"Quite well." Sliuril replied. "I was on the groundside task force. Are you saying you replicated your planetwide EMP radars?"
"Yes. And they're portable."
Sliuril's face tried to contort into three different expressions, none of them pleasant. "Are. you. kidding. me."

"Yeah, just assume I have no knowledge on the topic whatsoever." Jack said.
"I understand the words but they're just not coming together to make any sort of sense." Didact said.
"Yeah. I heard the term 'planetwide EMP' and I don't like it." Beowulf said.

"And you hid these Guardians... where, exactly?" Sliuril prompted, not needing the explanation.
"Oh, just within the crust of several planets."
Faith snorted. "Aunt Copper, honestly, sometimes I think you're more destructive than Sliuril."
"Hey!" Copper argued. "At least I don't instigate genocide on purpose!"

"I don't imagine you'd have a swear jar." Beowulf offered.
Didact listened with the attentiveness of someone with a vested interest in the matter. "Policing troublesome worlds... how, exactly?" he asked.

"Only one part of that was usual by normal standards." Glaurug muttered. "And I think the EMPs, pulse emitters, and half a dozen beam cannons would pose quite the threat. Also, Guardian AIs are capable of interfacing with almost every wireless connection there is."

Jack, who had been looking at the Didact while he talked, turned to look inquisitively at Copper and Sliuril. "Hitting it repeatedly?" he suggested.

Copper shrugged. "Jack's suggestions had worked wonders so far, I don't see why not. Honestly, it's more the fact that the awakening of the Guardian would split earth's mantle that I'm worried about."
"...what."

"Is that not an issue that could have been raised earlier?" Didact asked.
"Not sure." Beowulf hissed. "EMP still sounds scarier to me."

"Well, yes."
" Repeatedly." Sliuril muttered, pinching the bridge of her nose. She could feel a headache coming in - curse her sister, why did she have to be such a piece of work?
"Well, yes." Copper replied once more. There was no change in her tone whatsoever, and she spoke the way one might discuss the weather in passing. "Why are you so worried, sister? This craft is easily spaceworthy."
"That's not the point."
"I believe aunt might be trying to say that the mortals would die en masse." Faith chimed in.
"Oh, well, yeah."

"So... do we care about that? I mean, like, really care." Jack asked the room at large.
"Yes." Didact growled.
"It's all the same in the end." the demon shot back, spreading his hands in a reasonable gesture. "Only, you haven't gone through what the rest of us have this month."
"Multiple ways of looking at it." Beowulf said. "It's like the age-old philosophical question. If you have three chairs and six kids, what do you do?"
"Build three chairs." Didact replied.
"Kill three kids." Jack said.
"Kill all the kids." Beowulf prompted.
"Kill everyone so that there'll never be any more kids." Didact muttered sarcastically.
Jack pointed at him. "I like that. How about going back in time and killing everyone so that there were never any kids?"
"That's the sort of thing that we Forerunners... discourage."
"Your society really has no sense of adventure does it?" Jack sighed.
"Tell me about it." Beowulf hissed.
"At any rate, I think we're in agreement that we can't let the mortals die and we should-"
"Well, actually-" Jack started.
"Shut up. Sit down." Didact growled.
Jack resumed the fixed smile, this time with his head tilted in a slightly inquisitive fashion.
"We're not going to leave just because we can. You guys, while all... clearly insane, are probably much better at this stuff than me." He said, addressing the others now. "How long do you reckon we have to stop Cortana?"

"Build three chairs." Sliuril agreed with didact.
"I don't care, it's not my problem." Copper shrugged. "But if it really were, I'd get the Builders to build more chairs, I suppose."
"I almost want to go back to working with Concord."
Cortana gave Glaurug a good thump for that.
Sliuril shrugged at Didact's question. "I wouldn't know. Sister?"
"What? I'd say we could get there now if you're willing to port us." Copper answered. "And that would give us a few hours' head start on Cortana."
"No." Faith muttered.
"How long do we have to get there? Only a few hours? But that's-"
"Halfway over the world? This is a chassis we're fighting against, sister. Just be thankful it can't portal there immediately."
Sliruil sighed. "Fine. Beowulf, how quickly can you get us there?"
"A day." Copper answered for the AI, "Even if we make speed modifications on the go, we wouldn't be able to get there in time."
"Personally," Faith added, "I agree with letting the humans die. Cortana is one of them - she'll be bound to save at least a few thousand, since she's clearly so bent on fulfilling this mantle of responsibility you Forerunners keep yammering about."

Faith generally grumbled, disagreeing. Glaurug shrugged.
"Not like we have a choice. Are we taking the ship?"
Sliuril looked to Didact, wondering what the forerunner would say.

"Oh, so you're leaving me here?"
"While it would break my heart to do so, I'm sure we'll be able to struggle on without your illuminating presence." the Forerunner replied.
"I feel betrayed."
"Turn your emotional subroutines off."
"No." the AI huffed stubbornly.

"Of course."
"Everything checks out."
"Let's just get this over with."

"If you must." Jack muttered, looking away from the Didact for the first time since he'd been told to shut up.
"Oh, do as you please." Beowulf grumbled. "Don't mind the AI."
"Yes, no one asked you." Didact snapped back.

"He has a point." Faith muttered.
Sliuril muttered something under he breath, something the others couldn't exactly catch. There was a whisper of power as she spoke, a whisper that grew into a roar. Strands of greenish gold magic whirled around them and it turned deafening-
They reappeared in a rocky mountaintop, and Faith growled, shifting her wings uncomfortably. The air was thin and the chill dug into their bones. Glaurug shivered, and Sliuril and her sister shrugged off the cold.
"Welcome to Mt. Sinai." Copper muttered. "The console should be around here somewhere. I think."

Jack chuckled. "I'll consider it a favour if somebody ports Didact again." he said.
Didact glared daggers at him. "Okay. Console." the Forerunner began looking around.

They looked around. There was nothing that could obviously be a console, or any variant of it that Faith could call one. "Are we sure this is the right place?"
