Melez didn't even look up from her hands as she replied, her wrists
moving smoothly guiding the sharp blade between the fur and the red
meat of the beast. "I learned on my own... It's not exactly a skill
one could get from just reading... I had to live on the road, I
needed money, so I'd catch and kill my food, then sell the hide. I
had to get good or it'd end up with holes and be worthless..." Her
voice was a near perfect monotone as she was focused on the
dangerous utensil in her fingers. "I could teach you if you'd
like..." She paused mid cut to glance up to the woman before going
right back to her swift, but highly accurate cuts. The skin started
to peel back over itself as she freed more and more of the pelt
from the carcass. "Please turn it to it's side?" She asked so she
could remove the last bit and separate the back of the pelt.
Eona listened as she talked. "I normally keep what I kill and use
the pelts or my own stuff. Like blankets. They aren't pretty, but
they don't have to be. It's just me. Do you want this pelt to sell
or trade?" she asked, carefully moving the carcass so that she
didn't rupture anything and send guts spilling out. Once she had it
in place, she held down firmly but gently to help keep things
together. "I would really like to learn if you are willing to
teach." As she said the words, Eona realized that it meant that
they would be together for long enough to kill another deer. Or a
few. In any case, it would be for longer then a couple days. That
made her happy. She had a friend! She wasn't alone anymore and that
made her really happy. "Melez? Thank you for letting me help. I
don't know if you'll ever know what it means to me but thank you
very much for letting me in."
Melez made the final cut and removed the floppy pelt from the body
and set it aside, sticky and wet side up on the floor nearby. She
nodded as she listened to Eona explain her methods. "You made the
kill so it's yours. Consider it a thank you. It should fetch a
pretty price in town..." She said as she took the knife and sliced
open the membrane letting the innards fall to the floor in a
tangled heap wrapped around itself. "Do you want to save any of
this? The stomach would make a decent water bag, and the hearts are
rather tasty..." She asked as she severed the organs from the body,
moving the intestines aside, being very careful with them. "The
intestines, small and large are not to be messed with... If those
rupture they could completely ruin the meat..." She set the stomach
and heart aside as she'd use those if Eona didn't and she used a
little water on her hands to clean out the chest cavity. "Now we'd
just need to carve the meat off the bones." She said with a smile.
"The heart is tasty. I'll cook it up and make something special
with it. You take the stomach when we get it all fixed up. I'd like
for you to have something from it. I think I'll keep the pelt and
make something out of it. The antlers and such can be sold. Is it
okay if I go ahead and toss what we won't use or sell into the
stream?" she asked, meaning to toss the intestines. "Something in
the water will eat it. Or it'll land somewhere and become apart of
the land." She stood to go grab some containers from the wall to
put the meat, heart and stomach in.
Melez nodded as she began to make small cuts on the legs, then,
using her fingers she stripped the leg bones clean of the meat.
"You can certainly chuck whatever you're not going to use." She
smiled. "Thank you for the stomach! I've been meaning to get a
bag..." She had removed the meat from three of the four legs and
made the incision on the last before setting it down. "Why don't
you pull this last one? Get some practice in..." She smiled
comfortingly.
Eona grinned, tossing some of the parts deemed unusable. "Of
course! I'm glad you'll be able to use it." Then she moved in back
over and sat down in front of the leg. Mentally, she ran through
what she'd just watched Melez do and prepared to do it herself.
Normally, when it came to food, she just ate what she caught as a
dragon and that was that. So this was new and exciting. Carefully,
she started, copying Melez's movements and stripped the meat from
the bone. Then she set it into a bowl and sat back. "Alright,
should I clean this up in the stream and set it into a pot to start
cooking for lunch or should we store some of it?"
Melez watched, actually very pleased with how well her actions were
being imitated. "You're doing great." She'd say in a quiet tone so
as not to startle the woman. "It would probably be a wise idea to
clean it before cooking... We should dry the meat before storing it
though." She grinned. "When on the road you learn a lot of things,
drying foods is one of my many specialties. Especially meats." She
chuckled. "Now, we'll need a fire to cook, then the embers to dry
the meat... That should take a while though..." She began mentally
going over various things that could be done to the drying meat.
Could put some spices on it... Salt, pepper, paprika, oregano...
Could dice it... Could make it into strips and have it be
jerky...
"Oh, I'm not sure there will be much of it left after we've eaten,"
Eona said, blushing. A deer like this didn't last long. "As for
fire, I've got that covered. If you want to clean up here, I'll get
one started and then we can cook things. I've got lots of spices
too. I am not great with cooking but I can bake like no ones
business!" she said, grinning. She spent hours watching bakeries.
The big windows and the nice smells had prompted her to experiment
with baking on her own. And being able to control her fire, she
could get things at the perfect temperature every time. "Red velvet
cheese cake is my favorite thing to make."
Melez chuckled as she knew she had a big appetite when it came to
fresh meat. "My baking isn't the best, but I'm a great cook! My
mother was practically a magician in the kitchen... I'd sit next to
the kitchen door just for the aromas that would waft out... Oh it
was amazing... I've been able to recreate them if I have the right
ingredients... I'll have to make you a dinner at some point..." She
grins. "Red velvet cheese cake? I'm afraid I've never had that sort
of thing... We didn't really do desserts and I haven't been really
able to afford having them while I've been traveling..." She shook
her head. "Anyways, I've got the organs and the pelt, which I could
clean up and fix it right so you can have what you'd like out of
it..."
"It would appear we are going to have to have a night were we swap
recipes," Eona said, laughing. "We can go into town and buy what we
need. I don't splurge often but I think this is definitely a
splurge worthy occasion! We could go out today and make things
tonight for dinner if you want," she offered. While Eona loved her
treasure, she had no problem spending some here and there. With the
whole mine, she had no shortage of money. And she could bring down
big bucks to sell to the butcher. "That sounds like a plan. If
there is anything special you need for getting those ready, I put
all of my tools over there," Eona said, pointing out a stash of
tools against the wall. "I'm going to clean this then put some away
in the cooler. The rest I'll put into a pot to boil in a soup. That
way we can clean up while it cooks."
Melez nodded as Eona spoke getting increasingly excited. "Okay,
that sounds like a great idea! I have a perfect idea for dinner
too... Hmm, do you have a stove and two pots? If not I think I have
enough coin to afford them..." She was planning to make curry
chicken with onions which was one of her favorite things to make,
she only hoped that her host would like it. "Do you want any help
with the soup?" She asked while standing up, trying to not be dizzy
from the short change in altitude. Her eyes moved over to the
tools. Why so many? I've never even seen some of these... Like
she's a hoarder... Well, that's not to odd, dad would keep
everything... But he'd use the leftover items and such in spells or
rituals...
"I do!" Eona said, feeding off of Melez's excitement. The stove was
needed for cooking and sometimes the pots too. But what she really
liked about the pots were that they were shiny! Not treasure, but
they glittered in the light. And that was good enough for her. "I
think I should be okay. I cut some vegetables and things earlier so
it should just be putting it all together and over a fire," Eona
said, finishing cleaning up the last of the meat. "Oh! Do you want
something to change into as well? I am more then happy to clean
your current ones, but in the meantime, would you like something
clean to wear?" she asked, packing the meat up and standing to go.
(It would be amusing if Eona asked Melez if she wanted to borrow a
dress or a blouse that cut a little low in the back, just enough
that her wing tattoo would show. That would bring up the problem of
Melez trying to explain that she can't let it be seen...)
Melez's eyes widened as Eona offered to let her wear clean clothes
and clean her bloody outfit as she finished cleaning the meat.
"Some of your clothes? I-I think what I'm wearing is fine, besides,
my trenchcoat covers the bloody spots..." Her heart had jumped a
bit as the offer was made as the only offer of clothes was at a
discount price from a store. She stood up slowly steadying herself
on the wall as her head got very light and she wanted nothing more
than to lay down and sleep for a day.
"Oh, I didn't mean to offend," Eona said, hopping up to make sure
Melez was alright and didn't fall. "I didn't mean to say you're
clothes were bad or anything. I just thought that it would be good
to have everything nice and clean when we went into town. And I
wasn't sure if you had something in your bag. I didn't mean that
you would have to wear it for long, unless you wanted to. I thought
that if you wanted to clean those clothes, then wearing something I
had would be better then being in nothing. And I planned to clean
this outfit anyway, so I thought I'd offer. I'm sorry," she said in
a rush, feeling stupid for having asked. As she talked, her cheeks
got redder and redder. "I...I'm sorry...um...are you okay? You look
pale and dizzy. If you want, you can lay down back in my room. I
shouldn't have made you clean up the deer. It must have taken
everything out of you. You're still hurt. That was selfish of me.
I'm sorry," she murmured, holding the stack of bowls in front of
her like a shield. She wanted to dart off and hide but concern for
Melez kept her in place.
Melez smiled and nodded as she listened and waited for Eona to calm
down a little bit so she could get a word in. "I didn't mean to
make you think that I was being ungrateful, nor did I want to make
you think I would not be okay borrowing an outfit, it's just that
no one's offered for me to borrow clothes for a very long time and
I didn't know how to react just then..." She chuckled. "I offered
to help clean the deer, I wanted to help and not just be an
inconvenience... It wasn't selfish, you were simply obliging my
pigheadedness..." She took a deep breath which helped to settle her
head. "Moving around would be a good idea for me because if I lay
down for long periods of time I'll have to work to get back up to
speed... Thank you for the offer of your clothes," She took a quick
look down at her shirt realizing it had gotten some of the entrails
and fresh blood of the deer on it. "I do think i'll take you up on
that offer actually..." She chuckled as she took a couple steps
towards Eona offering out her hand to take some of the bowls.
"Where do these go?" She asked in her usual calm and not quite laid
back manner.
(Lol XD I think they are more often then you think! You are amazing
at RPing!)
Eona took a deep breath, drawing strength from Melez's calmness.
She smiled and nodded. "I am sorry no one has thought to show you
kindness. I know what it's like to be scrapping for things. So
whenever I can help, I try to help. Just because I can. I believe
karma will eventually come around and things work out. I think
we'll just bring these to the kitchen and I'll use what we need and
keep the rest in where I keep things cool. Then we can go see about
getting some clean stuff. Once we have that, we can go clean up."
She felt more relaxed around Melez then anyone she'd ever met. It
was nice and Eona was thrilled to have a friend. Or at least
someone kind and willing to talk to her. Passing Melez a few bowls,
Eona made sure they had everything before setting off down the
tunnel and back to the main opening of the cavern. Going to the
spot she'd set up as the kitchen, Eona set her bowls on the counter
and went to start a fire and get the soup cooking. She'd filled a
cauldron looking pot of water and had hung it over the fire pit.
"Would you like to cut up the meat into smaller pieces before we
put it in?" Eona asked, gathering the cut vegetables.
(I don't know about being amazing, but I like to think I'm
alright...)
Melez felt relief as Eona visibly settled down. "That's how I try
to be, except when you're like me you can't always help everyone...
There are the times that you either can't or shouldn't help
people..." She said the last sentence rather quietly before
clearing her throat and continuing. "Getting clean would be nice,
been a long while since I got properly cleaned. Two and a half
weeks since I used an actual shower or a stream..." She chuckled at
how ridiculous that sounded. Melez took the bowls in her good hand
and tucked them under her arm so she could carry them safely as she
followed behind Eona. She looked around at the so called kitchen
with wide eyes. "Wow... This is a beautiful kitchen... My mother's
was smaller, but was just as warm and welcoming." She smiled as
smells and memories flooded her mind before shaking them out as she
nodded. "I'd be happy to cut the meat up! How do you want it cut?
Cubed, shredded or strips?" She asked with a grin as she remembered
the various ways to cut meat. Each of those methods would give the
meat a different texture as it would cook differently. It would
also give a slight difference in taste as the juices would seep out
easier or would be retained.
"Some people do not deserve help," Eona agreed, mentally checking
out for a moment. Hands, strong and forceful on her arms. Bright
flashes and soul sucking darkness. People everywhere. People coming
to jeer. Shouting and cruel laughter. Pleading to be left alone.
Begging for scraps. She didn't remember much of being a slave, but
her young mind had definitely retained things that had scared her
most. Sometimes certain words triggered her to remember those
experiences. Eona shivered and visibly pulled herself out of that
train of thought. Not here. Not now. Taking a shaky breath, Eona
gave Melez a slightly shaky smile and said, "Whatever you think
will be best. If you want, we could do a few different cuts to make
it more interesting."
Melez turned to nod to Eona after she gave her the freedom to cut
how she pleased and her smile faltered as she saw Eona shiver and
seem to be in distress. She walked over to the shaky woman and
stared at her eyes, for the eyes is where one looks to check for a
lie, and quite often mental health. "Eona? Are you alright?" She
asked with a heavy dose of concern lacing her voice. "If I'm being
to intrusive please tell me... I don't want to be a nuisance..."
She wondered if it was her presence making Eona upset and possibly
making her mentally unstable. She'd heard tales of hermits who,
once introduced to people, broke down and went crazy. She was
silently praying that this wasn't the case, but she couldn't help
but worry about it being a possibility.
Eona looked up at Melez, her hands in her lap and tears threatening
to fall from her shiny emerald eyes. Shaking her head, she said,
"No, it's not you. I have really enjoyed having you here. It's nice
to have someone to talk to, someone that I can consider a friend.
But...I...um...I don't understand what it is or why it happened,
but I have memories of when I was really little. Every now and
then, something triggers a memory and I remember some really bad
stuff. It's more scary then anything else. I know I am safe but the
fear and vibrancy of these is startling. I think my younger self
repressed them until I could deal with them." Pausing, she
reflected on how that sounded and winced. Sighing, but no longer as
upset, she added, "That sounded better in my head. Now that it's
out there, it sounds more like I have serious problems. Maybe I do.
I'm not sure. But I think I'm normal. Or at least not crazy or
dangerous. I'm sorry if I worried you or are making you concerned."
