What is the silver nugget thing I get during interactions? I see it along with the coins and the game center chips, but I'm not sure what it is (I haven't played in a long time).

They are Powerorbs. You can use them to give EHP to your eggs / Exp to your Pokemon, to hatch them faster / level them quickly.

They are used on your eggs/Pokemons page.

I think you are talking about this :

That's a Powerorb. It is randomly generated by every Exp. share you own when interacting with Pokémon. Powerorbs can be used to raise your own Pokémon's EXP and your egg's EHP.

One powerorb can be used to increase a pokemon's exp. points by 10.
One powerorb can be used to raise an egg's EHP by 1

You can use it by clicking your pokemon or egg (to enter its page) and clicking on 'use' button after selecting number of powerorbs you want to use under the Powerorbs section.
