In the distance, a structure was rising out of the dirt. Alexander signalled her forward.

Dust was everywhere.

Ash was everywhere.

Everywhere: silence.

She fell to her knees, and crawled further.

She coughed up blood again.

Her fiery hair fell onto her shoulders.

She rubbed the blood of her alabaster face.

The whole town was leveled.

But the worst part.

At the very center of town.

The pole where their flag was hung. The pole that sat in the very center of the park that Alexander had gone to, back when he was litte. The park where picnics were held, where Kindergarten classes visited as a field trip.

At the top, a flag that was very much not there's was held.

"We need to get out."

"That's better." He turned away from her, his eyes beginning to scan over the town. "Okay, so, I think that we should be able to scrounge from some basements. They're not technically shelters, so the soldiers won't be checking them, and they might have some surviving materials."

He grimaced. "Maybe we can get some proper first aid equipment too..."

He sighed and shifted a bit closer. "Okay, look," he tried to make his voice as gentle as he could. "We're alive. We can make a difference. We just have to get some supplies, and then we can leave and rest, okay? If you want, you can hide while I find us some stuff. Fair enough?"
