Aoife took more and more dishes, until one remained.
A small plate of dessert.
Labelled...Lady Genya Mirej.
Aiofe sniggered.
"I'll leave this dish to you.
I gotta go.
After serving the dish, go to the Head Maid to check your next
tasks.
Toodle-oo!"
She left.

Alexander paused.
To throw on the floor or not to throw on the floor, that was the
question.
Oh no, there was a better option.
"You take it or I eat it." He crossed his arms angrily. "I'm not
feeding
her again."

"Eh." He shrugged. "Guess I'm done here."
He put the plate in the sink and popped the cake in his mouth.
Really, it's a miracle I'm still here already. Let's tempt the
fates.
He left the kitchen, making his way down the hall.

The feast ended.
Genya walked out of the hall, laughing.
She walked upstairs and into the Master Bedroom.
ALEXANDER REMEMBERED THAT HE HAD TO GO TO THE HEAD MAID

Alexander knocked on the door, waiting.

"Come in! Come in."
Called a frail voice.
It was the old woman.
"You've finished your tasks, I presume?"
She said, pursing her lips.
"Well done.
So, your next task is...
Ooh, Lady Genya again!
Seems like you behaved well, and she didn't ban you from seeing
her."
The old woman smiled.
"Your task is to sort out her bookshelf.
Quite tedious, I know, but the Lady is very generous.
She'll give you a reward, I think."

Alexander's head drew a blank.
"Um. I'm sorry, can I have another task?"
Screw
characterization. I'll be as polite as I can be to avoid seeing
her
again.

"Nope."
The woman shook her head.
"It's not that bad, dear.
The lady is very nice, and she rewards handsomely."

His gaze hardened.
"Assign someone else, please," he said quietly.

"I cannot.
I simply cannot.
Since you're new, you have to have these tasks.
I can't change anyone else's....I'm sorry."

Alexander scowled. "Assign me to another task for a newbie. Can't
you do that?"

"No can do.
Besides, the Lady won't talk to you, she's busy working on her
book."
The old woman smiled.
"The Lady loves that book of hers.
It's the only thing that pleases her, these days.
If something were to happen to it....well....I would pity the
Lady."
She sighed.
"Poor, poor Genya."

A hint of interest flickered in his gaze.
"A book? She's an author?"

The old woman nodded.
"A very good one.
See, if you go to her now, you could ask if you could read her
book.
It's a big one, green...and leather-bound, I think.
It's her pride and joy..."
The woman sighed.
"You have to go. Now.
That task is your final one of the day.
Please go and do it...and I'll tell Ms. Genya that you don't want
to do any tasks relating to her.
We'll try to change your tasks."

Alexander smiled a bit, unconsciously.
"Got it."
He stepped back, his hand briefly brushing his thigh pocket. Giving
a bow, he slipped out of the room and headed down the hall.
His latest product of thievery had a date with a few matches.

The hallway was silent, unusual.
The maids looked deeply upset.
A cloud of sadness descended on everyone.

He frowned despite himself.
Weird.
Coming to her door, he gave a few resound knocks.

"Come in."
Called a dull voice.
It was Genya, though, she looked different.
Her cheeks looked sallow, her hair limp.
Her eyes were red from tears.
"Just...go in there, clean the books up."
She muttered, and turned her back on him.

Alexander nodded briefly, stepping inside. He glanced around and
his eyes landed on the green book he'd left.
His gaze flickered.
It was open.
Uh oh.
Despite the lead that seemed to be filling his boots, dragging him
down, he walked towards the bookcases, even though it felt like
moving through quicksand.
