Finally the little Growlithe had an idea. It wasn't a big idea, and
it wasn't even close to the sort of birthday present she knew Nessy
deserved, but it was all she could do. Sitting down at the table,
she took out a pencil and began to write, "Once upon a time there
was a strange, lonely little Growlithe..."

The Growlithe knew Nessy loved art, so she tried for many hours to
do some art of their favourite characters, but she just couldn't
get it to look right. Panicking, she realized that if she took too
much longer Nessy would think she had forgotten about their
birthday.

She knew Nessy was collecting fire gems and tried finding some for
her, but she didn't have much luck. She then thought perhaps a gift
of nuggets would be good, but her pockets were empty.

One day the little Growlithe realized that it was Nessy's birthday.
The Growlithe thought and thought about something they could do
that would show just how much she appreciated Nessy's friendship.

The little Growlithe never could figure out why Nessy wanted to be
friends with her. She had grown up believing she was rather useless
and pathetic, but for some reason Nessy only ever seemed to see the
good things about her, things the little Growlithe could never see
in herself.

And from then on the two pokemon became good friends. Nessy always
looked out for the Growlithe; cheering her up when she was sad,
sticking up for her against mean bullies. They listened when she
needed to vent, and never minded when she got upset or stressed
out.

"Well, I think you're a really nice, kind pokemon, and you deserve
to have friends."
The Growlithe looked at Nessy, not quite believing what they were
saying. "Well, if you really want to hang out with me, then I guess
that would be ok...'

The Growlithe looked at Nessy, confused. "But why would you want to
hang out with me? People don't normally want to be friends with
me..." Nessy smiled kindly at the Growlithe. They could see the
kind heart hidden under the sadness, and wanted to help her feel
better.

"Oh, I'm no-one special, I'm just me" replied the Growlithe.
"Well, JustMe," said Nessy, grinning at their own dad-joke, "you
really shouldn't be travelling on your own. How about we team up?"

Eventually they made it to the pizza place, and after placing their
order they sat down at a table. "I'm Nessy by the way", said the
ghostly Charmander, "what's you name?"

The ghostly Charmander wouldn't take no for an answer and led the
Growlithe to a little town called Emera. The town was full of all
sorts of different pokemon, and the shy Growlithe got very nervous.

The ghostly Charmander gave the Growlithe a friendly smile, "I
didn't mean to scare you that much," they said kindly, "I was just
joking around. Are you hungry? I know a place that does great
pizza!"

One day the sad little Growlithe was walking along when all of a
sudden a shiny ghostly charmander jumped out from the bushes,
shouting "Boo!" The Growlithe got such a fright that she froze.
