Not sure if this is spoiler-y or not, but here goes:

I got a "Golden Pokeball" from Professor Rowan as a quest reward. He said that it would not be able to catch Pokemon. It appears in my bag under the Key Items tab, with the description "A gold shining Poké Ball, handmade from Professor Rowan. It is a symbol for his appreciation of your willingness to help."

My question is, does this actually do anything? Or is it basically just bragging rights?

Right now they don't have any function other than being on your Key Items, hopefully in the future an use for them would be implemented.
