So I'm getting use to the various ways to catch pokemon, but haven't found the answer to this while looking around. This is more of a question to avoid any mistakes early on, but is there any need to keep common pokemon such as ones from the lab and have evolved for dex purposes? I just wanted to make sure there was no special use for them in the future as areas get unlocked that would make it a mistake to release now. Would there be better uses for them, such as global trades? Are they essentially junk and serve no purpose once dexed?

Depends, do you have their particular dex completed? It's important to be aware that the pokedex on PH works differently than in the original games, where the dex entry disappears after you cease to own an instance of that pokemon. (ex. you have only one tentacool, you release said tentacool, you no longer have the dex entry)

Certain pokemon can also be used for quests, like delibird, spheal, and vanillite, there's a quest during the Christmas event that requires all three, so if you get them, it could be useful to keep them around. It's a case by case situation. Would you like to keep them, or do you want to get rid of them the second you complete their respective dexes? Or do you want to sell your excess on the Auction House? Up to you.

Tbh, I have a heck ton of purrloin from my attempts to hatch a pharrloin. I like to keep them, just because I like having junkmon trade fodder. As for just random lowlifes-i mean common pokemon, I keep those too(if I can afford the box space) just in case I find a good GTS deal looking for a specific pokemon.
