Daffy whimpered, snuggling up to Genya. "Big sister Daisy fell asleep in the snow and didn't wake up," she mumbled. "Is big sister Genya going to, too?"
Alexander's eyes flickered a bit. He didn't respond, just gave a very deep sigh and wrapped his arms around the tree. "We... just need to keep out of the snow. To avoid hypothermia..."
Alexander slumped against the tree. The girl began screaming now, wailing at the top of her lungs.
"STOP IT STOP IT, STOP IT WAKE UP WAKE UP!"
Her hands turned to fists.
She narrowed her eyes.
"Daffy. Please. Stop."
Genya stood up.
"I'll be back in a bit."
She whispered.
Genya walked off.
....
.....
Leaning next to a river, she attempted to calm herself by listening to the gurgling river.
She stared at her own reflection.
Tears dripped from her face.
Alexander ignored her, and instead checked his coat. It was ripped in various places from the branches, and the stuffing was spilling out. He was warm, of course, but goosebumps started on his arms regardless.
It was their salvation.
He intook a sharp breath. Their?
He needed to leave. He was viewing everything like it was-
Suddenly, he looked up. Daffy was sitting in front of him, cross-legged. Her face was red all over, her eyes large and puffy, but still beautiful. "Hi," the little girl mouthed.
He gazed down at her, and felt something large and ugly rise up within him.
A heartbroken cry started up behind him. He gritted his teeth and ignored it, stalking towards the direction Genya had taken-
And there she was, lying by the river.
Getting water, he thought. So, she's not entirely useless...
But his thoughts trailed off.
Was she crying?
"Don't have time for what.
Me?
Because I'm....
Useless?
A liability?"
She got up slowly.
"There are some things that you will never understand.
Or start to comprehend.
Like how much pain I'm in right now.
I'm not acting weak.
I mentally can't go on any further.
And pay attention to how I said mentally....not physically."
