Persecuting Euphoria

Prologue

(This story is written for A_BrokenAngel!)

Persecution.
It’s a word that he has heard many before. A word that he has been subjected to his whole life. A word that…he thought he’d never be released from…and because of it, he’d never be able to seek happiness…
Until now.

A Mew was just floating around in the cave, fussing over a Mewtwo who was doing his very best to reject the help that the Mew was attempting to give. Deep down though, the Mewtwo really did care, he just didn’t like showing it.

“Opal! Opaaaal!”

A cheery voice could be heard at the front of the cave. The Mew, known as Opal turned around, hearing the voice. The Mewtwo quickly took the chance to slip off.

“H-Hey! Get ba---” Opal started before sighing and doubling down on a laugh. He’ll catch him later. He always has and he always will. He put on that smile that he greets everyone with. In truth, it was a false smile. He was just…never happy with himself. He never was. He had one goal in life and he had failed in almost off of the attempts.
The key word being almost.

As soon as Opal saw a familiar Lucario running down the cave towards him, the false smile was quickly replaced by a real one. This Lucario was one he was able to bring happiness to. And one who managed to do the same back.

He waved cheerily, and was immediately swept up in a hug.

“Yung! You came to see me?” He smiled as he nuzzled him.

“I made that promise to see you as frequently as I can, right? Even though I’ve moved up to Luminia, that won’t change.”
The Lucario known as Yung chuckled and gently nuzzled him back.

“I genuinely appreciate it…you know that right?” Opal murmured in response.

“I mean you could always make one of your patented bubbles in return.” Yung joked.

But before Yung could say any more, Opal had tripped him over with a gigantic pink bubble and both of them tumbled onto it.
“…I was going to say you didn’t need to do it.” He laughed.

Opal giggled as well…before he felt a small sadness in his chest. Something that had be plague his thoughts recently.

“Opal? What’s wrong?” Yung asked. He could sense the thoughts of others after all. No one can lie to him.

Opal sighed… “…can you listen to me for a bit? I…just realized it. I truly am thankful you’re here. Because…I realized I really needed to bend someone’s ear a little.”

Yung blinked. “But of course! Anytime! But this must be serious…”

Opal nodded. “I…just wanted someone to know…what I’ve been through…”

Yung blinked again. “I know to—”

He was immediately cut off. “You don’t get it…let me tell you…and then you’ll understand. You might be one who can get me…”

And with that, Opal started his tale…

Chapter 1

A human who had been turned pokemon long ago. A human who lives to bring happiness to others. A human who loves seeing smiles on the faces of others…

Cast into the pokemon world, during a time where humans were associated with the coming of disasters.

He did his best after all. He always has done, and will do. What unfortunate luck that he doesn’t know his predicament…that he cannot reveal his identity as a human to others at all.

Seeing how rescue teams can bring such happiness to others, he joins one without hesitation and is rescuing others left and right. Due to his transformation into a Mew, he had become a truly valuable member to the rescue group he was a part of. For the older ones, more sickly he rescued, he does his job succinctly, for the younger ones, more terrified, he plays hero, to bring them ease. Even managing to develop a catchphrase of sorts.

“Freedom…Chaos…Transformation…Future…Mystery…I am Mew.”

Of course, that’s what introduced himself as. His real name was something else, his guild members knew. Everyone knew… The famous rescuer, one to bring smiles upon many. The hero in fuchsia, his name was well known. A rising star who had appeared out of the blue, and one to bring happiness to the entire town.

He had quelled a fight between an Excadrill and a Dugtrio, who had been terrorizing the town with their earth-shattering battles. The duo became friends and then befriended Opal in turn

He beat down a Skarmory….using only his charm and his tiny hands. And to think this Skarmory was well known for terrorizing unsuspecting merchants.

He managed to gather food, and by some miracle, managed to feed an entire village using a single loaf of bread. Granted it was a large loaf but even so…

It’s even said he managed to go toe to toe against a Suicune, though they were battling for fun, and they got the respect of one another.

The future was really bright for him…at least that’s what it seemed.

There was still the matter that beneath it all…he was still a human. He had wisely made the choice of hiding this fact for now….but…

A day came when he couldn’t hide it any longer.

Chapter 2

It was a day like any other. Opal was just ready to have another day of offering happiness to others like he always did

However…there was one member of the guild who was jealous of Opal, and as such had done a bit of snooping. A pokemon with a personality to fit its appearance. Garbodor…

They were jealous of the Mew’s popularity.

They were jealous of his fighting prowess.

They were jealous of his looks.

And so….they began to snoop around, trying to find some dirt on Opal to completely wipe out his fame and fortune. It was lucky that Opal more or less has a pristine reputation.

So instead, they began digging for rumours…rumours that could ruin the Mew’s life. And eventually they found the perfect one.

The rumour that Opal could be a human.

They had no way of knowing it was true, and they would take their chances.

They began their work of writing all sorts of flyers, defaming the Mew.

On this very fateful day, Opal was flying into town to find the flyers flying everywhere. All of the residents were reading one.
When Opal entered, his happy expression turned to that of confusion, as everyone turned to face him.

“Are you…human?” One of the residents said calmly, but their was a hint of fear in their voice.

Opal was confused. How could they have figured out his secret? He couldn’t deny it…and that’s when a flyer hit his face and his blood ran cold.

Within moments, arguing erupted between everyone. Some defending Opal because just because he was human, it didn’t mean that he was capable of bringing disaster. Some verbally attacking him, calling him a heretic, or a snake or further derogatory terms.

Opal was silent during all of this. His happy world….has just been shattered to pieces. In the end, the voices of those defending Opal were drowned out by the voices attacking him. Rescue teams went against Opal, purely for caution.

In the end, Opal fled the town, with three pokemon who trusted him to the very end. And were willing to believe in him.

The First was a young Teddiursa, whose spunk and cheerfulness eclipsed them all. He truly believed Opal to be a hero, and believed that even though he was a human, he could do no wrong. His name was Kyle

The Second was a young Riolu, who had formed an especially close bond, enjoying playing with him every day that Opal came to visit. She had a very strong fighting spirit and likewise, was willing to defend him to the very end. Her name was Tenko

The Third and final was a middle aged Stoutland. A strong fighter in his days, and was one who supported Opal in his endeavors, A calm and serene spirit and fights only when necessary. His name was Devon.

They all fled to the deep sea caves upon Devon’s suggestion, to talk to one of the legendaries to confirm the truth behind the rumour, to see if there was any stock behind the rumours.

The legendary they had chosen to consult was Lugia, a guardian of the sea.

Chapter 3

Another day, another mystery dungeon. Diving into another adventure like every other day.

Except it wasn’t like every other day. This adventure was a fight for their lives.

They haven’t given up yet. They had hope brimming within their hearts, that one day, Opal’s name would be cleared and life would return to normal once again.

Despite all of the challenges thrown at them on route, they were making good pace. The first dungeon was relatively simple, even without Devon’s Thunder Fang

It was smooth sailing…

However, they were being pursued. All of them were being pursued. By the rescue teams who had taken it upon themselves to eliminate Opal.

Dungeons meant nothing to Opal, the four’s alliance proved to be very effective against whatever was thrown at them.

The first dungeon was cleared with ease…

The four of them sat down at a checkpoint area. They had managed to lose the rescue teams for the moment. For the first time since fleeing the village which they called home, they could finally had a rest.

Opal had a solemn expression. “You guys didn’t have to…follow me all the way out here….”

He was immediately reprimanded by Tenko. “Stop that! I chose to be here! I WILL clear you name no matter what!”

“Don’t you mean we?” Kyle said nervously

“That’s right poppet.” Devon said in his mellow voice. “We’re here because we chose to be here. We’re here because we believe in your innocence.”

Opal teared up a little. “T-Thank you…to think that a simple rumour could ruin someone’s life that quickly…”

No one had much of a response to that. They couldn’t as they soon heard the shouts of other rescue teams closing in. The four quickly got to their feet and dashed off, choosing to take one of the most dangerous dungeons in the vicinity, a dungeon in a whirlpool…

The four would come out batter and bruised, however their spirits hadn’t been broken. They knew that taking that path would deter so many rescue teams…giving them more time to rest.

What’s even better was that that was the shortcut to the deep sea temple where Lugia rests

The four of them flew to the centre of the temple

“Lugia! Please…”

A great torrent of water erupted and drenched them all, the great figure of Lugia would appear before them.

“Yes…? Oh…you’re the persecuted.” Lugia said, looking at Opal.

Opal said nothing.

“…for a false rumour.” Lugia mused.

“W-Wait! Does that mean…?” Tenko said excitedly

“Humans have no connection to any natural disasters. There never has been any humans in this world…I do have to wonder who wrote the myth…” Lugia said steadily.

“I-If we can—” Kyle started.

“Stop right there.”

A rescue team appeared behind them…and Opal’s blood drained from his face. They were one of the more renowned rescue group at the time…and now...

It was life or death.

Chapter 4

There was nothing more to be said. Opal stood there as his three friends threw themselves into battle to protect him.
Lugia also tried to help but was immediately paralysed by the Raichu which was there.

It was quite a long and bloody battle…Opal threw himself to protect himself after a little bit. Lugia could do nothing to prevent the battle as the rescue team utilised orbs, wands and their own moves to keep it at bay.

Lugia howled in frustration. “Why are you attacking someone innocent…in my own lair nonetheless! Even so, they couldn’t do anything to aid Opal’s group

The Raichu hissed. “So they’ve brainwashed you too…” it seemed as though they hadn’t taken into account that Lugia had lived much longer then any of them, and as such, know what myths were valid or could be discredited.

Then came the first casualty. Kyle was struck down, severely injured to the point there was no hope for him

“W-Why can’t I stand…? N-No! I…don’t want to die…”

Opal immediately ceased his offensive…his face horrified as he saw his friend being struck down. Someone who had nothing to do with him…laid down their life for him.

“K-Kyle….no!” Opal murmured.

It was about another half an hour before Devon was the next victim. All three of the rescue group had cornered him

“Mew, I did my best…it’s the end of the road for me.” Devon sighed.

“No! Not you too! Why!? H-Here! Take thi-“

“It’s over for me…I’ve lived a good life…tell Lilia I’m sorry….and…” He said as he was struck by an alliance attack, which proved fatal.

“…I’m sorry…I couldn’t protect you…to the very…end…” he breathed his last.

Tenko was looking distraught as she fought, losing two of her friends, as she was the last one to be cornered. However…
Opal flew in and took the attack for her as Lugia broke out of the bind that was holding them. In a rage, the Lugia caused the water to fly up, pulling the trio who had been there to carry out their mission. They succeeded…and it cost them their life in doing so. There was only one survivor out of the whole ordeal…

Tenko was kneeled over Opal, filled with tears. The attack he took caused grievous wounds. The trio that attacked them weren’t one of the strongest rescue teams for nothing.

“W-Why? I fought so you could survive…why did you…?”

Opal laughed ruefully. “Isn’t it obvious…? I can’t let you die a fruitless death like Kyle and Devon did…not for a life that has been condemned from the start…”

“You shouldn’t have given up like that! Lugia broke hold as soon as you took the attack! You should’ve let me be the diversion for a little longer…” Tenko sobbed.

Opal gently consoled the Riolu. “You have a long life ahead of you…It shouldn’t have ended here…”

He coughed and chuckled. “I-it’s alright…I forgive all of them…after all…well…I made many people happy…as long as they live on happily… it’s alright.”

His breathing grew feebler. “A-ah that’s right…in the end…I never really told anyone my name…”

Tenko looked at him through her tears.

“I-It’s…D-Drake….ah…Tenko…I’m sorry…”

He fell limp. He was no more…his tale, one cursed with misfortune, had ended there and then. He was to suffer no more…no more in this physical life.

Tenko sobbed…and eventually had to leave her rescuer behind. As long as she lived, she would never forget the debt she owed to him. She would leave and established a beachside village…one where a certain Lucario lived to this day before he moved to the sky kingdom. Well he had two homes. She would be known as Chieftain Tenko…the Oak Pillar who built her village and lead her village from her roots.

Her village would have a statue of Opal, who became some sort of a saint in the area. Saint Drake… one who always sought to bring happiness to others and was killed for all the wrong reasons. Tenko guided the faith that he would always watch over them, blessing their harvest.

Lugia never forgave the rescue team, nor would they forgive the rumour which caused this tragedy. They grew to love humans in the end…and was always willing to support them. Even when natural disasters occur at the time humans appear, they saw reason and looked into the cause carefully before reluctantly indicting them if necessary

As for the old village which ostracized Opal in the first place, it soon fell to famine. Some say it was retribution from the heavens, punishing them for killing an innocent in a witch hunt. Some say it was Opal taking their revenge from the grave. Regardless, rumours spread around as to why the village soon fell to ruin. Ironically, a rumour is what caused their end, and the guilt that was accumulated from the area never vanished. The Garbodor who thought up of the plan was killed soon after the incident, as the first casualty from the event after falling victim to a lightning strike, perhaps caused by a certain legendary.

Regardless…even though Opal died there and then…

His life wasn’t quite over yet.

Chapter 5

“Wake up…it’s time to wake up…Mew…”

He tossed and turned. He just chalked it up to his imagination to him hearing this voice

“Wake up…you have to…”

Opal definitely woke up this time. He looked around…he could feel himself. He had died right?

He could feel himself resting on something. It was hard…like the ground he died on. But it wasn’t that.

He floated up and then opened his eyes. There were clouds all around him, bathed in a golden light.

He looked ahead of him, bleary-eyed…was he in the afterlife? He had to be. That could be the only explanation.

He looked at himself…and he saw that he was slightly see-through. Yep, definitely a ghost.

He began floating forward, and he saw a glistening path started appearing. He paused, in surprise but continued on as he saw
the path appear, and began snaking through the clouds

He hummed softly as he floated in the clouds. This was a nice change…maybe. Was it a nice change? No one was relying on him. No one could judge him. No one could attack him…but he couldn’t make anyone happy when there was nobody around.
It seemed like forever…like a train journey through the mountains. He didn’t seem fatigued, no matter how long he flew…

Until…the path started snaking upwards. Stairs.

“A Stairway to….” Opal murmured as he looked at the stairs.

He then began to climb…well, he flew. He flew straight up to the top. He wanted to see what was waiting for him.
If this was Heaven…he hoped he could still make people happy here. And…maybe…he could live his afterlife in happiness. There was also the hope that the people would treat him nicely in return, but that thought didn’t cross his mind.
Up and up, further and further. He was optimistic, and he hoped he could find something wondrous up there.
He reached the top and…

“Welcome.”

Opal stared…he couldn’t believe what he was seeing as he found the origin of the voice that woke him up. The voice that guided him here. The presence of the one who watches the world…

Arceus.

Chapter 6

“What….is this…? Where…am I?” Opal said slowly. If anyone knew where he was, it had to be Arceus right?

“…the afterlife. But…your journey in the world of living is not over yet.” Arceus said, in a slow, regal voice.

“Huh?” Opal looked up at him confused. “But I died…”

“…I’m offering a…proposition.” Arceus said calmly.

Opal looked confused…he was hoping this wouldn’t turn out strange…or painful…or heart-breaking…or all three.
“I’ve been watching the world for now…and I have come to the realization that…I…have to keep order in the world.” Arceus said calmly.

Opal listened closely…he wondered where this was going.

“It is hard to keep an eye on the world and to pass judgement while keeping the line in all of the events in the world…as such…”

Arceus breathed in.

“I will bring you back to life…however, you must work for me.”

“Huh?” Opal looked surprised.

“To life…and to live like myself.”

“Immortality…”

Opal dwelled on it. He didn’t really want to live forever…however…all the people he could bring happiness to… to see the smiling faces of so many.

“All you have to do in return is to discard your humanity.”

The words hit Opal…he didn’t really much of his human life, he hadn’t thought about it that much. Not since coming here…should he…?

It took some thinking but…

“Alright. Fine. I’ll do it…so I can bring happiness to others once again…”

Arceus then roared. Something seemed to leave Opal but in return, he felt a power surge through him. A great power…he felt something alright…it felt good to be powerful…that power seemed to imbalance what was lost…

He was then given a white mask. Opal looked at it curiously. “Do I now have to conduct a ‘I am thou’ speech?”

Arceus looked confused. It seemed as though Opal had taken him briefly off guard. But that look of surprise passed within a second.

“And now…you are the first Fate…the fate of Judgement. You have the power to judge…and deem those who are worthy or unworthy. Show no bias, reveal the truth, and bring it to light.”

Opal was still staring at the mask. “A…Fate….”

“Happiness…it will come. No matter how long it may take, it will come.” Arceus said, in a vague fashion, in an attempt to address Opal’s concerns. But it was unknown whether Opal addressed it. Or heard it. Opal then looked up.

“So um…what now?”

“Guide everyone who died…to me. You will see…how my judgement works.”

"I...see..."

Opal sighed. More sadness...but if it could lead to happiness...

Opal flew off. To fulfill his first job. His destiny

Chapter 7

Opal flew out…and just floated about. He then noted he could fade out of sight, using his powers, which he made sure to do. He also made sure that he wasn’t wearing his mask…he noted that when he had become a fate, and when he put his mask on…his fur became completely white. White as the purest of snow. White for nothingness…and white for pure clarity.

The first days were relatively eventful. He had purposefully stayed away from his old town. After all, you can imagine the consequences that could occur if it was discovered he was still alive…

Despite flying all over the world…all the continents…He couldn’t find Tenko. No trace of her…He had wanted to appear to her.
He wanted to apologise…for leaving her in the first place…he wanted to see her again.

His job was busy at least… he was guiding souls to Arceus for judgement. But he was in charge of the more important souls. Souls that either completed more heinous crimes, or those who can be as pure as the blue sky above.

Regardless, it was quite a pressing job, flying around and all that, making sure that the departed souls receive judgement…

On one fateful day, he found a Victini, who had suffered a lonely death, deep in the harsh snowy mountains. To die all alone…that is horrible. Opal felt really sorry for the poor soul. At least he had Tenko…

He floated closer to inspect the body. And he pulled the soul out of the body like he always has done. That’s when he noticed…

“H-hey…are you…human?” Opal tilted his head, waiting for an answer

The Victini tilted his head. “F-Finally…someone out here…am I rescued…? Am I alive…?”

Opal floated, with a sad expression on his face. “I-I’m sorry…you didn’t make it…I’m here to guide you to the afterlife.”

The Victini had one hand on the other. “I-I see…” He had a timid tone to him. “I hope there’s company up there…please…take me there.”

Opal and the Victini began flying up through to the heavens.

“M-My name i-is…K-K-Kiro…” He murmured as he flew up.

Opal tilted his head… “I’m Opal. It’s nice to meet you…”

Soon Opal found the place where he was and put Kiro there. “Make your way through the mountains…you’ll be there soon…Don’t worry, you have my protection from afar.”

Kiro looked nervous as he floated along the path, much like Opal did. He floated up the stairs…

Arceus was waiting for him. “Ah…another human….”

Opal’s ears perked up. It occurred to him that Kiro had dodged the question earlier…

It took a while…Arceus was going over formalities until he reached the fated question.

“I will give you another chance of life…but you must abandon your human life.”

Kiro nodded without hesitation. “U-Um yes! I…don’t want to think of my time as a human….”

“An answer that has been noted, and your heart…has been tested.” Arceus then roared again, forming another mask as the Victini’s fur briefly turned white as snow. Before returning to normal.

“You are now the Fate of Love…you will work with Opal. Push fateful encounters towards their course…no matter how happy or severe the end result can be…”

Kiro was holding a bow now, along with his mask. “U-Understood!”

He floated over to Opal. “Are you…will you be my…?”

Opal put a paw to his mouth. “I understand…you won’t be lonely. Not on my watch.”

And to that, Kiro gave him a smile. The first smile that Opal had seen from him. But it was…so rewarding all the same. He missed being able to make someone smile directly…now he had the chance here…perhaps life wouldn't be so bad after all.

Chapter 8

Light always casted shadows. It was a fact that Opal had to accept now. No matter how much light he brought into the world, it would always cast some shadows, the brighter the deed…the bigger the potential for nefarious sabotage. Jealousy. Hate. Greed. The sins of the living cannot so easily be cleansed.

But that is what in means to live. Sometimes, there is such a thing as white despair. Black hope. A kind lie. A cruel truth.
As a fate, Opal got to witness all these concepts. As the fate of judgement, he had to bring forth life’s course, without hesitation.

The despair that some faced along the path, the joy that some found along the way. He saw both sides of the coin of destiny. And, no matter how much he wished he could bring happiness to all…he could do nothing about it. He was bound to this fate.
He was becoming uncomfortably numb to it. That was not to say that he had become emotionless; rather, he had just accepted his role and embraced it, no matter how much he disliked it. Kiro would be the same way. The years had gone by uneventfully…until…?

It was said that humans only came to the world at a time of crisis. Some humans never seem to make it all the way. Some humans came despite there being no crisis at all. Some have rejected the world and have attempted to find ways to recapture the life they once knew. Some have embraced the world fully, and have come to love the world…

Unfortunately, the next victim was one that never made it all the way. One that had their hopes and dreams snatched away from them at such a young age… A lost child who never had the chance to chase her dreams, or perhaps even find them. They were killed... in an unfortunate accident. An accident that was of no fault of others. One that was completely natural. In a way…it was fate.

One Zeraora down for the count. Killed because of a landslide. Once Opal saw the cause of death…it was as though he had been stabbed through the heart. He had no idea whether he caused this or not. His description of his role was to make sure events happened as naturally as possible…was this landslide his doing? It wasn’t the first time he might have made life go along in a way that would have caused deaths…but this was a child. He could see that.

He couldn’t quite see the victim yet…floating high up in the sky. But he knew. He knew someone had died. A child. He started floating downwards towards them… the mountainous forest was not easy to navigate, especially when he had to do it in a way that drew as little attention to him as possible. To ensure his presence was still hidden…

He flew over to the Zeraora, who was unconscious. Did they know they were about to die…? Were they completely oblivious…? He couldn’t tell, their expression gave nothing away.

He supposed he had to wait now…

“…Can you hear me?”
