They'd found a fairly decent grove of trees which sheltered them from the snow above. Alexander had started a fire using dry wood, and they were now sitting near it, their packs off to the side.

Daffy curled up in a ball next to it, not moving, just giving small whimpers from her tiny frame.

At last, Alexander spoke. "I've figured out our game plan," he said. "We need to head to this port-" he tapped it. "And make our way to Biasier. There we can circle around the bay and make our way to the East. Hopefully, the Caovo empire won't have taken over there."

His voice was flat, methodical. He was laying out the facts.

"We can't go on like this forever. We need shelter. Warm food. And the kid's sick. She's going to die if she stays in the cold. I'd give her maybe a few days."

"You should get to sleep as well," Alexander said quietly. "I'll keep watch. Wake you up if there's any trouble. I promise." But there was something else in his voice. Something that told her he wouldn't be there if she woke up.
