"Could you please find Mr. Pocket, near Cherrygrove City, and ask him for the Egg that he told me about? I want to learn more about it. It'll be a good opportunity to get to know your Pokémon, as well!" he said. "Oh! RIGHT! Your Pokémon!" He gestured towards the table. "The PokéBall with the sapphire top contains Odark, the Bubbly Pokémon; the one with the ruby top contains Pyrisk, the Bursting Pokémon, while the one with the emerald top contains Pleureaf, the Leafy Pokémon. You may each pick one."
Yuki darted towards Odark's PokéBall, and picked it up, tossing it into the air to send out the Pokémon that would be his partner. "Hi, little guy!" Odark growled. "Uh... Sorry... Big guy?" The tiny Odark was happier with this. "You're going to be my partner from now on!"

Chloe let the Pyrisk out on the table and initiated a staring contest with it. she than petted its little neck bump thing and allowed it to slither onto her messenger bag, where it balanced on the rather full bag.

"Odark, would you like a name, or would you like to remain known as Odark?" Odark flailed a bit, which didn't answer the question. Yuki wasn't sure how to respond to this. "Um... I'll try it as a yes or no question: would you like a name?" Odark nodded. Yuki had no idea what to name the Pokémon, so he promised to name his Starter later.

"Thank you so much, Professor Guernsey!" Yuki exclaimed before running out the door alongside Odark. He turned around to wait for Chloe and Pyre to arrive.

Alongside Chloe and Odark, Yuki walked towards Cherrygrove City. Suddenly, he spotted a mantis Pokémon. "It's that Bug/Fairy-type that I read about! It's called Nymanti, right?" he asked Chloe.

"Do you mind if I catch it, or do you want to?" Yuki asked. "I wish I had a PokéDex to scan its gender... Alas, I can't find out which Pokémon it will evolve into." Nymanti evolved into Solantis if it was male, or Lunymph if female; the problem with not knowing its gender was that it evolved in a different way depending on which one it was, so one might put a ton of effort into getting it to evolve in the right way, but fail because it was the wrong gender.

Chloe pointed to herself with her thumb, and Pyre hopped off of her bag. with two embers from pyre and a small tackle from the Nymanti Choe threw a great ball and managed to catch it. She grinned, hoping for it to be a Lunymph.

Odark tagged along cheerfully. Suddenly, he noticed something. "Dark! O! Odarkdark!"
"What is it?" Yuki asked. Okin appeared to be pawing at some sort of fluff. "Um... Good boy! Do you have any idea at all what that is?"

Yuki decided to put the Brown Fluff in his bag, in case it was somehow important, if not just to make Odark feel useful.
(This is a reference to Amity Square; the Pokémon that follow you have a chance of finding Accessories.)

Yuki began to pet Odark as they walked towards Cherrygrove. He suddenly spotted an Albis. "Look, Chloe! It's a bird Pokémon! I'm going to catch this one," he said. "Go, Odark!" His adorable partner jumped forward. "Use Bubble!" Yuki commanded.
Odark's mane began to fizz (for lack of a better word), and several bubbles shot out of it. The Albis jumped back when the move made contact, and tried to use Recover. However, Yuki threw a PokéBall before it managed to heal completely, and the Snow Pokémon was caught!
