"Re-really?" Ellis asked, stuttering in surprise. She blinked a
bit, and glanced at the resting college student. A tiny smile found
its way to her lips, as did a tiny, almost invisble blush. Well, on
a normal girl it would be nice, but on her pale cheeks, it was
vivid.
"Would I lie?" Kain asked, raising an eyebrow. He noticed
her blushing, and smirked. "I've noticed this recently, but do you
have a crush on my brother?" he asked.
"Ummm, a bit of one..." Ellis whispered, looking at Alain
carefully. She hoped he was asleep, otherwise she was a dead girl.
Not that Alain would kill her, but she would probably kill herself.
She looked back at Kain with a shaky smile.
Kain was bouncing around in his seat, all excited "You need
to tell him." he said. "You'd be a great couple." he added, with a
wide, impish grin spread across his lips.
"I ca-can't! He doesn't like me back..." Ellis stammered, looking
down and blushing. Her voice had a bit of a sad tone, and she was
completely embarrassed. 'Kain ships us?' She thought
flusteredly.
"Are you kidding me?" Kain asked flabbergasted. "Ellis, he
took a bullet for you. You would've been sent to the emergency room
as well when his car crashed. He defended you from that gang of
hooligans." He sighed. "And you're telling me he doesn't like you?
You girls are so silly." he teased.
"He just likes me as a good friend. I'd do that for any of my
friends." Ellis said, her hair covering her face as she stared at
the concrete. She was pondering what Kain said, but thought that he
might just be a teenager. Thinking he knows everything, yeah right.
"I know my brother better than anyone else. We've been
through an awful lot together, I can confess it all now.. although
the subject is quite uncomfortable." Kain said, shifting around
awkwardly in his lounge chair.
"C-confess... everything?" Ellis said in a questioning tone,
looking up from her lap. Her hands were pressed together as she
tilted her head with confusion.
"Y-yeah.. like.. spilling the beans. Me and Alain haven't
been perfectly honest with you. I mean, we did get attacked by that
burglar, but have you ever wondered why Alain has so many scars?"
Kain replied, getting a bit nervous. "We did get attacked by the
burglar, Alain and me were sent off to the hospital. Our father
wasn't a nice man, and he was angry at us.. especially at Alain.
The burglar stole some valuables, along with our mother's
engagement ring. Our father drinked... a lot, so he took it out on
Alain.. our mother left soon afterwards to live with her
boyfriend.. we wanted to tell the police, but he threatened us.."
he continued to shift around in his seat. "One day, he attacked me
out of the blue.. Alain.. well.." he began to shake nervously
"Alain and my father got into a huge fight.. hence the scar on his
forehead.. and the scar on my arm.. after a while we couldn't take
it any longer.. and Alain called the police to take our father
away.. we moved in to stay with our Aunt.. we do visit our father
from time to time.. but.." he stopped. "That's about it.. I'm
sorry. I'm sorry we didn't tell you, it's been hard to trust.. to
trust anyone. But I know I can trust you." he smiled
weakly
"K-k-kain... I'm so sorry... Looks like both of our lives were
screwed up, your's more so... Did Alain ever tell you about my
story?" Ellis asked, tears coming. She was always such a crybaby,
especially with sad stories, true or fake.
"No.. although I would like it if you told me yourself. I
want to hear it from you." Kain replied "Don't cry, it's all in the
past now." he reassured her.
"Well... When I was in third grade, bullying began for me. I was
always the nerd, the outcast. All my friends forgot me as I got
pushed down in the popularity scale. They began to bully me, and
life at home wasn't better. My mom was abusive, and dad was gone
constantly. He thought life was great, but when he was gone, life
was hell. When mom died in an accident, Dad got a job where he
could stay home in Utah. We moved, and bullying came back up. Once
when I was walking home, they pushed me into the street, and I was
hit by a pickup. I survived, but I has scars and such to cover up.
We moved here with a job and school change, before I enrolled here.
Life's okay, but flirting and hitting on is non-stop. I never tell
Alain, though. I don't want him to have anymore pressure." Ellis
said, looking between the two brothers. Her voice was shaky and
almost broken, and clear tears streamed down her pale cheeks.
Kain hugged Ellis "If they bullied you they weren't good
friend, or any friends for that matter. Friends will stick by your
side no matter what." he tired to reassure her. "It can be our
little secret, if you don't want to tell my brother." he smiled,
releasing her from his hug.
"I'm not sure if he should know... What if he worries and makes a
mess?" Ellis asked, burying her head in the crook of Kain's neck,
her tears wetting his skin. They were mostly dry, until now. She
sighed, her shoulders heaving.
"He'll most likely worry and make a mess. It's in his
blood." Kain replied, half teasing. His clothes were almost dry,
although Ellis's tears wetted his skin he was "dry".
"Yes." Kain spoke a with a grin spread across his face. "I
think I should wake Alain, so we'll drop the conversation. If you
want we can talk about it later, or not at all." he stood, shaking
Alain. "Wake up sleepy head, the day's going to fly by without you
knowing." he said. "Fine." Alain replied, sitting up straight "So,
what happened while I was asleep?" He asked Ellis.
"Oh you know. The world ended and me and Kain got married." Ellis
said sarcastically. She had a serious look on her face, making
everything almost believable. Her lips were pulled into a
tight line, and there was seriousness in her eyes.
Alain didn't know what to say about that, so he kept his
mouth shut. Kain on the other hand, rolled his eyes and karate
chopped Ellis on the head "Bad Ellis." he scolded her. He didn't
hit her very hard, just enough to make it hurt for a small period
of time.
