She closed her eyes, and hugged Daffy.

A tear ran down her face.

After a few minutes, she fell asleep.

"I can't promise that," Alexander whispered, once he thought she was fast asleep. He turned to face the rising moon, his mind a torrent of emotions. What... did he want to do? What did he have to do?

Daffy sat up, stretching. Another bright new day! She smiled at her big sister Genya. "Morning, big sis!"

She giggled at her older sister's snores. "Wake up, silly!~" She nudged her in the side.

And then she noticed something very wrong.

"Where's the mean boy?"

"What happened?" Alexander was standing in front of them, his arms full of kindling. "Is Daffy...?"

"Mean boy!" Daffy cried.

Alexander watched, bemused, as Daffy tore loose from Genya's arms and ran up to hug him around the legs. "Uh, hey, kiddo. Is something-?"

"He's here, big sis! He's here!"
