So... When and Why would I feed a berry to your pokemon (instead of just training with it):
a) If they need to evolve. AKA: Magikarp, yes. Gyarados, no.
b) When they have been nicknamed. If they got a name, they must mean something to you, so if you care, I care. AKA: Louis the Gyarados, yes. Random unnamed gyarados, nope.
c) Must NOT be a shiny. Effing things. I like them but uggh, just no. All-Shiny-Parties feel like you're bragging and I don't like it. I don't even care if it it's Nikki the Magikarp, if it's shiny, then there's no berry for you.
