A couple of tips from me, an almost semi-competent PoGo player! <3

1) The Silph Road is a great website with lots of useful information, like what hatches from different eggs or which Pokemon are rewarded for which tasks! You can also use it to connect with different Go players in your area!

2) Try to find a park near you and head out! Parks are great, since there's lots of space to walk around and usually there are quite a few PokeStops around!

3) Gas stations are a HUGE Pokemon attracter. I've never seen more Pokemon at once than at a gas station. Grocery stores also tend to be good for this, and anywhere you get a lot of people going through

4) Practice your curveball whenever you have some extra balls laying around! It's worth it to be able to curveball accurately as it's totally OP for catching and grants some extra EXP!

5) Something that may be obvious to some but wasn't to me when I first started, you only get the Nice/Great/Excellent throw if it lands inside the colored circle.

6) Obvious, but don't PoGo and drive! Besides being unsafe, Pokemon don't show up and driving doesn't register any miles.

Your tips are most useful thank you. I started doing many of these things and it helped me by so much! :D
