If the girl… Scarlett. It hit him. In the school files. Anyway, if Scarlett was 126, how old was her mother. And who was the father?

Queen Lily chuckles again. "Older than I care to remember counting. If I had to ballpark it though, I'd say.... 1,500 years, give or take? Kitsunes usually live for about 3,000 though."

"Why thank you!" She gives a mock bow. "But it's simply a matter of how Kitsunes age. They don't look 'old' until they're about 2,500 years or so. Comes from the Drayken linage."

Queen Lily glances at a clock. "I suppose while we're waiting, I can give you a story..." She sits down and takes a sip of tea.

"Once, a very long time ago, only Human and Dragons roamed the land, along with all the other small creatures that live here. The Humans and Dragons coexisted peacefully, although they didn't necessarily seek one another out. However, one Dragon fell in love with a Human that had saved her from some hunters. They weren't compatible, and she was afraid he wouldn't love her, so she went to a witch and traded some of her prettiest scales for a human body.

"She still had her wings, but they were small, and she had a tail to match, but she was so happy to have a human body that she graciously took this new form to follow the man she fell in love with. Thankfully for her, the man didn't mind her tail and wings, and thus the first Drayken was born. Some of the other Dragons followed in suit, but most kept their own forms.

"Nekos came next, as a result of a curse from another witch, 10,000 years later. There was a cat who loved to terrorize the village, and to teach him a lesson, she gave him a human body. The Neko was forced to help the witch repair the damages he had caused, and over time, the two fell in love.

"Werewolves were also a result of a curse, but no one knows where Fryverns came from. However, the combination of a Fryvern and a Drayken created the Kitsunes, who are now the royal family. The resided over both magics until they split into the two kingdoms during the Magic War."

"Yes. I remember the Magic War - I mean I didn't experience it, but my grandfather was a leading general for the Light Kingdom." He paused. "Is this one witch doing the cursing, or many?"

Atticus nods. "If you do know anything about curses, I know this may be asking a lot, but could you help me? I don't know how, or if this is even a curse, but I can't survive more than three hours without absorbing color from another living thing. Otherwise... I'm dead or in a coma."

Queen Lily blinks. Twice. Then she lets out a quick, sharp, two-toned whistle. A dark-skinned Neko materializes beside her and bows. "Yes, Your Majesty?" Queen Lily waves her hand at Atticus. "This is Najomi, our High light mage. She may be able to help you before we leave."

Najomi studies Atticus with careful eyes.

Atticus nods. "Uhm. My power is Color Manipulation, which just causes light shows and such, but for me to survive and do those light shows, I need to absorb the color from another living being. Just having my magic depletes my own store of colors, so if I go more than three hours without "eating" color, I'll go into a coma. My mother had this power as well, but she didn't have the side effect."

Najomi circles Atticus for a moment. "Where you born under a blood moon, by any chance? Likely not." She mumbles the second part, mostly to herself. "How about a Super Moon? A Blue Moon? Anything special with the sky or tides that day?"

"Just a normal new moon. And I think there were three tsunami's that day." He hesitates, knowing that he was about to reveal something. "I was born with this mark too." He rolls up his right sleeve to the elbow. On the inside, on the veins, a wilting rose shape appears next to a ticking antique clock. They look like tatoos. "I've always thought they were just indicators of my power or something, but I'm not sure about the clock."

Atticus nods and extends it to her, bracing himself. The ball of light was enrapturing. he couldn't stop staring at it.

Najomi grasps his arm firmly, but gentle. She watches the mark for a minute. "Believe it or not, it's actually moving.... Like, the hands of the clock are going backwards. Only 3 of the hours are marked though. Now sit still."

She clasps his arm with the other hand, the ball of light disappearing into his skin. Najomi's eyes go white before she closes them, humming.

"This place seems... sad." Shadow pulls out his arrows and splits them into two groups. "Here we go." He enchants one with a flashbomb spell and the other with a light spell. "Get ready to sparkle."

Atticus tries not to pull his arm back as she did her work. He closed his eyes and transported himself back to when he and Reina were just friends, his other hand gripping the locket with the carved butterfly.
