Sliuril, curious. Perhaps he himself didn't appreciate the full importance of the Key, but he knew a lot hung in the balance. Didact didn't move, nor did he stop twirling the disc, but he listened carefully as well, wondering how much he still needed to figure out about these people around him.

It took Sliuril a few moments to answer. "Get rid of it, why?"

Copper would have choked on some water, or spit it out for dramatic effect, if she could. As it was, she couldn't, so she grudgingly settled for giving Sliuril a Look.

"You know you have to present it to mom and dad sooner or later, right? That things probably bonded to you already." Copper said.

"We don't know that. And I haven't touched it, really, so the game is still in play."

Copper raised an eyebrow. "Sister, you've been glowing this entire trip. Trust me. You've won."

Jack shrugged and settled back with his hands behind his head, not wanting to get in between siblings. There wasn't much input he could give at the moment. At least none, he felt, that would be greatly appreciated.

"Hold on, this Key is a... what significance does it bear, again?" Didact asked from the floor, not even bothering to open his eyes as he asked the question. The disc blurred between his fingers.

"He who holds the Key, holds the world." Copper and Sliuril answered at the same time. They sounded to be reciting from memory, syncing down to the millisecond. "You should be aware of the Throne that my parents use to govern." Copper began explaining. "They don't want to hold it forever. That's where this world comes in. The seven of us - me, Sliuril, that black dragon you saw and others - we're supposed to go looking for the Key. Whoever gets it first becomes the next Throne."

"Ah. So you're all locked in a constant competition and the winner gets to rule the world?" Didact asked. "Total power and all that?"

Finally, the Forerunner moved, looking from Copper to Sliuril and back.

"I feel so sorry for you." he said.

Jack gave a small huff of laughter from across the room.

"Yes." Sliuril said, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Total power and everything. Don't feel sorry, it's just the way things work."

"But seriously, what are you going to do with it? You know you can't just hide it, mum and dad would find it eventually."

"Jack, I don't suppose you want the Key?"

"You can't give it to him, that'd be an interdimensional war right there."

"I would have said yes if only for the inter-dimensional war, but it would appear that someone lacks a sense of fun, so..." Jack shrugged, rolling his eyes. "The Key is your problem."

Didcat thought that it would probably be inappropriate for him to contribute to the conversation. He felt that the matters being discussed (far too casually if he was any judge) were a bit beyond him. However, there was a burning question that he needed to ask.

"So, how would the Throne transferring to one of you... change things?" the Forerunner questioned, cocking his head inquisitively.

"Well, this world would end, for one." Copper replied without batting an eye. "The Throne changes the first world of every Cycle to a replica of the current holder's origin world." A small, please smile settled over her face. "You would have loved to see Symposium. It was everything the Forerunner's idealised given form. A pity we reached our quota so soon, but what's done is done. I'd like to see it again, honestly."

"There's no way to stop the change." Sliuril added. "Rulers of previous Cycles have tried, and failed. The Throne won't budge on it."

Didact raised an eyebrow. "There would appear to be something fundamentally wrong with that, I just can't quite put my finger on it." he said.

"I wouldn't worry about it too much." Jack told him, stretching his arms above his head. Didact glared at the demon.

"It's all very well for you, you can just head back wherever you came from, can't you?"

"Hey, doesn't that Mantle of Responsibility thing demand that you try to do something to stop this?" Jack asked, his voice making it abundantly clear that he was smirking beneath the Mask.

Didact continued to glare and then gestured towards Sliuril and Copper. "What, stop them? You first, I'm comfortable in my current plane of existence."

Jack shrugged. "It would have been amusing to see you try."

Didact settled back down and closed his eyes again. "Well. This is all quite unfortunate."

"Either way, it won't come to anything anytime soon." Sliuril said, trying her best to sound firm, if only to keep Copper quiet. "The Two can't sense the Key itself, so as long as I don't touch it nothing has to come of it."

"Keep telling yourself that." Copper snorted. The ship shuddered as it exited Slipspace. "Also, we're almost there." She tapped a few inputs into the controls, and an external feed popped up. The mountain they had left Faith and Beowulf in was on the other side of the world, but they were about to enter the atmosphere. "See for yourself. ETA to Didact's Cryptum is ten minutes."

"Good." Didact nodded. "I can give you guys a ride back to... wherever it is you want to go." he muttered.

Jack tapped the side of the Mask, thinking about all that had been said. "I must say, it certainly is useful to be largely indifferent to things such as this. Every time there's a major shift in this dimension, just retire to the Void for a few thousand years. Convenient for all parties involved."

"..." Sliuril raised an eyebrow. "I don't suppose Faith and I would be welcome to spend a few years in the Void?" Though now that the idea had been presented to her, Sliuril supposed she could always just find an empty world for a few thousand years. It wouldn't be too hard, she would have Faith for company, and she'd be able to shirk he responsibilities for quite some time before the Two would have been bothered to go looking.

Jack shrugged. "I don't imagine that anyone from the Court would object to that. Well... Death might complain a bit, but he complains about all Immortals." he chuckled.

"Excuse me, Death?" Didact asked, tilting his head. "The Death?"

"You really don't know a lot about us, do you?"

Didact spread his hands, palms up. "What, am I supposed to?"

"I mean, given that you actually had a patron goddess..." Sliuril said, tilting her head to indicate Copper. "Honestly, were all Forerunners this clueless, or just you?"

"Don't be so hard on him." Copper grumbled. "He's been stuck in a prison ship for several thousand years-"

"All the more reason to turn to religion, no?"

"Just me. Also, a point of refutation. Regardless of my religious views, now that I know she exists, there's no reason to believe in her any more, right? I mean, I don't believe in doors or walls. They're facts. And I lost my faith in people a long time ago, so I don't believe in her in that regard either." Didact shrugged. "No offence, of course, you seem like a great person and all that." He added, inclining his head towards Copper.

"By the King, can we kill this one?" Jack asked.

"Have at thee, card boy." Didact muttered.

"Please don't." Copper muttered. "We'd both lose."

"She's right." Sliuril said with a giggle. "You'd both lose, really badly."

"Hey, could you drive to to Lambyang? I think Sliuril is headed to our location and I'd like to meet her halfway." Faith said.
