"Good. Let's go." Jack said, walking down the hallway, flames flickering in his hands. He glanced at the path headed downwards once they reached the intersection and then continued past it. He was sure that they'd be exploring down there shortly enough. They may as well explore the entirety of the surface before they began their descent deeper into the abandoned base.

"It occurs to me that if Cortana isn't here, she may well have already retrieved what she had come for and left." Jack said, making the statement sound more like a question.

"It's entirely possible. In that case, I will use the energy signature of the artefact to track her down. Unfortunately, Copper's chassis can be extremely hard to track down. They don't usually leave much magical or electronic signatures, and the portals are hard to trace." Sliuril elaborated, striding down the hallway. This one seemed to be the bunkers - rows and rows of doors filled either side of the hallway.

"Ah. Well, I suppose that makes sense." Jack replied, looking around at the doors. "Surely Copper of all people would know of any weaknesses?" He asked, glancing at the Mech while casually opening up one of the doors to peer at the space within.

Copper shrugged. "I proofed it against anything I could think of. The only weakness I know of is that it's somewhat vulnerable to hacking, but only while connected to the Internet at large." She replied.

There was nothing I'm the to to suggest that anything was amiss. The bunk beds had been made perfectly. A set of off-duty uniforms laid folded at the end of each. There was an unread letter on on one of the pillows. It was almost disturbing in its banality, compared to the commander's office.

Jack nodded thoughtfully as Copper replied, letting himself into the room. He gave it one sweeping look, used a quick spell to pull the letter to himself and then walked out.

"How many people would you say would have been posted at a base like this?" He asked idly, glancing down at the name on the letter and then at the other doors in the passageway.

"Judging from the size? I would say up to thirty could have been stationed here." Copper answered.

"No idea." Sliuril admitted. She'd never had a head for warfare, and this, too, wasn't something she entirely understood. Warfare had always been the others' specialty, and yet she'd always won battles against the majority of them.

The walked to the end of the hallway, and found nothing out of the ordinary. Sliuril cast a quick detection spell, just to be sure that they hadn't missed anything. They hadn't.

"Middle one now." Sliuril muttered, mostly to herself.

Jack nodded, looking around one last time before walking back down the hallway. "And there's an identical base across the canyon. Maybe the weren't both fully staffed, but that's probably between, say, forty to fifty men. Maybe sixty, who knows?"

They reached the intersection and Jack looked down the middle path with a sigh. "If our friend down in the office... wait no, forgive me, in Faith's stomach is any indication, I don't think we'll have to worry about any interference from them."

He stood silently for a few moments. Then, shaking his head, he began following the path down.

The Didact had slumped against the wall and had closed his eyes, waiting for the others. Beowulf was monitoring the canyon and the AI seemed fond enough of the group down there. He'd alert him. The Forerunner idly played with the idea of sending down a Knight which he could control remotely, but decided against it. Whatever the others were doing could be of a delicate nature and they may not appreciate the interruption. Especially, he thought grimly, seeing as they were technically gods. He shook his head at the idea. It'd take a bit of getting used to.

"If we do, I could eat them. I'm still hungry." Faith offered. "Mortals are nutritious."

"Sliuril, I thought you were weaning her off of sentient flesh?" Copper hissed.

"I failed." Sliuril deadpanned.

They began descending into the tunnel's depths, Sliuril pausing briefly when she realized that this wasn't a usual part of Order base structure. It didn't matter - nothing about these two bases, or even the box canyon, had been ordinary. The path was a long one. They walked for perhaps half an hour, until smooth metal had given way to coarse stone. There was an air of disuse in the tunnel, and a layer of dust over the ground.

And a set of footsteps in the dust, which told them to keep on walking.

Until they reached a door. It was, at first glance, a vault door.

Glaurug scanned it.

"It's nearly a foot wide. I don't think Cortana breached it. Also, there was heavy wards on this, and they're still intact. I want to tell you it's the Two's spellcasting, but I'm pretty sure my sensors are malfunctioning."

"Can we force it?" Jack asked, slipping into the Sight to look at the door better. In the dark, gloomy and misty world around him, the vault door shone like a beacon. There was, indeed, a heavy aura of power on it.

Returning to using his normal sense, he looked down at the footprints. "And what about these? Order boots or what?"

"Probably." Sliuril answered, giving the door a hard tap. The wards reacted to her presence, but not enough to deter her. "It doesn't seem enough to stop one of us."

"Those are the boots on my chassis, the one the best stole." Copper muttered. "I'm guessing there something she wanted behind the Vault."

"There's no one but us in the area." Glaurug said after double-checking his scanners.

"I can't pick up any trace of the chassis, either. She must have scented us and ran away." Faith muttered. "It doesn't seem to be a trap."

Sliuril reached out with her magic. There was the same thick material around the entire vault, spelled and warded. The locking mechanisms could not be tampered with through spell work. "Let's force it."

Jack nodded. "Everyone move back, I guess." He shrugged. With that, he retreated down the hallway and began charging up a vortex spell. So, there was something inside the vault, something Cortana had wanted. He was somewhat wary of opening the vault without knowing what was inside. The wards could be masking something quite dangerous for all he knew. But, the fact was, nothing would ever get done if they kept second-guessing themselves.

They cleared the hallway leading towards the Vault, Faith and Copper charging up their own penetration spells. Sliuril, on the other hand, began unraveling the wards. She wasn't too worried about their ill effects - a cursory glance revealed nothing more than a protection charm, although one of more sturdy caliber than regular spells. It was designed to keep lesser beings out, not gods. Faith was the first to release her spell, a double shot of shadowy bolts. Copper followed up with her own magic missile. Between the two of them the spell had been all but entirely destroyed - all that remained was the physical steel, and some remnants of power. Jack's void spell would punch through without problem.

Jack fired off his spell. With a resounding crash, it ripped through the steel. The dust that had settled in the hallway jumped into the air, all but obscuring his vision. He coughed once and patiently waited for it to clear, already charging up a second spell in case the door needed more persuasion... or if there was something inside that wasn't too friendly.

"Energy spikes." Beowulf said. "Inside the base."

Didact sat up. "Do we recognise the signitures?" He asked. The AI nodded it's avatar's head in affirmative. "Your friends are getting busy down there. Nothing else on sensors though."

Didact hesitated and then decided that if they needed him, they'd contact him.

Sliuril blew away the dust behind them with a summoned gust of wind, impatiently stepping into the vault. Faith lumbered in behind her, temporarily plugging the door with her size. It didn't take long for the dragon to realize jut how small the vault was, and she shrunk down. Copper and Glaurug followed, entering the vault.

There, on a raised altar, was a bowl of silvery-gold liquid. It swirled endlessly like a spell in the making, Beneath the murky surface she could spy a single gemstone. Even in the bright liquid it seemed to sparkle with a hundred shades of blue, glittering with stars from within.

The vault that had previously protected the Key had restrained its magic, and now that those wards were gone Sliuril could feel how magically potent the gemstone was. It shone like a sun on her sensors, and she had no doubt that Didact would be able to sense it.

Jack looked around Sliuril and Faith, electing not to step into the small space. "And what exactly would that be?" He asked, looking at the bowl.

"Okay, that's it." Didact said as a new energy signature appeared suddenly. "Take us down. I'm going in after them."

The AI wordlessly began the ship's descent.

"Oh, just the Key." Sliuril said with a languid shrug. "It makes me question what Cortana is trying to do, given that this is relatively useless-"

"Relatively useless? Sliuril, I admire your tendency to understate things, but the Key is the single most important artifact in this world. It's what we've been fighting each other for, and that AI simply comes knowing what's inside. I don't know about you, but I believe this is more than enough reason to call in the Godsphere."

Sliuril shook her head. "You know what that liquid is, sister. Even if Cortana knew what it was, she would be unable to use it."

"But Draugnur would."

"I wouldn't mind if he did." Sliuril muttered.

"Hey, uh, an explanation would be nice?" Glaurug asked, "Because I don't know what you two are yammering about right now."

"For once, I'm right there with you, Glaurug. I don't have the slightest clue what they're talking about." Jack said, looking questioningly from Sliuril to Copper.

The Cryptum landed silently and the Didact ran off, doing a quick sweep while aiming down the sights of his gun. Once he was sure that there was nothing to be seen, he headed inside the base.

"Our world can be controlled through an object known as the Throne." Sliuril explained. "Those who possess the Key are the only ones capable of utilizing it's full powers. With both Artefacts, one would gain access to unlimited powers. The two grant omnipotence, omnipresence - it turns you into the master of this universe. My parents set up this world as our final challenge, so we could fight each other and eventually have a single winner to claim the Key and Throne. I never thought they would keep it here, though the protection of the liquid-spell is probably more than enough."

Faith exited the vault, walking towards the front of the base. She'd felt someone enter just now. To no surprise, it was Didact.

"Ah." Jack nodded. "I see." He stared silently at the Key for a moment. "Well, I certainly wouldn't have expected it to be kept in a box canyon in the middle of nowhere, regardless of the protection the spell provides. I don't suppose it can be moved?" he asked.

Didact nodded to Faith. "Is everything okay down there? There were a lot of energy flares going up."

"Yes. We just broke into something." Faith answered, moving aside so that she wasn't blocking the hallway. It by no means made an easy fit - she was still pretty big. "Would you like to see?"

"Oh, I suppose I could move it, if we absolutely had to." Sliuril replied, briefly touching the smooth liquid. It yielded like water at her touch. When Glaurug tried, however, the surface remained completely unmoving, as unyielding as the strongest barrier.

"I, uh, don't think anyone short of the King would have been able to so much as push in." Glaurug muttered. "You could try. I'd wager it'd be fun to see."
