Alexander stormed through the snow, memories flashing through his
mind. No! His teeth ground together. Why couldn't they just
leave him alone? Why couldn't he just-?
He glanced behind at the two girls following him and he felt his
shoulders relaxed. It was fine. Everything was fine. He knew what
he had to do-
Didn't he know from the beginning?
The girls wouldn't find him.
He'd leave tonight.

"We're not going anywhere," Alexander grumped. "Just trying
to get the hell away from this place." He gave her an
exceedingly odd and irritated look. "I'd appreciate if you could
shut that thing up. We might go faster."
Daffy was humming to herself, toying with the limbs of her doll.
She giggled as if it had said something and tapped it lightly on
the nose.
Alexander huffed and turned away, shoving his frost-bitten hands in
his pockets, stopping in his tracks and scanning the horizen.

"Okay!" The cheerful girl wrapped her arms around Genya's middle.
"Don't drop Daisy!" she told her seriously. "If she gets wet,
mommy'll be really, really mad at me!"
Alexander waited until they caught up, then resumed his pace, this
time walking alongside Genya. "She has a family," he murmured to
her. "Aren't you worried about where this girl comes from?"

He sighed a little. "Well, I guess we could ask the Red Cross...
But we really should get a look at her papers and figure out what
nation she's from. It could be a major risk to stay with
her."
