Alexander's tone softened a bit. "Okay. Wait here." He gave her an awkward pat on the shoulder, then narrowed his eyes to slits. "And if anyone comes, run like hell, got it?"

He gave her a half-smile and a salute and then turned and ran off.

It was Alexander. He stared down at her, no emotion in his eyes. "Up." His voice was quiet. There was still a rough edge, but it had turned raspy instead of harsh.
